Sharing your English language skills in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

  Hello Workawayers,
  We are a family living in Ha Long City, and I am looking for volunteers to come and help me out by teaching at our English class. It is a relatively new project, so I am looking for child-friendly, social and outgoing young volunteers to teach English to children ranging from the age of 8 to 14. The English class is very open and easy-going, and we focus mainly on practicing the speaking skills of the children by engaging in conversation with them about various everyday topics, and by expanding their vocabularies and conversational abilities as much as possible. The children speak English already, ranging from a basic understanding in the beginner group to a better grasp of the language in the advanced group.
  You don't have to have any teaching certificates, the only thing we expect is that you are a Native English speaker who likes to spend time with children.
  Volunteers are offered a private room in my house with me and my son, with a shared bathroom, in an apartment building with a stunning view of Ha Long Bay. Meals are provided three times a day, as well as a motorbike.
  In your free time, you can travel around Ha Long City, take a tour of the karsts in the Bay area, or even travel by bus for a weekend trip to Hanoi, Hai Phong, and many more. You will be visiting a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Ha Long Bay offers some truly incomparable views of vast mountain ranges rising up from the sea.
  You are invited to spend as much time as you want with my family in your free time, and we can explore the Vietnamese culture together, and you can enjoy some of the best seafood in Vietnam, straight from the sea.
  Volunteers will be teaching out of English books that are provided by me, so preparation time for the classes is minimal, and teach about one and a half hours on the evenings of weekdays. Total time teaching in the classroom each week amounts to about 10 hours in return for meals and accommodation. We require volunteers to stay for at least one month, but you can stay for as long as you want after that.

  You will be staying in an area of Ha Long where there is a good balance of tourists and local people, so this is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the Vietnamese culture, and to get to know real Vietnamese cooking as well as joining a family who loves to share their experiences and traditions, and would love to learn more about yours. If you want to visit the touristic area where you can meet other backpackers, it's only a 10 minute drive by motorbike. The nature surrounding the apartment is really one of a kind, and you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Bay area straight from our balcony. You are free to travel around every day outside of the class hours.

  Help

  The classes are in the evening, from 19.30' to 21.00'. You don't need any prior experience teaching, and we can help you to get started by offering tips and guidance to teaching the class from both me and previous volunteers, the only thing we require is that you speak English fluently and are able to pass on your knowledge of the language to the children. The lessons aren't done in a formal setting, the main focus is inciting the students to be engaged in the language by making the classes entertaining and fun to be in, so a positive attitude and a smile go a very long way.

  Accommodation

  You will be staying in a private bedroom in my apartment, which is on the 15th floor of a building right next to the sea. Everything is provided, and you share a bathroom with a hot water shower. The apartment is shared with me and my son, and you are welcome to use all facilities such as the kitchen, living room, or anything else you require. Meals are provided three times a day, but you can cook for yourself any time you want.

  Your free time is to be filled in any way that you want, the Bay area offers views that cannot be found anywhere else in the world, and you can book tours by boat to travel around the bay. The city of Ha Long is a vibrant, exciting place, where you can visit many locals sights such as the Sun Wheel, Ha Long Park, the Quang Ninh museum, Bai Tho mountain, the floating market and the fishing village, and many more. You can visit the surrounding area with the motorbike, or if you want to explore further you can always plan trips by bus to surrounding cities such as Hanoi, Hai Phong, or even Sapa.
