  • Description

Due to current COVID-19 situation we can host only people who already quarantined before the arrival, or doesn't need to quarantine at all.
Please contact us only if you know you will be allowed to enter Norway.

We are two families and a couple - Norwegian, Czech and American - running a historic lodge and establishing a small organic farm together in the beautiful mountains of Hemsedal, Norway. There are 10 of us in total, 6 adults and 3 kids. We are committed to building a more sustainable life -- an ideal that we believe is only possible through good old fashioned hard work, genuine curiosity, and willingness to go outside one's comfort zone every day.

We are looking to meet fellow world travelers who are passionate to learn about organic farming, sustainable food and carpentry (in particular building furniture using reclaimed wood and old logs from our surrounding forest). While deep experience is not necessary, we have found that our Workaway guests who gain the most from their experience bring an abundant curiosity and an eagerness to get their hands dirty and "learn through doing."

We are excited to host a Workaways who are:

    - genuinely interested in learning new things
    - proactively engaging in everyday tasks
    - having a positive and happy attitude
    - humble and appreciative
    - self motivated to take action and effectively complete the tasks

Specifically, we currently need help with:

    - organic farming (weeding, planting, nurturing and harvesting veggies as well as pasture-raising chickens and 4 pigs)
    - carpentry, design & interior renovation work
    - food prep (pickling, preserving, fermenting, kombucha, brewing, etc.)
    - childcare (for children 6 and under)

For winters we are also looking for someone to join us who is interested in grounds and snow management and building custom wood tables and benches.

If you love nature, healthy eating, skiing/snowboarding, hiking, farming, rustic living and friendly company, this is the perfect work-travel opportunity for you. We look forward to sharing this beautiful place and experience with you!

You will gain exposure to people from all over the world during your interaction with guests of the mountain lodge and our family as well.

ALEX is an operations specialist with experience teaching yoga across the world. She will be overseeing sales, customer communications, event management and of course all things yoga. After many hectic years climbing the corporate ladder at a leading European online retail platform; Alex made the conscious decision to return to nature and focus her energy on creating experiences for guests who need to slow down too!
Her partner OLE has had a similar path. Overseeing all our facilities, website and marketing efforts, Ole is passionate about inspiring people to get out of the office and back into nature through his knowledge and experience with philosophy, meditation and yoga. He has many interesting stories from his travels around the world. He certainly has won the children over with his double twist back flip on the trampoline - a move only super talented snowboarders can whip out at a moments notice.

MARTIN is our lead carpenter who joins us every second week while the rest of the time he spends with his family in Oslo. Martin is creative soul that feels great to be around and who far surpasses his peers in terms of creativity, excellence and efficiency. He has been leading big construction project over the last years. Workaways and other members of our team who are interested in carpentry love to work with him since they can learn a lot in a short notice.

BJØRN and DANAE are both tech entrepreneurs, who have grown to appreciate the mental, physical and spiritual importance of returning to nature amidst this increasingly "always-on" tech-enabled world. Passionate about healthy food, simple, toxin-free living and restoring nature to its original form (they just planted 10,000 new trees on the land!), they are dedicated to growing the farm and building the lodge into a wellness destination here in Norway. Both are active in sales and operations, but when not on their computers, you'll find Bjorn hands-on in the field or tinkering away on one of his many outdoor projects, and you'll find Danae practicing new recipes. They have three boys, Tor, Teo & Tomen, aged 5, 2 and 10 months. Tor & Teo both have even more questions than their mother (like "where does the sky come from?") and even more projects than their father (with digging for worms being their favourite).

Danae is originally from California. Alex hails from the Czech Republic, and Bjorn, Ole and Martin are Norwegians.

We all love sharing our stories and experience from life and look forward to learning alongside others to love nature and the outdoors. The mountain lodge itself is under new management so you would get to see the new business reimagined and be a support to those on the property creating the vision for this unique, wellness focused, food and travel destination in Norway.

    UPDATE for Summer 2021:

We are looking for help doing the following:

    1. Organic Farm:
We have initiated an organic farm on 3+ prime acres here on the property last Summer (2020). This spring, summer and fall we will need help with planting, nurturing and harvesting our vegetables, tending to our small flock of chickens and pigs whom we are pasture-raising, and executing a variety of physical farm infrastructure projects (like maintaining hoops and watering systems, building "hegekultur" beds, and more!) While this land has been used for farming for hundreds of years (most recently during WW2 when the Nazis occupied Norway and the three families living here were forced to live off their land), it's been untouched for the last few decades; so we are bringing it back to life! If you have farming experience or an interest in organic farming and food and specifically learning what it takes to build an organic farm from scratch, please do send us a message! In addition to working on the land, the opportunity to harvest and cook/prepare food sourced from the land after our first season will be available as well. This will include pickling, preserving, fermenting, kombucha, brewing, etc. We will also be launching a weekly Farmer's Market this summer - a great opportunity to learn how to plan and launch such such community-building endeavor.

    2. Barn & House Renovations:
We run a large lodge with a number of historic barns and cabins on the property, which have the potential to be beautiful but many require significant work. If you have experience with design and/or construction, or a willingness to learn how to transform a space, we would love to have your help! We are currently clearing out an old barn to transform it into a mixed use space - think summer family farm-to-table dinners, mountain-viewing yoga space, play area for the kids, and more. The windows looking out on the picturesque valley below have been boarded up for years. So much potential! We are also revitalizing our Viking House Cottage to bring a fresh and modern take on the traditional Viking vibe. If you have a interest in building wood furniture - like benches and tables - using reclaimed wood and or logs from the surround forest, painting and interior design, we'd love to have you. We could especially use your help in August, September and October, but may need more throughout the winter as well.

    3. Childcare & Cleaning
Lastly, we are also always looking for help with projects related to our private household such as support with gardening projects, cleaning, laundry and occasional cooking and childcare for our young children while we are working. We often work nights and weekends when there are weddings and events here at the Lodge, and do need child care during these times.

Also Danae gave birth this past September, and she currently needs one Workaway guest dedicated to childcare and cleaning for April, May and June, and possibly August and September.

If you're also interested in joining us during the winter months (projects will be different, but still related to grounds management and maintenance), let us know!

  • Accommodation

The Workawayers would be staying in an apartment suite at the lodge where we all live. Various living arrangements exist, including:

    - Studio apartment suitable for a couple (2 persons), with private sitting area, dining area, kitchen and bathroom.

    - Private bedroom within a larger, 'cabin style' apartment suite with eight bedrooms and bathrooms. You would potentially share the large apartment suite with one or two other workaway travellers, and have access to a communal living room, kitchen, dining room, sauna and deck. It may also be that you have the place entirely to yourself. It is unlikely you would be sharing the large apartment with more than one or two other workaway visitors at any given time.

All Workaway guests will be provided with bed linens and a towel.

All Workaway guests will have unlimited access to our expansive land, nature and the picturesque mountain views of Norway, as well the ability to ski/snowboard at one of Norway's premier ski resorts (Hemsedal Skisenter) during the winter. Hiking, biking and cross country skiing is also available with amazing trails that run on our property and head off for miles into the wilderness.

We also cover basic food. A communal and vegetarian lunch is provided daily. One of us cooks and we eat together. We also have our lodge's restaurant stocked with food for you as well as our farm from which you can harvest fresh veggies to prepare breakfasts and dinners on your own. Workaway guests sharing an apartment can cook dinners together with the food we provide, as their apartments also have a kitchen. Of course, our families will also share other meals with you as well outside the lunches, in particular outdoor BBQ grilling over the Summer months, using produce grown and harvested from our own farm, and meats raised locally (our neighbor raises sheep and we are raising chickens).

    Come join us!

    What else ...

We are located a 15 minute drive away from the closest town, Hemsedal, and our workaway guests would be offered a ride from the host during each trip into town. In town there are various shops, outdoor / ski supply stores, restaurants, a cafe and a grocery store. Steps from the lodge are several mountain trails for biking, hiking, cross country skiing and lake swimming. We are also a 20-minute drive from Hemsedal Skisenter, a destination for skiiers and snowboarders in the 'Scandinavian Alps.'
