    Description

We are two friends, Pablo and Dominique.

Together we have a small piece of land in the middle of the coffee region in Colombia. The property is next to the "reserva natural Barbas Bremen" 15 minutes walking to the Barbas river and about 1,5 hours walking from Filandia. The land was overtaken in 2021. Since then, we started step by step with constructing an eco-hostel, using Guadua, a type of bamboo which is endemic to that latitudes and sustainable to use for construction purposes.
Our plan is to transform the piece of land into an ecological hostel, which suits to give people the space to reconnect with nature. The land is next to a quiet road which takes people, especially at the weekend, to the natural reserve and we would like to offer some organic meals and environmental education to the visitors. In the future, we are working to recultivate the forest with the help of permaculture principles. Currently, we are starting to do some gardening of vegetables, but also herbs, and spices and to plant some trees which give fruit, and flowers, attract more birds, monkeys, etc. There are already some trees where you will find several kind of hummingbirds and other larger birds throughout the day.
We currently do not have other people working on the farm than friends, woofers and workawayers.

Oh. we have two dogs. Sometimes Noah is still a bit clumsy, but he is very much into people and both dogs love to make you laugh. However, you should not be afraid of tall dogs...

You have the chance to learn and contribute to the before-mentioned fields. If you have further ideas to engage, you are welcome to propose them. We can do some tours in the area in the nature reserve to spot birds, and monkeys, visit waterfalls, natural river pools, viewpoints, beautiful coffee villages, etc. We also provide information on our projects, the local flora and fauna, hiking routes, and other places to visit. We have binoculars for animal watching and do campfires from time to time.

For now, we made the best experience with: You show up and within the first two days, we will figure out how and how much you can help us with the construction tasks, gardening or any other type of work. This will, of course, come along with an honest evaluation and feedback from both sides (hosts and volunteers) to help everyone learn and improve. Depending on that we can come to a decision if we work and live together for a more extended period of time. Life on the Finca can be hard at times and every day comes with many tasks that have to be done but we do also have afternoons for going to the River with the dogs, reading, watching a movie or whatever. However, always try to help the others around you when you spot an opportunity, give your best in terms of work ethic and be generous. It's not only about the hours you work, it's also about the effort you squeeze into a given time frame. Arriving with something you can share with us is nice, and so do we!

Our day usually starts around 6:30-7:00 am. when the dogs are excited of going to the river for a first bath. Afterwards the day can start refreshed. Of course you don't have to go with the dogs if you don't like to, but at around 7:30 first things to work at are starting...In general, all basic living tasks like cooking, cleaning the house, etc. are shared among volunteers and hosts since we all appreciate the pleasure of having a clean home and delicious food. Depending on the day there are common tasks such as planting trees and other plants, construction work, cutting and carrying wood, etc.

However, you are welcome to start a project with your own idea, be it to be creative in painting a wall, or designing a new table in the way you like.
Every type of help is appreciated and we are looking forward to exchanging ideas, and expertise and most importantly to having fun in what we are doing.

Pablo is still not very advanced in his English skills and open to help you with improving your Spanish and to learn some english vocabularies from you. Of course, both of us are always happy to learn new words in other languages than english, too!

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

As we have only recently started the project, besides the main building and some trees, the farm is still sort of empty. However, that is precisely why we would love to have you around. For now, we can offer you a bed or a hammock (everyone prefers something different :)). We will do our best to accommodate you as best as possible. We plan to plant platano and bananas, citrus fruits, herbs, yucca, vegetables, etc. Hopefully, soon we can offer you a nutritious and organic meal for lunch. For now, we will offer you the best food we can, but most wont be from our own garden yet.

Overall, we love to share, and we would love it if you shared with us whatever you could. Primarily, we need help with construction and gardening, but also painting, cooking, advertisement, or whatever you think of is appreciated.

There are 3 meals each day. Breakfast is usually prepared by the person who wakes up first, dinner by altogether. Basic food is provided; expenses for additional food or extras are up to you (Alcohol, smoking, sweets, etc.).

    What else ...

You can walk from the place of accommodation to the nature reserve, as it starts where the farm ends. We have visits of howler monkeys almost every day. There is an uncountable variety of bird species. The river Barbas is one border of the farm, where you can go for refreshing swims. Having at least a basic level of Spanish would be an advantage. Our common language spoken is Spanish as some people do not speak other languages (Communication with Pablo will be in Spanish only). Whenever Dominique is on the farm, German and English are possible too.
