    Description

Our lodge is situated in Monkey Bay towards the southern end of Lake Malawi and on the edge of Lake Malawi National Park, the only freshwater national park in the world. We're a well established lodge on the tourist trail through Malawi, due to our idyllic location and social atmosphere, that attracts interesting people from all around the world.

As Eco Lodge we're committed to a sustainable lifestyle in a close-to-nature setting. Sustainability, per definition, does not only include ecological actions, but extends to the community we're operating in. Next to the day to day operations of the lodge, the owner is involved in several social projects that can be part of the volonteering experience. The lodge is being run by Riki, a retired human rights lawyer, born and bred in central Africa.

Malawi is frequently ranked among the poorest countries in the world. We're looking for mature volonteers that can handle living and working among impoverished communities and do not have romanticized illusions about volonteering in developing countries. This country is battling many issues, for example with its educational system, malnutrition or skyrocketing inflation - do some good for Malawi, but don't expect to change this country in a few weeks.

The required work depends heavily on your personal experience. While we have staff for all positions needed for our day-to-day, during busy times you may be required to assist in any of the departments.

Popular tasks for Workawayers proved to be the managing of our social media accounts, gardening, help with special maintenance projects or creative art works. During certain times of the year, volunteers might be required to assist with projects that rather have to do with my social projects, than the usual work around the lodge.
Most of the time we manage to find projects for any kind of special talents, that are applicable in the context of managing a lodge.

When reaching out, please pitch me your idea of how your set of skills could benefit this project.

From our lodge, you can start short and long hiking trails, swim in Lake Malawi, kayak around the bay, snorkel or watch the monkeys play and sometimes spot hippos and crocodiles. Our location is truly unique and if you're looking to spent some time in nature by the lake, look no further. Monkey Bay itself is a typical African small town, offering some shops, an ATM and a weekly market. Monkey Bay is known as the departure point of the Ilala ferry, leaving every friday, that heads north almost all the way to Tanzania.
The touristic town of Cape MacLear is about 20km away and makes for a nice day trip. On their weekends, volunteers can do short trips to many places, like Zomba, Liwonde National Park or Blantyre.
Monkey Bay can be easily reached by public transport from all mayor towns, like Lilongwe, Blantyre or Zomba.

Our lodge provides a lot of seating opportunities, to get some work done. Best would be to bring an Airtel Pocket-Wifi (can be bought in all major cities) to ensure a reliable fast internet connection.
