    Description

🇬🇧 Join us at our project in the Burgundy region, France, where we bring new life to an historic lock house on the Dijon-Paris cycle route, in the countryside. Our project aims to offer a cozy café, vibrant cultural events and a bike repair station, all while respecting the environment and promoting sustainable lifestyle. This project is associative, and is carried by a collective of about ten people, from the area. Come relax by the water and be part of our community-driven initiative 💧☀

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Volunteers can immerse themselves in a rich cultural exchange. You'll bond with our team and the local community and neighbors. We share skills in bike repairing, gardening, and event management. We look forward to learn from your unique experiences and cultures, making our project a vibrant and inclusive community.

As a volunteer, your tasks may include preparing vegetarian food for shared meals, improving your French by chatting with locals, assisting people organising activities in the community house (concert, yoga, educational and art workshops), taking care of the house (cleaning, decoration out of second-hand materials, repairs), tending to the exterior (gardening, growing vegetables, wood building), bicycling to the local market to get veggies and bread. Also feel free to share your passions by organising various activities (music, sport event, games).
Join us to be part of a vibrant community and gain valuable experiences in a beautiful setting.

Note : Volunteers from Workaway are not working on tasks related to the café. This part of the project is only managed by our French volunteers living nearby.

    Accommodation

We have a dormitory with 6 single bed at the upper floor of the house. On the ground floor, there is a bathroom for volunteer use only. You can also pitch a tent in the garden. There is also a volunteer lounge upstair, where you can work remotely, chill, and have access to DIY and creative material.

Food will be provided, and you'll have to organize between yourselves to prepare (vegetarian) meals.

    ☀ JULY - AUGUST ⛱
You'll be around 5 to 7 volunteers living in the house, in an international environment, plus a member of our team living with you, to guide you everyday in distributing the tasks. We do daily check-ins to see how we're doing, what are your wishes for the day, etc. All volunteers must be able to communicate in English as it's our main communication language.
The minimum stay is a week.

❄ REST OF THE YEAR 🍂
You'll be around 2 to 4 volunteers living in the house (it can be more during collective building weeks). You'll be in touch with one of us for individual check-ins on how you're doing, and answer any question you might have. You'll be able to put energy where you're appealed : construction work, communication, houskeeping, planning activities... We look for volunteers that find joy in doing stuff independently, at their own rythm. Of course, we're always reachable and we come often !
All volunteers must be able to communicate in French as it's our main communication language.
The minimum stay is a month.

    What else ...

During your free time, you'll have plenty of activities to enjoy. You can swim in the Yonne river, bike around in the nature, hike in the nearby Othe Forest, or play sports at the local tennis, ping pong, and volleyball courts.

Joigny, a beautiful medieval city with all essential services, is easily accessible (15' bike). You can reach us by train from Joigny station, which connects to Paris, Dijon, and Lyon. A day trip to Paris is just a 1 hour and 15-minute train ride away. Don't miss the wonderful market in Joigny on Saturday mornings, featuring delicious local specialties.

We are in the countryside, we don't have a car but we have several bikes you can use to join the Joigny city next-by in 15' alongside the river. If you come by train/bus, we'll most likely pick you up with the cargo bike and/or tandem. Being confortable with the use of bikes is important if you wish to move freely around the house !

Regarding our lifestyle and house rules, we eat vegetarian or vegan meals and value ecological sustainability and mutual respect. We strive to create a safe, inclusive, and LGBTQ+ queer friendly space where consent is paramount. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism, and fatphobia are not tolerated here or anywhere else.
