  • Description

Be an extra helping hand at a small lodge in the heart of British Columbia's famous Cariboo Country. We cater to world visitors who arrive to paddle the famous Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit; visit the Famous Historic 1860's Gold Rush Town of Barkerville and visit the little circa 1930 Artistic Hamlet of Wells BC. Volunteers will find themselves immersed in wildlife, history and art. We are a hard working elderly couple who enjoy quiet evenings and early bedtimes. Being out is the back-country requires workaway volunteers who are fairly self sufficient and able to entertain themselves. We have trails, lakes and a river right outside our door. Single volunteers or couples are welcome. A valid drivers licence is very helpful so that you can head out and explore by yourself, but if you don't have one we can show you around as our work schedule allows. Hike, bike, canoe & kayak right from our front door! Because of where we are situated and the logistics of traveling in and out, we only accept long term work-a-ways who can stay for at least 1 month minimum.

Travellers will learn the ways of a back-country, Cariboo lifestyle. Wilderness living provides peace and solitude. Off grid living provides challenges not common to today's society. The proximity to the lake will provide ample time to learn to kayak and explore the wilderness, yet at the same time our international clients provide a window to the world. We can offer the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in such an environment, a rare wilderness / small community setting to explore and time to enjoy the solitude it offers.

  • Help

Volunteers are needed to help in the home and lodge as our work schedules keep us very busy. Duties can include general maintenance, cleaning, grounds keeping, cooking and helping with our clients. We deal with visitors from all over the world so foreign language speakers are welcome. A valid drivers licence is a bonus allowing volunteers to head out and explore the area on there own...but if you do not have a licence we will work around our schedule to show you around.

Bowron lake is a famous BC canoeing destination rich in history and wildlife. Our chain of lakes provides solitude, wildlife viewing and great photographic opportunities. Twenty miles (32kms) down the road is the Famous historic 1860's town of Barkerville BC which played a major role in the formation of our Province. This museum town offers 125 buildings of cultural and historical value. Another 3 kms from Barkerville is the tiny 1930's gold mining town of Wells BC, Population 350, which now exists as an artistic hamlet filled with galleries, theatre and festivals.

Volunteers can spend time hiking the local mountains, canoeing the lakes and visiting the nearby towns. If you don't have a drivers licence, we will do our best to get you into the towns whenever possible. As we live out in the bush, it is nice to have your own vehicle, but the use of our vehicle can also be arranged. Quesnel, 70 miles (112 km) from Bowron Lake, is the nearest larger center with hospital, banks, grocery and departments stores, liquor etc. Between Quesnel, Wells and Barkerville our summer months are filled with festivals and special events.

We run an eco-friendly business that operates on solar power and self built systems. This provides a unique experience for all who end up at our door. Please note we are off grid meaning there are no electrical lines out here, and we do not have cell phone service. We live quietly in our wilderness home with our pets (cats and dogs); we do have limited access to Internet, telephones and computers through a satellite system, but this makes us dependent on solar and weather conditions. Therefore internet/computer/phone time can be limited. Quiet, outgoing, self sufficient persons who like the solitude of the wilderness would be best suitable to stay with us.
