Our organisation was founded on 2nd October 2005 and is an animal welfare organisation, officially registered both in Switzerland and in Kos, Greece. Primarily we are involved with relieving animal suffering on the island of Kos, Greece, through sterilisation and education. The stray dogs on Kos are regularly poisoned, run over and simply thrown out onto the streets. The majority of these dogs are not sterilised and therefore multiply without control. This situation is becoming worse as the economy falls into further decline. A few dogs get rehomed, namely those which have no chance of survival if left on the streets; however, this is a secondary aim. Our goal is to create change at root source and influence people's attitude to animals in general.
Our shelter is 10 minutes by car from the sea and you can see the sea in the distance from the house. Behind, there are lovely mountains with superb walks. Apart from helping with the animals, we need our volunteers to help on the info stand for tourists, so we are looking for people who are confident and outgoing. All volunteers get 2 days off during the week. Having a driver's licence is a great asset. Internet access for emergencies only (due expense) but we pass a café daily with internet access. From mid October 2019 till beginning of May 2020, we need someone to take care of the shelter, ideally two people together. During this time, there will only be one cat and a few chickens to take care of plus feeding some stray cats on the island; it's basically a house-sitting period for people who would like to spend a few months away from home in an idyllic setting.
What we offer you:
- accommodation and food on site. Due to the nature of our work, we do not have set eating times as we all often have slightly different schedules. There will be a weekly team meeting to discuss what food volunteers require and the kitchen in the flat will be stocked with everything to use at your disposal. On our animal sanctuary, we eat vegetarian food; meat is not allowed on site. Workawayers get 2 days off a week.
- a chance to discover Greece, and the sea is just 10 mins. away
Volunteer work consists of helping with cat catching for sterilisation, administering medicines under supervision, taking animals to vets, cleaning animals' accommodation, caring for the cats, training the dogs if capable, attending cruelty cases with head carer, caring for wounded animals, feeding and shampooing the animals. Very varied day on and off site. There is plenty of time every day for leisure activities, swimming, riding etc.
You will profit from free professional training in animal care.
