Description
We live on a wooded property just outside Cork City in the south of Ireland and this will be our first time hosting through Workaway. Our first available dates are 10th to 24th March and 6th to 18th April 2026. We are looking forward to meeting travellers from different countries and sharing everyday life here while also learning about other cultures and experiences.
Our home is located near the village of Glanmire, only a short distance from Cork City. Although the city and local shops are close by, the property itself feels quiet and peaceful as it is surrounded by mature trees, woodland and open fields.
The property includes our home and a small timber guest cabin set among the trees. The cabin is sometimes used by visitors who are looking for a quiet retreat close to nature, and we enjoy gradually improving the surrounding garden and woodland areas so that the whole space remains a calm and welcoming environment.
One of the main reasons we wanted to join Workaway is the opportunity for cultural exchange. We enjoy meeting people from different countries and hearing about their lives, traditions and travel experiences. We hope that visitors who stay with us will feel comfortable sharing their own culture, stories and ideas while also experiencing everyday life in Ireland.
We are always happy to talk about local places to visit and the surrounding area offers many interesting trips including Cork City, nearby coastal towns and scenic parts of the Irish countryside. There are also many opportunities for walking and enjoying nature close to the house.
From time to time we work together on small outdoor tasks around the property. This might include light gardening, helping maintain garden areas, tidying woodland paths or assisting with simple painting or small maintenance projects. The work is generally relaxed and we usually work alongside our visitors.
Ray spent many years as a professional musician and still plays regularly. Music has always been an important part of his life and he enjoys talking about music and occasionally playing for friends and visitors.
Angela previously ran businesses and now spends much of her time pursuing creative interests such as weaving, sewing, crochet and making natural soaps and skin products. She enjoys creative projects and learning new skills from people with different interests.
We both enjoy travelling and spend a lot of time exploring Ireland and Europe in our campervan. Hosting travellers feels like a natural extension of this interest in travel and cultural exchange.
Our home is best suited to people who enjoy a quiet environment, nature and spending some time outdoors while experiencing a relaxed part of life in Ireland.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Although we live in a quiet countryside setting, we are only about twenty minutes from Cork City, which has a lively cultural life with music, markets, festivals and restaurants throughout the year. Visitors often enjoy exploring the city as well as nearby coastal towns and countryside areas.
Public transport from nearby Glanmire provides easy access to the city.
At home we enjoy sharing everyday life and interests with visitors from different countries. Workaway for us is mainly about cultural exchange and meeting people from different backgrounds, learning about their countries and experiences, and sharing some aspects of Irish life.
Music is often part of life here. Ray spent many years as a professional musician and plays several instruments including guitar and piano. Visitors who enjoy music often enjoy conversations about music or informal playing together.
Angela enjoys creative crafts such as weaving, sewing, crochet and making natural soaps and skincare products. Visitors who are interested in creative work sometimes enjoy seeing these projects and sharing their own skills or ideas.
We also enjoy learning from our visitors. Many travellers bring interesting knowledge and experiences, whether practical skills, gardening ideas, cooking from their home country or creative interests, and we find these exchanges one of the most rewarding parts of hosting.
Help
We have just under an acre of land with woodland, garden areas and outdoor spaces which we gradually look after and improve. Much of the help around the property is outdoors, so this experience is best suited to people who enjoy spending time outside and are comfortable doing practical tasks in the garden.
Visitors usually help us for a few hours each day and we normally work alongside them when doing projects around the property.
Typical activities may include:
• helping with general gardening and planting
• tidying garden areas and outdoor spaces
• maintaining woodland paths and small walking areas
• moving branches or natural materials after garden work
• assisting with simple outdoor projects around the garden
• occasional painting or small maintenance tasks.
None of the tasks require specialist skills and we are always happy to explain what needs to be done. People who enjoy practical activities or working outdoors usually find the projects satisfying.
Previous experience with gardening or DIY is welcome but certainly not necessary. Enthusiasm, a positive attitude and a willingness to try new things are just as important.
We aim to keep the work relaxed and varied and always make sure there is plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings and explore the local area.

Accommodation
Helpers stay in our separate guest cabin located on the property among the trees. The cabin normally welcomes visiting guests and provides a comfortable and quiet place to stay during your time with us.
The cabin is just a short walk from our house but has its own space and outdoor area, allowing you to enjoy the woodland setting and peaceful atmosphere. Helpers have a good level of privacy while still being part of our home environment.
The cabin includes:
• bedroom with a double bed
• loft room with two single beds
• bathroom with shower
• kitchen area with fridge/freezer, hob, dishwasher and cooking equipment
• WiFi internet access.
You are also welcome to use our barrel sauna beside the cabin, which looks out into the surrounding woodland and is a favourite place to relax after a day outdoors.
The setting here is very peaceful and many visitors enjoy the quiet atmosphere, the birds and the feeling of being surrounded by nature.
We provide ingredients for three meals per day and there is a fully equipped kitchen in the cabin where you can prepare your meals.
From time to time we also enjoy sharing meals or coffee together, which is a nice opportunity to talk about travel, life in Ireland and different cultures.
What else ...
We, Ray and Angela, are married and our two adult children have already left home, so the house is generally quiet and relaxed.
In our spare time we enjoy travelling, skiing, kayaking, cycling, hill walking and exploring Ireland in our campervan. We enjoy hearing about other people’s travel experiences and often exchange ideas about interesting places to visit.
We enjoy cooking and eating good food, usually based around meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables sourced from local regenerative or organic farms. We also enjoy trying dishes from different cuisines and often find that visitors introduce us to new foods from their home countries.
We share the property with several semi-feral cats who gradually adopted us. Arthur arrived first, followed by Mrs Arthur and their two adventurous offspring, Ollie and Suzy. They are still a little wild but becoming friendlier all the time.
In their free time helpers usually enjoy exploring the surrounding countryside, walking nearby woodland paths or visiting Cork City, which is about twenty minutes away and has a lively cultural life with music, markets and restaurants.
The atmosphere here is generally peaceful and independent. Because the guest cabin is separate from the house, visitors usually have plenty of personal space while still being part of the household environment. Many helpers enjoy relaxing in the garden, spending time in nature or using the sauna after a day outdoors.
