Description
We operate a therapeutic horseback riding program for people with a disability. Lessons run May - August. Our program is a fun and rewarding environment if you enjoy people and horses! Horse care experience and/or experience in working with people are an asset for these months. You will be helping the host family with feeding and exercising horses. You will be provided with direction, and we enjoy exchanging knowledge in horse care and horse skills :) We are always interested in how equine owners and caregivers work with their horses in different countries around the world.
We look for help year-round. Duties will include helping with feeding horses, grooming and getting horses out, and small projects.
Fluency in English is required.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Yukon is a vast and beautiful land. Canada's north provides opportunity to see wildlife without driving long distances. Many people from around the world come to the north to see the aurora. We have access to trails and hiking outside our back door. English and french are spoken.

Registered charity
This host is a registered charity in their country and is looking for volunteers to help with their project(s).

Help
In March-May we are looking for Helpers to help and prepare our therapy horses for lessons that start at the end of May.
From end of May-early August we run lessons 3-4 days / week. It's a busy time and you will be doing tasks with 30 other local volunteers and local staff, weekly. Helpers will prepare arena for lessons, and help in lessons as a horse leader or sidewalker, when needed.
During the summer months, Helpers help with lessons and lesson preparation, and general facility maintenance. Projects could include fixing fences, painting, moving hay bales, gardening, cleaning tack, watering plants and looking after a small vegetable garden.
Outside of lesson months projects could include clearing deadfall, piling and burning brush piles, moving hay bales, light construction, general facility maintenance. In these month, Helpers should enjoy time alone, as we only have accommodation for one Helper or for a couple/2 friends. Direction and support is always available.
Winter months are quieter. Duties will be getting horses out when possible, snow clearing and keeping gates clear of snow, and any other projects that the weather allows.
All year around Helpers will prepare buckets and feed horses. Experienced riders will have opportunity to ride, walk and do groundwork with the horses.

Accommodation
Helpers stay in a dry cabin with power ( no running water). You will have access to our house to fill water jugs. We pay for your groceries and you cook for yourself. Limited shower and laundry amenities are provided on site. We have internet access. We are a non-smoking family and ask that helpers respect this.
Our farm is located 25 km from Whitehorse. There is no bus service. We look for helpers who are interested in a peaceful stay and who will enjoy time alone on your time off. We will provide opportunities to see the local sites and trips to town. If you are interested in exploring further or going to town more often, we ask that you plan this outside of your stay with us.
What else ...
There are unlimited trails right off our property. Eclipse Nordic Hotsprings and the Yukon Wildlife Preserve are within 10k away. There is opportunity to see our city for shopping and visiting local tourist sites.
