    *** English & Español info***

This project promotes sustainable community development and entrepreneurship through eco-turism and agro-ecology, looking to have a positive impact on cultural, environmental and social aspects of the local population and visitors.

Alta Verapaz is a department located in the north of Guatemala, about 200 km from Guatemala City. Cobán, the closest urban area 65km away, is the third most populated department in Guatemala with almost one and a half million inhabitants but but very high rates of poverty and malnutrition in the entire country. Lanquín is a village in the department of Alta Verapaz. Its name means “village surrounded by straw” being part of the Q’eqchi territory and one of the richest environments in nature of Guatemala due to the wonders offered by its humid forests.

We are a team of 4 Administration Team - Communications, Sales, Production, Hospitality. We also have a local team of 6 from the Lanquin community that support production, agroecology and kitchen staff that run our day to day operations! A great opportunity to work directly alongside them, maybe picking up a few words in Qeqchi :)

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Participating in the daily activities you interact with the local community, as a path that goes through the land leads to a small community up the mountain. As well as many of our local staff love to interact and exchange conversations and information with foreigners. Every week we have a meal all together and while many times they speak Qeqchi together we all speak the same language of smiles and laughter.

One of the most important approaches is collective work through the creation and strengthening of a network of local producers of crops such as cocoa, turmeric, ginger, Copal, cinnamon, cardamom and several other native species. With the aim of making handmade products derived from these crops, to create fair trade markets. Many of the members of the community will pass through and work with us during the days which is a good opportunity to share time peeling cacao with the (Kanas) women or working in the kitchen with Sylvia, or in the fields with the Kawas (men).

Lanqúin is a Mayan Keq'chi town with spectacular natural beauties such as the Semuc Champey waterfalls, the Lanqúin and Cahabón rivers, and underground caves.

We are creating spaces for an intentional tourism alternative to the conventional. A tourism where the participants are interested in cultural, ecological, regenerative exchange and positive impact to the local community and other visitors.

    ***********

As a volunteer, you will gain practical experience in local and sustainable methods. We seek to work and share collectively helping in the different day-to-day needs of the project in general. Depending on the time of year and the weather, the tasks will change around the areas and we are interested in knowing what you would like to support and/or have experience in, to focus your volunteering in one of these areas: host/hospitality in ecotourism, agriculture / permaculture, social networks, educational eco-projects.

Currently (marzo 2024) We are looking for volunteers interested in being a Host to receive guests to our cabins. Within the support you will be working directly with Sylvia, the local woman in charge of the cafe and cabins. A great opportunity for cultural exchange working alongside her and the others on the team, often times learning Qeqchi or getting to visit her families home up the mountain from us. The help will be preparing the site to receive guests and occasionally translating the cacao tour and other activities.

Mostly will be support in receiving guests and showing them to their cabins and a tour of the site, as well if possible to translate during different activities offered.

People with interest and experience in permaculture or natural building are welcome to help us make this green space a habitat for biodiversity.
