    Description

Since two years we live in an old farm house in a little Czech village, together with two horses, four sheep, eleven chickens, two ducks and two cats. If you like having animals around, enjoy nature, hiking, rolling hills, silence with the occasional cockcrow or moo of the neighbour’s cows, sitting by the fire on summer evenings, swimming in the cold river, if you like getting your hands dirty, working outside and are ready to rough it a little, enjoy spending time with horses and watching the chicken do their thing, and always wanted to live in a circus wagon…you are welcome to join us for a while.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

You will experience life in a small Czech village, taking care of horses, sheep, chickens. My partner is Czech so you can have first-hand insights into Czech language and culture, he likes brewing beer and making cider and if you are interested there may be an opportunity to join in with that.
You can borrow our bikes to explore the surroundings. There is beautiful hilly countryside around in the border region between Czech republic and Austria. For longer trips it is advantageous to bring a car but the nearest train station is not too far away either by bike or on foot (3 km), and we are happy to take you there or pick you up if we can make it fit with our schedule. In the area there are several castle ruins and restored castles, small breweries, the historical town of Cesky Krumlov is close-by, and also to Prague or Vienna it is not too far for a day trip.
The horses are usually happy to get a scratch of the belly, or go for a walk, or stand together in peace and enjoy the sun, they are not really riding horses due to health issues (although an occasional ride may be possible depending on their mood and condition), but there is a lot you can do with them from the ground, if you are interested I will be happy to teach you what I know and to go for walks with them together.

  • Help

    Help

We are still quite new to this place and so there is a long list of projects, ideas and plans that are waiting for hands to tackle them - help with any of the following will be welcome, according to your preference and skills :)
Everyday tasks include taking care of the animals (mucking out stables and horse paddock, feeding horses and chickens) and we can always use help with making fire wood, cutting grass, household chores or cooking, probably we can find something to do in the garden too. There is an orchard with apples, plums, cherries and pears and help with conserving fruit will be most welcome at times of harvest.
There is always something to do on the house, currently we are making more paths in the horse area, a pond for us and the ducks, and in general working on making it a more beautiful place (and also more functional)…

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

There are two options for accommodation:
    1) You will have my beloved circus trailer for yourself, with a view to the meadows and only the horses as your direct neighbours. Nothing’s better than listening to their munching hay while falling asleep! A wood stove (with your efforts) keeps it warm through the winter, bathroom is in the main house ca 100 m away (emergency toilet in the wagon), in the wagon there is a 1.60 m bed (so up to 2 people who are willing to share a bed), a little ethanol stove for making morning coffees or cooking simple meals, although you are welcome to use our kitchen and share dinners with us too.

We will provide 3 meals a day either to be shared with us (mostly on weekends and some evenings during the week) or to cook/prepare for yourself - we will make sure the fridge is filled

    2) For longer stays, you can have the appartment in the main house with two large rooms plus kitchen and shared bathroom. Double bed plus a sofa bed for sleeping. Also here we heat with wood so a bit of effort is required to keep it cozy in the colder part if the year.
Not suitable for people allergic to cats...

  • What else ...

    What else ...

I am in my early 40s, German/Finnish and have myself stayed in several places as a workaway guest which I enjoyed a lot. Since I have the animals and spend most of my free time working around the house, the property and the animals, I don't get to travel much and so I am happy to meet like-minded people from other places and different backgrounds by inviting them to our place. I am a calm person and enjoy peace and quiet but also sitting together to contemplate life and will be happy to share meals, time with the horses and an occasional trip when time allows. My partner Jirka is Czech, in his early 50s, and lives here with us part-time.
I work full-time away from home 4-5 days a week as a scientist (marine biologist), so during weekdays you will be on your own during the day, on weekends we can tackle some projects together. While we are open for any length of stay, ideally you would arrive on a Friday or Saturday to give us time to show you around and make you familiar with the routines.
