    Description

We live on a wooded property just outside Cork City in the south of Ireland and this will be our first time hosting through Workaway. We are looking forward to meeting travellers from different countries and sharing everyday life here while also learning about other cultures and experiences.

Our home is located near the village of Glanmire, only a short distance from Cork City. Although the city and local shops are close by, the property itself feels quiet and peaceful as it is surrounded by mature trees, woodland and open fields.

The property includes our home and a small timber guest cabin set among the trees. The cabin is sometimes used by visitors who are looking for a quiet retreat close to nature, and we enjoy gradually improving the surrounding garden and woodland areas so that the whole space remains a calm and welcoming environment.

One of the main reasons we wanted to join Workaway is the opportunity for cultural exchange. We enjoy meeting people from different countries and hearing about their lives, traditions and travel experiences. We hope that visitors who stay with us will feel comfortable sharing their own culture, stories and ideas while also experiencing everyday life in Ireland.

We are always happy to talk about local places to visit and the surrounding area offers many interesting trips including Cork City, nearby coastal towns and scenic parts of the Irish countryside. There are also many opportunities for walking and enjoying nature close to the house.

From time to time we work together on small outdoor tasks around the property. This might include light gardening, helping maintain garden areas, tidying woodland paths or assisting with simple painting or small maintenance projects. The work is generally relaxed and we usually work alongside our visitors.

Ray spent many years as a professional musician and still plays regularly. Music has always been an important part of his life and he enjoys talking about music and occasionally playing for friends and visitors.

Angela previously ran businesses and now spends much of her time pursuing creative interests such as weaving, sewing, crochet and making natural soaps and skin products. She enjoys creative projects and learning new skills from people with different interests.

We both enjoy travelling and spend a lot of time exploring Ireland and Europe in our campervan. Hosting travellers feels like a natural extension of this interest in travel and cultural exchange.

Our home is best suited to people who enjoy a quiet environment, nature and spending some time outdoors while experiencing a relaxed part of life in Ireland.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Although we live in a quiet countryside setting, our home is only about twenty minutes from Cork City. Cork has a lively cultural atmosphere with music, markets, festivals and restaurants throughout the year, and many travellers enjoy exploring the city as well as nearby coastal towns and countryside areas. Public transport from nearby Glanmire also provides access to the city.

We are interested in welcoming travellers from different countries and learning about their cultures and experiences. One of the aspects we look forward to most is the opportunity for cultural exchange and the chance to share some everyday aspects of Irish life while learning about other places in the world.

Music is often part of life here. Ray spent many years as a professional musician and plays several instruments including guitar and piano. Travellers who enjoy music may find it interesting to talk about music or play informally together.

Angela enjoys creative crafts such as weaving, sewing, crochet and making natural soaps and skincare products. Travellers who are interested in creative work sometimes enjoy seeing these projects and exchanging ideas or skills.

We also look forward to learning from visitors who may bring practical knowledge, gardening ideas, cooking traditions from their home country or creative interests. The exchange of experiences and perspectives is something we hope will be a rewarding part of the experience for everyone involved.

  • Help

    Help

We have just under an acre of land with woodland, garden areas and outdoor spaces that we are gradually maintaining and improving. Most of the activities around the property take place outdoors, so the experience is likely to suit people who enjoy being outside and are comfortable helping with practical tasks in a garden environment.

When working on projects around the property, we expect to work alongside volunteers and explain what needs to be done. The intention is simply to work together on small tasks that contribute to maintaining and improving the outdoor areas.

    Typical activities may include:

    • helping with general gardening and planting
    • tidying garden areas and outdoor spaces
    • maintaining woodland paths and small walking areas
    • moving branches or natural materials after garden tasks
    • assisting with simple outdoor projects around the garden
    • occasional painting or small maintenance tasks.

None of the activities require specialist skills, and instructions can be explained as needed. People who enjoy practical activities or working outdoors may find these projects interesting and satisfying.

Previous experience with gardening or DIY can be helpful but is not essential. A positive attitude and a willingness to take part in practical tasks are more important.

The aim is simply to do tasks together on outdoor projects while leaving plenty of time for volunteers to relax, enjoy the surroundings and explore the local area.

    Accommodation

Helpers stay in our separate guest cabin located on the property among the trees. The cabin normally welcomes visiting guests and provides a comfortable and quiet place to stay during your time with us.

The cabin is just a short walk from our house but has its own space and outdoor area, allowing you to enjoy the woodland setting and peaceful atmosphere. Helpers have a good level of privacy while still being part of our home environment.

    The cabin includes:

    • bedroom with a double bed
    • loft room with two single beds
    • bathroom with shower
    • kitchen area with fridge/freezer, hob, dishwasher and cooking equipment
    • WiFi internet access.

You are also welcome to use our barrel sauna beside the cabin, which looks out into the surrounding woodland and is a favourite place to relax after a day outdoors.

The setting here is very peaceful and many visitors enjoy the quiet atmosphere, the birds and the feeling of being surrounded by nature.

We provide ingredients for three meals per day and there is a fully equipped kitchen in the cabin where you can prepare your meals.

From time to time we also enjoy sharing meals or coffee together, which is a nice opportunity to talk about travel, life in Ireland and different cultures.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We are Ray and Angela, a married couple living in the countryside just outside Cork City. Our two adult children have already left home, so the house is generally quiet and relaxed.

In our spare time we enjoy travelling, skiing, kayaking, cycling, hill walking and exploring Ireland in our campervan. We are always interested in hearing about other people’s travel experiences and learning about places around the world.

We enjoy cooking and good food, usually based around meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables sourced from local regenerative or organic farms. We also enjoy discovering dishes from different cuisines and learning about food traditions from other countries.

We share the property with several semi-feral cats who gradually adopted us. Arthur arrived first, followed by Mrs Arthur and their two adventurous offspring, Ollie and Suzy. They are still a little wild but becoming friendlier over time.

The property is in a quiet countryside setting with woodland walks nearby, while Cork City is about twenty minutes away and offers music, markets, restaurants and other cultural activities.

The atmosphere here is generally peaceful and independent. The guest cabin is separate from the house, so visitors have their own space while still being part of the overall environment of the property. The setting suits people who enjoy nature, quiet surroundings and spending time outdoors.
