    Description

    Hi
we are Linda and Andy a couple who love to travel the world who have finally found their patch of paradise to call home in Weetah.
Located near Deloraine, a picturesque town in Northern Tassie, our 25 acre block is something special.
We've both studied Horticulture and Landscape design and are planning to regenerate the land. This will involve a lot of picking up sticks and weeding! There's also a lot of propagating ferns and gentle landscaping to regenerate the land for our resident Tasmanian devils! We also want to clear up the creek that runs through the property. We have been told by a previous owner there was once a platypus living in the creek and we aim to regenerate it to bring him back! :)
We also need to set up our food production aiming to adhere to permaculture principle. Workers need to know this is rural Tassie, with all the wildlife including spiders and leeches and there's snakes in summer, but common sense is all you need to avoid them. We also have a cat Mr Meowie who rules the house but is also super shy.

As a couple who have prioritised exploring the world, we love meeting people from all over and sharing experiences. Warning: we have travelled a lot and talking travel is one of our favourite things, so for better or worse you will likely leave with a bunch of recommendations! We have found sharing travel stories with each other is a great way to connect with past workawayers.

On a more practical level we have horticulture skills to pass along and its a magical place to go explore.
We are also part of an amazing local community and attend monthly drum circles at friends houses and bio dynamic gardening groups . We sometimes host these events. We include people staying when possible which is a great way to experience some of the amazing scenery and community around here. We're also pretty keen to take people to the pub on a Friday night to get a feel for Deloraine and check out the free live music.

  • Help

    Help

We working on the gardens closest to the house and trying to regenerate the rest of the block including putting in a walking track and cleaning up the creek.
This means there's a lot of outdoor tasks we'd love help with. Weeding, building benches, planning vegetable patch, pruning fruit trees, collecting and cutting firewood. We also want to build a lot of rock garden bed walls and would love help with that. Sometimes it will be helping with us, we are here full time, some tasks would be solo.

We are happy to share our skills and knowledge around horticulture and landscape design.
With some flexibility around weather, days would be something like:
    Mon - Fri
DIY breakfast (cereal, milk, bread and spreads provided)
Start work 9, tea break 10:30.
Break together for lunch we provide around 1-1:30 depending on weather and how day/week has gone, another hour or so after lunch then arvo to yourself
Dinner provided by us, helper washes up. We make wicked pizzas so hope you like pizza ! Can also cater to any dietary requirements. We eat meat a few times a week. Would love for anyone who loves cooking to share their favorite recipes with us.

    Weekends off, self cater.

Happy to host anyone regardless of language barriers. We both attempted to learn Arabic, Hindi and Spanish and appreciate what it's like to communicate with little shared language. And, thankfully there's google translate !

    Accommodation

We have a cabin that needs restoring so it's a bit rough at the moment, but comfortable enough and private with nice views from the balcony. Would suit a couple or someone ok with their own company. It has a double bed. There's also a woodfire, a small kitchenette and a hot shower and toilet. There is a possum living on/in the roof who can sometimes be seen on the cabin verandah. There's also a family of sugar glider possums living in one wall of the cabin. There is NO SMELL inside as they can't enter the building. It is our intention to rehouse them into purpose built boxes but in the meantime it's likely you will hear them at night. It's not much sound, just some occasional scratching and everyone who has slept there has been unbothered. We have a campervan that has a diesel heater and a queen bed in it and is super comfy. We understand if you would prefer that due to the noise at night from the animal roomates. We have a lot of land so there's a bunch of lovely places for people with their own campers/vans to set up, including around the cabin.
We have wifi internet in the cabin which can reach the camper if parked nearby. Telstra is better for phone service.
We are a bit out of town with no shops in walking distance, so your own transport would be ideal. That said we do tend to go into town a couple of times a week so can take people in with us.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

There's beautiful walks on the property and the surrounding area has many beautiful walks such as Liffey Falls and Huntsman Lake and there's local caves to visit. Deloraine is a gorgeous little town with soul. Friday night live music at the local pub is fun and sometimes Andy even plays !
It is a rural property which means it comes with a host of wildlife including occasional snakes leeches and spiders. You've been warned!
