  • Description

Our foundation is a non-profit organization located in Sumba, a pristine but underprivileged island in eastern Indonesia (NTT province). Our main mission is to drive a sustainable tourism development for the Indonesian island of Sumba by means of empowering local, disadvantaged youth. To achieve this mission, the Foundation manages a full boarding hospitality and permaculture school for underprivileged youth, as well as an exclusive eco-resort (5 bamboo pavilions, 4 deluxe villas, pool and spa).

The school and the eco-resort provide the students with a well-rounded vocational education, focusing on practical and soft skills. We look for people who identify with our core values of education, community empowerment and sustainability. By joining our team, you get a chance to use your professional knowledge to contribute to philanthropic hospitality in an exotic setting. You will teach our Sumbanese students, but you will be amazed at how much you will learn from them and from your colleagues who come from all over the world.

Our project is integrated and all activities are located on one place, which is at the address provided. We call it our campus, and the training facility of our campus is an eco-resort, since we are a hospitality school. So guests stay literally on campus in guest pavilions. The operations of the hospitality school and the hotel (which we gave a different name for marketing reasons) are completely intertwined, so all of our permanent staff work for both. For example, our housekeeping teacher teaches in the school but is also coordinating our students to do the actual housekeeping in the guest pavilions. Our garden workers in the permaculture farm produce food for our students, but also for our guests, etc. When we accept volunteers, they will naturally be involved in both operations because they are not separable.

As a workawayer, you will be involved in a mix of activities that link back to our school, our hotel and our sustainability projects. That is why we look for people with a proven experience in teaching and/or hospitality.

By helping at the foundation you will get to know the Sumbanese culture as no other. Most of our staff are Sumbanese and so are our sixty students. Our students are very eager to learn from 'internationals' as most of them have never left the island. Sumba is on the verge of tourism development and our project is there to make sure the island can have a sustainable development. We accept volunteers and interns from all over the world: we have partnerships with hotel schools in Europe and have had volunteers from nearly all continents. We have a handful of internationals in our permanent staff, the rest are Indonesian (48 staff in total).

Empowering the local community is an inherent goal of the project. By joining our community, you will get to know the Sumbanese culture through our staff and our sixty students. You will benefit as well from the exchange with our other international volunteers/interns who come from all over the world.

A working week is 6 days for most of our staff and for our students. Days start early and end late, because student and hotel life are intertwined. Being an active member of our community means participating in all aspects of our daily life (beit homework tutoring, event organising, ...). On your day off or when you have a free moment, you can head to the beach which is 10min away by bike. We can also help you rent a car or a motorbike to discover more of the pristine beauty of Sumba. There are daily free morning yoga classes on campus.

We are located 20min away from the airport. Three flights come in daily from Bali (the flight from Bali to Tambolaka is 1 hour). We can provide airport pickup.
