    Description

We are Rob and Irene, and our children Flynn (12) and Eva (5). We are improving our property and establishing a big garden with the goal of producing the majority of our own food. We've lived in various places around Australia, including many years in remote Arnhemland in the Northern Territory, and after moving two years ago we now call this beautiful part of Tassie home.

Our beautiful property is 25 acres of bush and temperate rainforest in the foothills of Quamby Bluff, in the Great Western Tiers. We are in a great central location close to lots of walking tracks, state forests and national parks, and 15 minutes to Deloraine, where you will find all your basic needs including a Woolworths. 50 minutes' drive to both Launceston and Devonport in the other direction.

We are relaxed and easy-going people. Irene works full time as a special needs lead teacher in Deloraine, and the kids go to the local primary school. Rob is working on establishing our large, self-sufficient garden, as well as being the primary at-home parent. We also have a Blue Heeler dog Ranger, who is a big softie, and will love you forever if you play fetch with him. In our spare time we love to go hiking around our beautiful local area, garden, and cook.

We will ask for 4-5 hours of work a day, but are flexible around days off for trips or outings. We can offer transport to Deloraine on weekdays. Work will vary seasonally, but will usually be helping Rob with general garden maintenance, planting and harvesting, helping with collecting and stacking firewood, and making and collecting mulch.

Accommodation can be camping (we can provide a large Oz Tent, and all bedding), or in a private spare room with a comfortable sofa bed. Bathroom and kitchen facilities are shared with the family.

We hope to share with you our approach to living simply, growing as much of our food as possible, and treading lightly on the earth. You will be sharing our living spaces with us, and we would love to share our experiences, food, and conversation with you.
Rob is a bit of a jack-of-all-trades and depending on what jobs are on the go, you may be able to help him and learn concreting, fencing, or basic building skills, as well as gardening, and general property maintenance. Irene loves to be in the kitchen and has worked as a cook, and enjoys baking bread, cakes and biscuits in the wood oven, as well as making seasonal preserves.
We've lived in various interesting places around Australia and would love to share our experiences of our beautiful country with you, and we would love to hear about yours.

    Help

Work will vary depending on seasons and skills, but will generally be helping Rob throughout the week on garden maintenance, weeding, planting, harvesting, feeding the chooks and collecting eggs, splitting and stacking wood, making and spreading mulch, as well as possibly a little child minding.
If interested, there is the opportunity to learn how to use some of our machinery such as the mulcher, buggy, and skid steer.

    Accommodation

Accommodation is either camping or in our private spare room, with a comfy double sofa bed. Bathroom and kitchen facilities are shared. We have one bathroom with a shower and bath. Our kitchen is a little dated but functional, and has a gas stovetop and wood-fired bakers oven.

All basic food provided. As a busy family, we will take a casual approach to meals. We try to eat relatively early at the table on school nights and you will be welcome to eat with us, or cook your own meals later. We welcome all and any foods. We can provide any seasonal produce from the garden as well as fresh eggs. Breakfast and lunch self-serve.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

There's so much to do around the beautiful Meander Valley region. We would be happy to show you walking tracks and swimming holes in the area, or direct you to our favourite places.
Since moving here two years ago, we've been lucky enough to see several auroras, and we get a little snow every winter. The scenery, climate and forests are breathtaking.
We can arrange transport to and from Deloraine, and there are buses from Deloraine to Launceston, Hobart and Devonport.
We are occasional drinkers and enjoy the odd glass of wine or gin and tonic. Irene is a non-smoker and Rob is an ex-smoker so we'll understand if you need to smoke outside. We have an inside dog.

Handsome and calm, likes to pretend to be tough (and has a loud bark to complete the image) but is a big softie. Loves balls, sticks, food, and pats.
