You volunteer for 5 days of the week on a rota basis so we are unable to tell you which days until you arrive. You get two full days off per week but these days are not necessarily consecutive. You may spend your free time as you wish.
Chalkidiki is a tourist destination and there are many beautiful beaches and places to visit.

The shelter is located in a non residential area, mostly rural and offers opportunity for walks in nature.
There is bus connection with Thessaloniki and with other cities in Chalkidiki, mainly with Nea Kallikratia.
The airport is a 15 min car drive from the shelter. We provide pick up from the airport, even at weekends and for evening flights.
Nea Kallikratia is the seaside city, which is nearest to the shelter, it is a 12 min car ride. There are organized beaches and local restaurants and social events available there.
There is also a village in a 15 minutes walk from the shelter, where there are bakeries, mini markets, coffe shops and pharmacy.

    Help

Volunteer and make a lasting impact on the well-being of our dogs and cats and other animals (goats, chickens) through dedicated care and support.
Gain hands-on experience and learn basic care procedures, expanding your skills and knowledge in animal welfare
As a volunteer you will be expected to help with the day to day running of the shelter.
There's a lot of cleaning up to do, along with feeding, giving medication, looking out for signs of illness, brushing the dogs, spent time with the dogs. Socializing with dogs and walking with them is also something one can do.
In the first days you will be shown exactly how the shelter works and you will get to know the founder, other volunteers and the animals.

In general, your tasks will include the activities such as feeding the dogs and cats, cleaning the dog's areas, brushing the animals when needed, taking care of sick animals, walks with the dogs or assisting with social media posts.
Please be aware that you have to be physically fit to do the tasks , for example, to be able to lift and carry a bucket full of feed/water ( during feeding) etc.
During your daily work, you will usually take care of common tasks at the shelter, assist with online activities such as social media posts, and procure much-needed supplies for the shelter (e.g. food, fur brushes, leashes, etc.).

You will also spoil the four-legged friends with lots of love and affection, play sessions and walks. This will socialize them and make them adoptable so they can find a permanent home with a loving family as soon as possible.

To participate in the project, you do not need any previous experience. Only the joy of working with animals and the ability to work well in a team is necessary.
We expect our volunteers to be punctual, flexible, physically fit, attentive and keen to learn.
In return we will be there to support you and to show you how to complete your daily tasks to get the most from your stay.

No special equipment is required. Only clothes and shoes appropriate to the season in which you are travelling. Winter - conditions can be cold and wet and therefore muddy. Summer - the weather is hot and humid and much time is spent outdoors. Whatever the season - ALWAYS wear sensible shoes that give support and comfort.

    Typical day
The dogs are divided into 5 sections –
Each of our volunteers take part in the daily duties, based on their experience. For example:
    • Food preparation,Feeding, Pick up the feeding bowls
    • Administering medication
    • Cleaning the living areas
    • Providing water throughout the day
    • General observation and daily caring
    • Cleaning and feeding of the other animals (goats, cats, chickens)
    • Walking the dogs
Despite this being predominantly a husbandry focused placement there is ample opportunity each day to help with clinical aspects, when there is interest in this matter. Some of these activities include:
    • Flushing and cleaning wounds
    • Cleaning, bandaging and monitoring improvement of injuries
    • Administering specialized medications
    • Treating dogs with long term diseases

Each day is different. We never know what the day will bring and flexibility is key. Therefore it is not possible to give a timetable.
