Description
Help with home projects – large house with pool near Newcastle
We’re a friendly Swedish–Australian family living just outside Newcastle in a large home with a pool, and we’re looking for a WorkAwayer to join us for a couple of weeks in March to help with some house and outdoor projects.
We have three young kids (a 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old twin boys). Our new au pair will be starting in April, so during March we’d mainly love help with house projects and general help around the home, with some occasional cooking and light help with the kids in the morning when things are a bit busy.
At the moment, we’re refurbishing our downstairs room and would really appreciate help with things like painting, laying floorboards, and general DIY tasks.
We also have a few outdoor projects, including an area where we’ve dug a drainage ditch that now needs to be filled with rocks and tidied up so we can make the outdoor space usable again. There may also be some gardening, deck maintenance, and general help around the house.
You don’t need construction experience, but it would be great if you have a good understanding of basic renovations, are practical and good with your hands, and feel comfortable using simple power tools. All work will be clearly explained and guided, so the most important thing is a positive attitude and willingness to help.
We’re a social, active and welcoming family who love spending time outdoors — going to the beach, going on bush walks, or swimming in the pool with the kids.
In exchange, we offer:
- Your own private bedroom and bathroom
- All meals and drinks (alcohol within reason)
- A relaxed and friendly home environment
We ask for 20 hours of help per week, typically 4 hours per day across 5 days, with flexibility depending on the projects.
If you enjoy practical projects, being outdoors, and staying with a busy and welcoming family, we’d love to hear from you.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We are a multicultural family, Swedish and Australian, with a Swedish au pair who is 21 years old.
We’re social and often have friends and family over for visits and meals.
We go to the beach, the park and are quite outdoorsy, so happy to show you around the area. We have push bikes you’re welcome to use and often we dog sit for family and friends, so there’s opportunities to take the dog our for a walk.
