    Description

Hello there! Discover our off-grid private gem in the middle of the jungle, located just 1.8 km from the airport. If you are looking for adventure, this is the place to be. We are a young couple (27 & 28 years) with two Dutch Shepherd dogs and one kitty, who recently moved to an old guesthouse. We are currently renovating it to create a homey Bed & Breakfast. Our place is located in a sunny part of Dominica and close to several tropical beaches, the famous volcanic Red Rocks and some beautiful waterfalls, so there is enough to explore!

As of now, one of our cottages is for rent as B&B, and obviously we expect you to be friendly and courteous towards guests.

What you can expect: Along from the serene jungle surroundings, a pristine natural swimming river runs through our property. Take a swim in the unique crystal clear water. The water is very pure since it comes straight from the mountains with nobody living above. The place is very quiet and close to nature. On clear nights you can see Orion's belt and the stars & moon can be absolutely breathtaking.

Since the property is located in the bush, it is quite remote so be mindful that stores and supermarkets are not around the corner (see accomodation) Ofcourse you are welcome to take a ride with us whenever we leave the property (which usually is around every 4-5 days but might take longer) so you can catch a bus to one of the touristic attractions. Usually we will go to Roseau once every week so we advice you to think ahead and make a shopping list/ buy in bulk since some things might not be available in smaller villages.

Are you ready to have an adventurous stay at this unique natural paradise on the island? Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions, we are more than happy to answer them!

The local community is very friendly and knowledgeable on things like farming, bee keeping, construction work, cooking and having fun ;) Friends of ours have a chocolate factory that you can visit to see how chocolate is made from scratch from local cocoa. We are close to the ocean and we know fishermen that could show you how to spearfish etc. We are both entrepreneurs and can show you how to start and run a business. We have experience in restaurant work, animal care, dog training, and a degree in cultural Anthropology and immersive experiences in tribal life, so we have a lot to share on hunter-gatherer lifestyle. The local tribe on the island, The Kalinago, is also definitely worth visiting. We hope to get to know enthusiastic people that share our love for nature and adventure and make new friends.

Volunteers are expected to help renovate cottages (painting, fixing small things, cleaning), garden (weeding, planting, harvesting, brush cutting, mowing the lawn), assist with cleaning and work on projects like building a chicken coop. Artistic skills to create a wall mural are also appreciated. Hours can be flexible/less, depending on the labor intensiveness of the work. These hours can be flexible, for example if you like to work more hours on one day so you can have the next day off to explore the island. Or if you did a good job on something we wouldn't mind giving you extra days off. We can assist you with most of the work and show you the way, but if you have any specialty knowledge on woodwork, construction, plant/medicine, cooking, producing natural cosmetics, or artistic work, or marketing experience/ social media coverage you are very welcome to stay with us!

The place is very close to the airport (about 10 minutes driving).. It's reachable by car or on foot and sits about 2 km unpaved road away from the main road. The road is safe to hike, but be prepared that the hike from the property to the main road can take like 1 hour in the full sun. From the main road it's possible to take a bus or Hitchhike to tourist destinations. We are happy to guide you to ensure a safe arrival and ofcourse we can tell you where the best spots are to have a great time!
You are welcome to take rides with us whenever we leave the property.
Volunteers will stay in one of the basic cottages/apartments under renovation, with running (hot) water, electricity, two open bedrooms, three beds, and one bathroom, possibly shared with other volunteers.

The kitchen has a kitchenette, utensils, and a water kettle. We have a laundry machine that you can use to wash clothes/ towels. You are welcome to use the WiFi for things like WhatsApp or Social Media. However, because there is no unlimited internet plan available to us we have to limit our data usage and we ask you to be mindful and to not use any streaming services like YouTube, Netflix or Prime or download any large files (like movies). If you like to have more internet access we are happy to assist you in getting a local SIM-card and data plan.
Since our property is a very unique and popular holiday destination that people pay considerable money for to spend time at, we are offering you free stay but we expect you to provide for your own food. You are welcome to join us with grocery shopping once a week, when we go to Roseau where there are more options for you to chose from. You are always welcome to have fruits from the garden (like banana, coconut, starfruit, guava, pomerack, soursop etc.) but this would not be enough to sustain a full diet. We also buy fresh bread every few days at the local bakery and we can get bread for you too. While we can share some meals with you together, generally volunteers are expected to cook most of their own meals or together with other volunteers.

    What else ...

We expect you to treat our place with care, and not to litter or harm the environment. You can leave your trash in trashbags and we can bring them out when we leave. Also, our toilet works with a septic system, which means live bacteria eat away the waste and clean the tank for us, so please do NOT throw anything else than toilet paper and human waste ;) in our toilet. Otherwise this will kill the bacteria and stop the system from working (plus it might clog the toilet and you do not want to clean that up I promise ;). If you need to dispose of any sanitary product or anything else please use the bins! Thank you in advance!
We live in a separate house on the property. Our place is guarded by two trained Shepherds. While they are friendly, if you are uncomfortable with dogs or with allergies you might consider this.

We have limited internet access since we pay per MB and have a maximum MB limit on our plan (if this experis we have to drive 1 hour and wait in line for 1 hour at the internet shop to update the plan, so you can imagine this is a huge hassle), so you are welcome to use simple applications like email or social media, but we ask you not to download any files, use any streaming services, video editors that require data or any other applications that might consume a lot of data. If you like to have more internet access, we can show you where and how to get a local SIM-card and data plan.
