Description
Dear friends,

We are an English language teaching program to children and young people from diverse groups with foreign people who have a fluent level of English. Embrace this opportunity, and we will be delighted to welcome you, ensuring memorable moments shared together!

The Inclusive Multicultural Original Program, proposes an environment of participation and cultural exchange between diverse groups such as: indigenous, mestizos, foreigners and other ethnic groups, with respect, responsibility, trust, cooperation and peaceful coexistence being the values that are practiced day by day within the teaching processes.

General objective

- Promote a process of teaching the English language to boys and girls in the province of Cañar from an intercultural and inclusive approach.

Specific objectives

- Promote a bilingual intercultural education from the exchange and interaction of the educational community during the teaching-learning process.
- Promote the teaching of the English language from an active pedagogy, of encounter, respect and appreciation of differences.
- Promote the tourist development of the canton, province and the country as complementary activities

Convinced that education is the most powerful instrument for the progress of humanity, a path of hope is undertaken, which seeks to reduce the social gaps that have been the product of discrimination and xenophobia in common people. For this reason, cultural exchange from the teaching of the English language is considered important as a significant tool for the new generations, which allows them to address this new cosmopolitan reality.

This program takes place in the Cañar Canton, Cañar is located in the southern region of Ecuador in the Province that bears his name.

Cañar is a small city but with very large tourist attractions, we are characterized by the hospitality and kindness of the people.
Our volunteers will have a daily accompaniment during the time they are in our city, they will know a new lifestyle, they will carry out a cultural exchange with people of different ethnic groups.

They will know our world-renowned tourist places, they will enjoy our exquisite gastronomy, they will feel like family and above all they will live an experience that they will remember for their whole life.

The inclusive multicultural program from Kañari offers its volunteers a unique experience, they will live a different culture, traditions and lifestyle.

They will learn a new language (Spanish), coexist with indigenous children and adults, they will develop in an environment in which they will be surrounded by native Quichua speakers and the children will give them all their love and gratitude for thinking of them.

We are looking for foreign people who have a fluent level of English, who have a vocation to serve and who like to teach the English language to children and young people, from an inclusive and intercultural approach, promoting coexistence among diverse people.

It is not necessary for the volunteer to speak Spanish.

Personnel with availability to settle in Cañar - Ecuador is required in a minimum period of 6 weeks and a maximum 3 months.

Volunteers will host a traditional Cañari host family.
They will have their own room in which they will have the necessary things such as the bed, their nightstand, wardrobe, they will have access without compromise to all the areas of their host house.

In the house we divide the activities in the kitchen, for cleaning the house and the use of the washing machine.
Volunteers have 4 days off per week.
What else ...
If you are an athletic person who enjoys running, walking, cycling, playing football, this is an ideal place for you. We start the day doing sports every day, except on Saturdays because we have classes.
Our volunteers will be able to go on excursions in natural places and in parishes near Cañar. Ecuador is a small country so also the volunteers can visit other cities from the different regions of the country.

In Cañar there are many tourist places where you would love to be, we have public transport available until night.
It will be an enriching experience for the volunteers and for the people who are part of the team.

The program will be very happy to host responsible volunteers who can meet the required length of stay.

First of all: I couldn’t recommend this experience more as a learning experience for aspiring teachers. Also, the experience of being part of the life here, is extremely valuable and I will never forget it!

I had the opportunity to volunteer for two months, and it was an experience that truly enriched my journey. It is an institute that teaches… read more English with volunteers who have a fluent level of English in exchange for accommodation, food and participation in the community. Teaching English to local students was rewarding and allowed me to grow not just as an instructor but as an individual. The students’ energy was a joy to work with, making each lesson fulfilling. I’m grateful for the memories and lessons learned during my stay and wish Paula and Antonio all the best as they continue to inspire and teach their community!

I was very surprised, happy and overwhelmed by my birthday party – which the students and Antonio and Paula had put together. I will never forget this, and the warmth and joy I felt about the surprise, and the love that was given to me.

Among other motivations this place is perfect if you want to learn how to be a teacher or to do an internship as a teacher. The working hours per day are two in class and two for preparing the lessons, five days a week. The students are of a mixed age, according to their level. If you have a big age gap in your class, I advise you to think of some group work and design different activities for the older ones and the younger ones. Often the younger ones have much less experience with English, while the older ones already have heard about the things you are explaining, and it is more about practice and revision for them.

As for the stay – I had my own room, and I was provided with two nourishing and healthy meals per day. Once a day the volunteers will provide the dinner, which is for each person will be about two times a week. On weekends everyone will do their own meals or go out to eat, which is also nice, as you get the chance to try the local gastronomy.

In any case things to bring: warm clothes, something like a heating pillow, a few ideas for recipes for dinner, a card game, the courage to break the ice and initiate activities with people you encounter, some humor to better connect with the students, many ideas for games for students, some ideas about lesson plans and how to structure them.

The readiness to be overwhelmed by the openheartedness, sassiness and love that you will encounter from students if you stay long enough and are a moderately friendly person 😉

In terms of travelling: Me and the other volunteers went to Cuenca on the weekends. If there is a long weekend you can travel to Mancora in Peru, or other places that are further away.

At school, Sam was an excellent teacher. He enjoys spending time with children and always seeks activities that serve them and aid in their learning. Dentro del hogar, Sam siempre tuvo una personalidad muy positiva, y trasmitía muy buena energía. El es el de las personas con las que siempre puedes contar, es un muy buen amigo. Sam demostró ser una persona responsable, siempre cumplió con las tareas asignadas en la casa, el es un buen cocinero, y todas las actividades la realiza de una forma alegre, acompañado de su buena música. Sam es un buen deportista, es muy bueno jugando futbol, basketball, y volleyball, el siempre esta activo y dispuesto a sumarse al grupo en cualquier tipo de actividad.

SUMMARY: I couldn't recommend staying and working with Antonio and Paula enough! My stay in Canar coincided with the state of emergency in Ecuador, but we always felt very safe and reassured. The town even lifted restrictions not long after they had been called as it is deemed no-risk. If you're looking for somewhere safe, fun, rewarding and… read more well-organised - and a unique cultural experience - this will be perfect!

I spent 6 weeks in Canar, and I really enjoyed every aspect of it. Initially I thought six weeks would be too long for me, but in the end I did not want to leave. First and foremost, Antonio and Paula are both really genuinely wonderful people, and they form the basis of the whole programme. They are super welcoming, and made me feel at home immediately in their house. They are also really genuinely passionate and knowledgeable about the work they are doing here, and you can see how this passion and knowledge makes the school what it is. It is also very infectious: meeting them and talking about the project really gives you a sense of purpose, and a desire to do your best for the students and the community. It is also excellent for learning Spanish: there is always somebody who speaks English and Spanish on hand to help, and of course Antonio and Paula are great teachers!

The work is good in the sense that you can get out what you put in: they have lesson plans already and will give you as much help as you need, but there is also a lot of space to be creative and teach in the way that you see best. Antonio and Paula are also very receptive to new ideas, and show genuine interest in and support for whatever the other volunteers and I planned to do. It is worth mentioning too that this was by far the best organised school I have worked in in Latin America, and this again is a credit to Antonio and Paula. The workload is also very manageable, with plenty of time to plan lessons without getting in the way of exploring Canar and Cuenca, the nearest big city.

In terms of the living arrangement, it is the most comfortable I have been so far in my travels. The house is very clean and everything is well organised, and you get your own room! We have meals together, talking, laughing and sharing cultures, and occasionally we would have parties where we can have a drink and dance together (I learned lots of great new dances from Palestine, Greece and Scotland as well as the Ecuadorean ones!). We also play lots of sport, including volleyball, basketball and football. The sport was a real highlight of this experience for bonding with the other volunteers!

Canar is a quiet and beautiful town with a big indigenous community. Staying here gives you access to a unique cultural experience: there are hardly any tourists around and there is lots to learn and experience. The locals are really friendly and proud of their town, they often stopped me in the street to ask where I'm from and give me recommendations! The students are fantastic as well, really eager to learn and fun to talk to. It broke my heart to say goodbye to them in particular.

The nearest town, Cuenca, is less than two hours away, and many of the volunteers and I would go every weekend. It's a really cool city to visit, very safe and with great food and architecture. Its really nice to be staying in Canar, but having the option of visiting a lively city when you want a bit more city life to counterpoint the tranquil countryside.

This is a really unique and rewarding opportunity and I couldn't recommend it enough. I can't possibly do justice to the experience I had the privilege of having here in a few paragraphs!

During the time Tala and Damaris spent with us, our home also hosted Jannis from Germany, Megan from Scotland, and Sam from the United Kingdom. Despite being from different countries, we all lived together in the house, and there was always respect, affection, and support among us. We became a family. Tala and Damaris were incredibly kind and fulfilled all the tasks assigned to them in the house. They were always willing to participate in other activities such as sports, hikes, dancing, and movie nights. They kept their room and the house very clean. Additionally, they prepared delicious Greek and Palestinian dishes during their kitchen shifts. Thank you for sharing and teaching us about your culture; we love you both.
At the school, Tala and Damaris were the most experienced teachers we've had so far, and it showed from the very beginning. Their lesson planning was excellent, keeping the students engaged and making classes fun, which is why their students rarely missed a class. We learned so much from you, friends, and we will share all the materials you created with future teachers who come to the place. Your students learned a great deal and will always remember you. You are incredible teachers; thank you for everything, dear friends.
I am confident that we will meet again someday, although I don't know when or where. Know that the doors of our home will always be open to you and your family. Take care of yourselves; we miss you.

Ustedes son un ejemplo de que existen personas muy buenas en este mundo, su forma de ser, su energía, su amabilidad, generosidad y la relación que ustedes mantienen es muy bonita. Lamentablemente tienen que seguir con su caminar, pero nosotros hubiésemos querido que se queden por mucho más tiempo. Les extrañamos mucho.
Durante el periodo que Tala y Damaris estuvieron con nosotros, en la casa también se encontraban Jannis de Alemania, Megan de Escocia y Sam del Reino Unido, fuimos muchas personas de diferentes países las que vivimos en la casa, sin embargo siempre existió respeto, cariño y apoyo entre todos nosotros, fuimos una familia. Tala y Damaris son muy amables y cumplieron con todas las tareas que les asignamos en la casa, además siempre existió predisposición de parte de ellas para realizar otras actividades como deportes, caminatas, bailes y películas. Ellas son muy aseadas y mantuvieron su cuarto y la casa muy limpia. Además, ellas prepararon en sus turnos de cocina, comida deliciosa de Grecia y Palestina, gracias por compartir y enseñarnos de su cultura, les queremos muchísimo.
En la escuela, hasta el momento han sido las personas que mas experiencia han tenido enseñando, y eso se demostró desde el primer momento. La planificación que ellas realizaban era muy buena, les tenían todo el tiempo ocupado a los estudiantes, y las clases fueron muy divertidas por tal razón casi nunca faltaban sus estudiantes. Aprendimos mucho de ustedes amigas, y ahora todo el material que crearon vamos a compartir con los futuros profesores que vendrán a , sus estudiantes aprendieron muchísimo y siempre siempre les recordaran, son unas profesoras increíbles, gracias por tanto queridas amigas.
Tengo la convicción de que algún día nos volveremos a ver, no se en donde ni cuando pero se que lo haremos, las puertas de nuestra casa siempre estarán abiertas para ustedes y su familia, cuídense muchísimo, les extrañamos un montón.

Wow! We reaaaally recommend this project to anyone who has genuine interest in working with children and young adults, and is seeking for a great cultural experience in a very comfortable family-like environment!! We stayed for 6 weeks (which passed super quickly) and we would definitely have stayed longer if we hadn't got flights for our next… read more destination.. (we recommend you to stay longer!) Antonio and Paula made us feel like home from the first instance, they are super easy going and fun!! Their doggies Patacon and Millcocha are surely going to uplift your experience!

The project itself was very organised, we all taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 2 hours and Saturdays for almost 4 hours. We also had a conversation class for 1hr30 mins on Wednesday. In the mornings we made our lesson plans and prepared the resources for our teaching. In reality, the lesson plans are already made by previous volunteers, but if you enjoy teaching like we did, you have all the freedom to adjust them or make your own! For us, preparing our teaching was a very fun and enriching experience; especially when we saw the students’ excitement from the games we had planned and their progress!! The project has been going so well that they recently won a US scholarship (BRAVOOO) and Antonio and Paula wish to make their language school a bilingual school and help send their students for cultural exchanges abroad. We are so happy to have contributed a bit to their vision! Also, the students are so lovely and they show real interest in learning! The more excited you are and the funniest the activities are, the easier it is to gain their trust and their attention. Be ready to receive a lot of love!
After class, we had quite a lot of free time so very often we went to play volleyball, basketball, or soccer all together, which was waaay more fun than we thought, especially when Antonio's family or other locals joined as well!

Outside of teaching, Canar is a cute little town with super friendly people! There you won't find many tourists so this is the ultimate cultural experience. Many festivities are going on and be sure you will be part of them! At home, all volunteers had their own bedrooms and each one cooked dinner once a week, which was super nice because we tried food from many parts of the world. After dinner we would all enjoy a cup of tea together, chatting, watching films, playing cards etc! On the weekends we went to Cuenca (less than 2 hrs away) with the rest of the volunteers as we find the city beautiful and with loads to do, but if you want to visit other places, the long weekends you will have free are going to be very convenient!

In conclusion, we are VERY grateful to have chosen this project. It's the workaway we felt the most comfortable and where we made the greatest friends on our trip so far. Paula, Antonio, Megan, Sam, and Jannis, thank you for this amazing experience. We will never forget our last party, the world dances that we tried, the canelazo, and all the emotional conversations! :))) We are sure we will keep in touch and will try to meet again! They trusted him from the very beginning, and thanks to that, the learning process was more enjoyable for them. Henry is very responsible and plans everything meticulously, even on an individual basis for each student. His personality allows students to trust him and feel confident in practicing English. Henry's main activity was developing the program's website, and he did it excellently. He understood our mission, vision, and our needs, conducted interviews, created videos, researched, and the result is truly professional. Thank you very much, dear friend.
Inside the house, he was very generous, friendly, helpful, and tidy. He integrated very well with each one of us and engaged in activities that he didn't even do in his home country. Thank you for playing volleyball with us, walking, playing soccer, dancing to our music, and appreciating our culture. You are no longer just a volunteer; you are part of our family. Henry paso dos meses con nosotros, sin embargo la forma de como pudo conectarse con los estudiantes fue algo impresionante, ellos confiaron en el desde el primer momento, y gracias a eso el proceso de aprendizaje fue mas divertido para ellos. Henry es muy responsable y planifica absolutamente todo, e incluso de manera individual para cada estudiante, su forma de ser permite que los estudiantes confíen en el y se sienten con confianza para practicar inglés. OMG, where do I even begin? If you're reading this and wondering whether to join this Workaway, let me just say: jump into it RIGHT NOW. It's unbelievable how, in just two months, I've grown so close to the Organization's mission and the wonderful family of Antonio and Paula.

Originally, my goal in joining this Workaway was to enhance my branding… read more skills by developing their website. But, oh, it turned out to be so much more than that. I had the amazing opportunity to work as an assistant teacher alongside Stella, a truly inspiring educator, in their Tuesday and Thursday classes. On Wednesdays, I participated in the Conversation Club, helping kids practice their English speaking skills, and on Saturdays, I immersed myself in the full-day class.

The joy of teaching these bright, hardworking kids from Ecuador is indescribable. They just need that chance, and being a part of giving them that is incredibly rewarding. You're not just teaching a language; you're opening up a world of opportunities for them.

What's truly unique about the place is its approach to education. Forget about conventional, textbook-heavy English classes. Here, it's all about interactive learning. As a volunteer, you get to design lesson plans, encouraging you to unleash your creativity and engage students of different ages in various ways. I'll never forget the fun we had during a game of Spectrum with the older students, sparking lively debates and fresh perspectives.

Antonio, Paula, and the other volunteers are always there to support you with ideas and games, fostering a collaborative and innovative teaching environment. The mission of the organization is not just inspiring; it's transformative. They're on a quest to build the first bilingual school in Canar, shaping these kids into global citizens.

The other volunteers, Jack, Genie, Jannis, and Stella, have become like family. We shared unforgettable hikes, trips, and activities. Jack's vegetarian cooking opened my eyes to new flavors and philosophies. Genie, the heart of our group, kept us connected and engaged. Jannis, the coolest and most laid-back of us all, introduced us to the local culture and social events. And Stella, with her strong, independent mindset, was an exceptional teacher and role model.

In between teaching, there was plenty of time to explore Ecuador. Canar's convenient location makes it easy to travel, but often, I found myself just wanting to immerse myself in the local culture right there. From playing volleyball to attending family events with Antonio and Paula, every moment was filled with genuine warmth and cultural richness. Whether it was hiking with Antonio's dad or playing chess with Antonio himself, every day was an adventure. And let's not forget the fitness aspect – you're definitely going to get active here!

To Antonio and Paula: you are the soul of the organization. Your leadership, creativity, and hard work are the driving forces behind this incredible experience. Your vision and dedication have not only touched my life but also the lives of countless others. I can't recommend this Workaway experience enough. I'll miss everyone – the volunteers, the kids, the families, Antonio, and Paula. Thank you all for making this journey so memorable and joyous

Paula and Antonio are… read more amazing people, I think I have never met someone so generous, with such pure and good hearts, I sincerely consider them family. I really admire them a lot because with humility and with apparent simplicity they are building something unique, which is growing day by day and attracting more people, from all over the world. The project is fantastic: during my stay I was in charge of developing the books and then teaching. One thing I really liked and for which I am very grateful is that I was given a lot of trust, Paula and Antonio believed in me from the beginning, but at the same time they always supported, guided and suggested me. I had no experience in teaching, however, thanks to Paula and Antonio I was able to learn a lot and live this experience that enriched me and made me grow. It was my responsibility to plan my lessons, write exams and later correct them. I recommend this volunteering to autonomous, responsible and creative people.
I remember before I went, I had asked Antonio by video call if it was also a culturally stimulating experience, I did not know what it was like to be in a small town in the mountains, if I could have a cultural exchange. My answer now is ABSOLUTELY YES. I think nowhere else have I learned as much about the culture, the people, the traditions, the ways of life, and the country in general as here in Cañar. Paula and Antonio always involved me in all activities even outside of the school. They even let me into their families. Together we went to celebrations (for example, to Inti Raymi, the indigenous sun festival, or to celebrate Carnival, another unforgettable experience), we went to soccer games, to birthdays, to visit indigenous friends in the field. In short, thanks to them, the opportunities for an authentic and profound cultural experience are countless.
In addition, on my days off I also visited other places on my own or with other volunteers. Cañar is very conveniently located; it is close to many other places of interest and allows you to travel and get to know quite a lot. During my volunteering, I have been to Cuenca, Ingapirca, Baños, Latacunga, Guayaquil, Playas, and Puerto Lopez.
Don't think twice; go and be part. If you can stay for the entire 13-15 week semester, that would be ideal, the children will really appreciate it and also this will allow them to have more continuity and stability. It will be an unforgettable experience for you, I promise you will not be bored, every day there will be something new, something that you too can learn and enjoy.

It was almost 5 months that you shared with us and to think that at the beginning you were only going to stay for a month, thank you for that decision you made to stay with us longer.
Clara taught Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 to 5:00 pm to children and young people from 10 to 15 years of age, and on Saturdays from 08:30 to 12:30 to children and young people from 9 to 17 years old. As a teacher she was very responsible, creative and friendly with our students, she was always looking for strategies or activities that would help her improve her level of English, and the joy you felt when your students learned was incredible. All your students miss you very much, thank you for sowing hope in each one of them.
In our family, you leave us a very, very big void, we will never forget you and the doors of our house will always be open for when you want to return, thank you for making us happy with your crazy things, dances and spontaneous things that arose, but always characterizing you for your transparency, honesty and good vibes. Existen etapas en la vida que son muy complicadas, momentos en los que estas a punto de rendirte o te cuesta levantarte, tu llegaste en ese periodo de nuestras vidas y nos diste la fuerza, alegría y motivación para seguir adelante, por esta razón tu eres una bendición muy grande que llego a nuestro programa y más que todo a nuestra familia.
Se podría decir que nuestro programa tiene un antes y después, luego de tu llegada, los cambios han sido significativos y evidentes. Tu nos ayudaste a desarrollar los libros que ahora son usados en todos los niveles de nuestra escuela. Te involucraste en todas las actividades de nuestro programa como si fueran propias y siempre lo hacías con mucha alegría y dedicación. Fueron casi 5 meses los que compartiste con nosotros y pensar que en un inicio únicamente ibas a estar un mes, gracias por esa decisión que tomaste de quedarte más tiempo con nosotros.
Clara enseñó los días martes y jueves de 3 a 5pm a niños y jóvenes de 10 a 15 años de edad, y los días sábados de 08h30 a 12h30 a niños y jóvenes de 9 a 17 años. Como docente ella fue muy responsable, creativa y amigable con nuestros estudiantes, siempre buscaba estrategias o actividades que le ayuden a mejorar su nivel de inglés, y la alegría que sentías cuando tus estudiantes aprendían fue algo increíble. Todos tus estudiantes te extrañan muchísimo, gracias por sembrar esperanza en cada uno de ellos.

Lo he dicho ya en algunas ocasiones, pero creo que es necesario repetirlo, fuimos muy bendecidos cuando ustedes decidieron unirse a nuestro programa, son unas personas maravillosas con un corazón muy bueno, les extrañamos mucho queridos amigos.
Grace y Osh es una pareja joven, su relación es muy buena, tanto es así que ni un solo momento durante los casi tres meses que pasaron con nosotros tuvieron discusiones o inconvenientes, el amor, cariño, respeto que se tienen es muy bonito. El tener este tipo de relación les permite ayudar y servir a otras personas como ocurrió en nuestro programa, ellos enseñaron a niños de 6 a 8 años y a jóvenes de hasta 17 años, los días martes y jueves de 3 a 5pm, y los días sábados de 08h30 a 12h30, ellos fueron muy responsables y cada una de sus clases las planificaron de la mejor manera, además siempre sonreían y eran muy carismáticos con los estudiantes, tuvimos mucha suerte al contar con su apoyo amigos, gracias por tooodo.
En nuestra casa, tuvimos una relación muy buena con Grace y Osh, a pesar de que vivimos 7 personas de diferentes culturas, siempre hubo respeto y apoyo entre cada uno de nosotros, sin duda alguna que fuimos y somos una familia. Ellos cocinaban muy rico, eran muy considerados en todo, incluso en pequeños detalles, además compartieron momentos de deporte, baile, actividades del programa y familiares con nosotros, les queremos mucho amigos.

Elisa, es de las personas que se necesita para hacer de esta vida, un mundo mejor.

En la escuela, podríamos decir que fue una de los mejores profesores que hemos tenido en nuestro programa, a pesar que ella no tuvo experiencia enseñando, pudo adaptarse fácilmente y enseñar a los niños con cariño y mucha responsabilidad. During her 6-week stay, she demonstrated responsibility, respect, and charisma in each of the class days. On Tuesdays and Thursdays she taught children and young people from the first level, they were from 9 to 14 years old, and on Saturdays she taught young people from 12 to 15 years old who were from the third level. Noa is very talented, she plays the guitar, sings and plays soccer very well, these skills she often put into practice when teaching.
Inside the home, Noa complied with the cooking and cleaning hours of the house, Noa always infected us with her good energy and she created a very nice environment when she did different activities with us.

Gracias por formar parte de nuestro programa y familia, eres una mujer valiente y aventurera con un gran corazón. Te extrañamos mucho.
Noa llego a nuestro programa el 30 de diciembre del 2022 y se adaptó muy muy rápido a nuestras costumbres y festividades que se realizaron en estas fechas especiales, sabíamos que experiencias muy bonitas se venían y a la vez el decirle adiós fue muy complicado.
Durante su permanecía de 6 semanas, ella demostró responsabilidad, respeto y carisma en cada una de las jornadas de clase. Los días martes y jueves enseño a los niños y jóvenes del primer nivel, ellos tenían de 9 a 14 años de edad, y los días sábados enseño a jóvenes de 12 a 15 años que fueron del tercer nivel. Noa es muy talentosa, ella toca la guitarra, canta y juega muy bien futbol, estas habilidades frecuentemente puso en práctica a la hora de enseñar.
Dentro del hogar, Noa cumplió con los horarios de cocina y limpieza de la casa, siempre Noa nos contagió con su buena energía y genero un ambiente muy lindo cuando realizaba diferentes actividades con nosotros.
Amiga Noa, que dios guie tu caminar y nos permita volvernos a encontrar en algún lugar, eres una muy buena persona que hace de este mundo un lugar mejor.

However, at her young age she had to migrate with her family to Belgium, a country where she was able to study and develop her full potential, thus becoming a great architect and fluent in 4 languages: Dutch, English, Spanish and French. We have considered making this short introduction of Meli, because this reality was the motivation for her to volunteer here, in this way she made all her potential and time available, teaching English to children from 6 to 8 years old on Tuesdays and Thursdays. , and to young people from 12 to 15 years old on Saturdays during the period April - June of this year.
Meli had empathy, patience and dedication to teaching the children, she is outgoing which allowed her students to have more confidence when speaking English, the good relationship with her students was fundamental in the process of teaching the foreign language. It is important to indicate that in addition to responsibly fulfilling all the tasks entrusted to her as a teacher, she also participated in other events such as workshops, parades and also social events that the program commonly has. Meli knows how to have fun hahah.
Unfortunately, we were not able to host Meli, because during this time of volunteering she lived with her relatives in El Tambo canton. But if she ever thinks of volunteering in your program, don't think about it for a second and enjoy her company, she is wonderful.

Eres un claro ejemplo de responsabilidad, humildad, amabilidad y sobre todo buena vibra. El aporte de tus conocimientos y la predisposición para participar en diferentes eventos ha sido algo que te ha caracterizado mientras fuiste voluntaria en nuestro programa.
Meli es oriunda del cantón El Tambo – Ecuador, cantón que se encuentra ubicado a 10 minutos de Cañar en donde se desarrolla el programa de enseñanza del idioma inglés. Sin embargo, a su corta edad tuvo que migrar conjuntamente con su familia a Bélgica, país en donde pudo estudiar y desarrollar todo su potencial, convirtiéndose así en una gran arquitecta y hablando de manera fluida 4 idiomas, holandés, inglés, español y francés. Hemos considerado realizar esta pequeña introducción de Meli, debido a que esta realidad fue la motivación para que sea voluntaria, de esta manera puso a disposición todo su potencial y tiempo, enseñando ingles a niños de 6 a 8 años los días martes y jueves, y a jóvenes de 12 a 15 años los días sábados durante el periodo abril – junio del presente año.
Meli tuvo empatía, paciencia y dedicación para enseñar a los niños, ella es extrovertida lo que permitió a sus estudiantes tener más confianza a la hora de hablar inglés, la buena relación con sus estudiantes fue fundamental en el proceso de enseñanza del idioma extranjero. Es importante indicar, que además de cumplir responsablemente con todas las tareas encomendadas como docente, también participo de otros eventos como talleres, desfiles y también eventos sociales que comúnmente tiene el programa. Meli sí que sabe cómo divertirse hahah.
Desafortunadamente nosotros no pudimos hospedarle a Meli, debido a que durante este tiempo de voluntariado ella vivió con sus familiares en el cantón El Tambo. Pero sin alguna vez ella piensa realizar un voluntariado en tu programa, no lo pienses ni un segundo y disfruta de su compañía, ella es maravillosa.

Canar, Ecuador and this place gave me everything I could have hoped for in a Workaway experience. Paula and Antonio went above and beyond to make my time with them better than I ever could have imagined.

I spent 3 months in Canar, Ecuador teaching one semester of English classes. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I taught a group of 5-8 year olds for… read more two hours each time. Every Saturday, I taught a 4 hour class for 9-15 year olds. I worked with a native Spanish speaker and translator so the language barrier while teaching was not difficult at all. During my free time in Canar, I planned out my classes, went on runs/walks with the dogs, had meals with Paula, Antonio, and their families, and did various other things. On weekends, my Ecuadorian family encouraged me to explore their country. The bus system in Ecuador is super accessible and cheap. I was able to travel to the Amazon Rainforest, Quilotoa Lake, Banos, and other places by bus.

I ended up being the only workawayer in the house for this session, which I was nervous about at first. Luckily, the entire situation actually worked out perfectly because Antonio, Paula, and I ended up speaking almost entirely in Spanish in the house, a great way for me to practice and improve. Additionally, there was an incredible network of support among the other teachers in the program (non-workawayer Americans who live in Cuenca, a city nearby.) Whenever I wanted to go to Cuenca, I always had a place to stay. They too became a part of my family in Ecuador.

Workawayers, if you have the opportunity to live with such a kind, inspiring, welcoming community, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Antonio and Paula were funny, interesting, and patient with me as I improved my Spanish. They truly immersed me in their culture as well as encouraged me to explore the surrounding areas. We had so much fun together with everything from card games and running to sharing music and going out at night.

Antonio and Paula, you welcomed me in like one of your own and I am so grateful for that. You will forever be my Ecuadorian family. Thank you so much for everything. I miss you all and can't wait until the next time I see you and your beautiful family! Por favor, cuando ustedes pueden, vienen a los Estados Unidos para visitar mi casa y mi familia. A pesar de su corta edad (18 años), Shea ha demostrado ser una persona muy madura, decidida y fuerte. Su personalidad tan relajada le permite afrontar las adversidades de la vida de la mejor manera.
Dentro de nuestro programa Shea enseño inglés a niños de diferentes edades desde los 6 hasta los 17 años, la dedicación y el compromiso que mantuvo en sus clases se pudo evidenciar en los resultados significativos que sus estudiantes alcanzaron. Gracias por tu responsabilidad, puntualidad, carisma y vocación de servicio a los demás. Gracias por sembrar esperanza en la niñez y juventud del canton Cañar. Es importante mencionar también que Shea pensando en el bienestar del programa ha generado contactos con diferentes instituciones y personas que nos permite ser mas fuertes como centro de enseñanza del idioma ingles, Gracias por todo querida amiga.
En la casa, Shea es muy amigable, colaboraba en todas las diferentes actividades que realizábamos. A Shea le gustaba compartir con nuestros familiares y se involucro sin ningún problema a nuestro estilo de vida. Tambien Shea es amante a los animales, ella cuidaba de Patacon y Melcocha (nuestras mascotas), también se caracteriza por ser una persona atlética, usualmente ella hacia ejercicio todos los días en la mañana. Si es que tienes la oportunidad de hospedar a Shea no lo dudes, es una bendición con la que puedes compartir muchos momentos agradables.

Without a doubt, you are a very creative person, with all the projects, conversations, and games you did with the children. Thank you for being patient with them and for teaching them in a different and fun way. You have a youthful spirit, which I hope you never change. Thank you for sharing and playing with the students even during breaks, thank you very much for planting hope in their hearts. Although you had no experience as a teacher, you showed us that with sacrifice and effort you can achieve great things. YOU WERE A WONDERFUL TEACHER!
Inside our home, you leave us with a very big void in our hearts. You are one of the most humble people we have had the joy of knowing. Thank you for valuing every detail and never wasting food. Thank you for supporting us in everything that was within your reach. You are multifaceted, you worked as a cook, carpenter, mechanic, veterinarian, translator, and counselor. You are super neat and clean. The passion you have for sports and outdoor activities is also to be admired. It is a great motivation to maintain healthy habits.
I think it goes without saying that the doors of the house will always be open for you because you are a part of our family. We will miss you very much, thank you for everything you have done for us.

Lamentablemente tu estadía llego a su fin, estamos agradecidos con Dios y la vida por haber tenido la oportunidad de compartir bellos momentos contigo. Llegaste como parte del programa, pero ahora eres parte de nuestra familia.
Fueron casi 4 meses el tiempo que compartiste con nosotros.
Como docente, demostraste responsabilidad, puntualidad, carisma, compromiso y entrega. La forma como trataste a tus estudiantes dice mucho de ti como persona, de seguro ellos te van a extrañar. Gracias por la planificación que realizaste en cada una de las jornadas de clase. Sin duda alguna eres una persona muy creativa, gracias por todos los proyectos, dinámicas, conversaciones y juegos que realizaste con los niños. Gracias por ser paciente con ellos y por enseñarles de una manera diferente y divertida. Tienes un espíritu de niña, que espero que no cambies jamás, gracias por compartir y jugar con los estudiantes incluso en los recesos, muchas gracias por sembrar esperanza en sus corazones. Dentro de nuestro hogar, nos dejas con un vacío muy grande en nuestros corazones. Eres una de las personas más humildes que hemos tenido la dicha de conocer. Gracias por apoyarnos en todo lo que estaba a tu alcance, eres polifacética cuando lo amerita, te desempeñaste como: cocinera, carpintera, mecánica, veterinaria, traductora y consejera. La pasión que tienes para practicar deportes y realizar actividades al aire libre también es de admirar, y a la vez es una motivación muy fuerte para mantener hábitos saludables.

Workawayers:

I had the pleasure to stay and teach in the lovely town of Cañar for about four months. I haven't taught English before, but they brought me in and gave me materials to help me teach my classes. The school has a book and learning objectives, but other than that you are free to structure the class however you would like! You have about eight hours of total class time each week. Two hours on Tuesday and Thursday and four hours on Saturday. Also, don’t worry if you don’t speak Spanish because you will have a translator/assistant. The class size is max, twelve students. During the week you teach with the volunteers you live with. On Saturdays, other volunteers come and help because there are more classes. I had a great time working with the students. I enjoyed coming up with different activities and games for them to learn English.

The accommodations were great. The house runs like a little family, so we take turns cooking meals and washing dishes. We each have a day assigned to us to wash our clothes, so sharing the washer is easy. Of course, there are also laundromats in town if you choose to go that route. My room was perfect for what I needed. The house is located about five minutes from town and the bus is easily accessible. Cañar has everything you might need, I only had to buy a few things from Cuenca that Cañar didn't have, but they weren’t the necessities. I lived with So usually there are only three volunteers total. They have the two cutest little dogs Malcocha and Patacon. They are the best of buds! You will have free time to explore around! There are hiking trails, towns like Biblian, Azogues, and Cuenca close by. Usually, we went to watch the neighborhood soccer games, which was a lot of fun.

As an English language teacher, Meli is exemplary. She is very responsible, creative and professional. She has a lot of experience teaching, which allowed the students to learn in many different ways. This includes games which the students enjoyed very much and had a lot of fun with. I am convinced that the children of my little canton, between the ages of 5 and 15, were fortunate to have our beloved Melisa as their teacher. Your students will surely miss you very much, thank you for giving them hope and a quality education.
Inside our house, where we shared many pleasant moments, Meli was a very orderly and collaborative person. Thank you for that smile that allowed us to start the day in a happy mood. Thank you for the affection shown to Melcocha (our little dog). Thank you for being part of our family and for supporting us at all times. Thank you for the motivation to run, walk, and exercise every morning, don't change those healthy habits that you also instilled in us. Thank you so much. You will always be welcome in our home. Fueron casi dos meses el tiempo que compartimos contigo. Dos meses qué pasó muy rápido, este tipo de experiencias nos obliga a valorar el tiempo y a vivirlo más intensamente, porque después nos quedan únicamente recuerdos. Por esta razón, considero afortunado a las personas que puedan hospedar y compartir tiempo con Melisa, no desaprovechen esta gran oportunidad.
Como docente en la enseñanza del idioma inglés, Meli es ejemplar. Es muy responsable, creativa y profesional. Tiene mucha experiencia enseñando, lo que permite a los estudiantes aprender de una manera divertida a través de juegos. Estoy convencido que los niños de mi pequeño cantón, de la edad de 5 a 15 años, tuvieron la suerte de tener como maestra a nuestra apreciada Melisa. Living with Ludo for almost two months was fantastic. Ludo is a very happy person who is passionate about cooking. He is also very considerate of the other people that he lives with. Ludo is a neat and clean person to live with. With all of the activities we did, he was enthusiastic and charismatic. He likes to be an active person; we always went on morning runs together.

El vivir con Ludo por casi dos meses fue fantástico. Ludo se caracteriza por ser una persona muy alegre a quien le apasiona cocinar, tiene mucha consideración con las demás personas con las que convive, es muy limpio y muy carismático, además es una persona muy atlética que ha realizado ejercicio desde muy niño.
