    Description

Kia ora! My name is Ange and I’m lucky enough to live in the small coastal settlement of Ngunguru on the beautiful Tutukaka Coast.
Ngunguru sits beside a peaceful estuary with a long sandspit and at low tide you can walk across to Whangaumu Bay. I love ocean swimming and am always happy to guide Workawayers on a local estuary swim if you’re keen to experience the water the way locals do. My home is just a short walk or quick drive from the sea.
I share my home with my very chatty cat, Ziggy Stardust, who is shy at first but likes to be included and sleep on the couch at night.
The house sits within a nursery property that grows sand dune grasses for coastal restoration projects, so the surroundings are quiet and green. At night the sky is full of stars and you can often see the Milky Way. You will hear our native Morepork calling and, if you are lucky, you might even hear kiwi nearby.
Ngunguru is a friendly little community with lots of beautiful walks, bays and beaches to explore. Nearby is Sandy Bay, a popular surf beach. Just five minutes over the hill is Tutukaka Marina with restaurants and cafés, and Ngunguru itself has a small sports complex with a gym, restaurant and café.
Whangārei city is about a 25 minute drive through avocado orchards and farmland.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

I am a Pākehā New Zealander with a good understanding of Te Ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and I am happy to support you to learn more about this if you are interested, or guide you towards further learning while you are here.
Where social activities are happening such as dinners or gatherings with friends, you are very welcome to join. I have a good network of friends locally and am happy to help make connections that support you during your time in Aotearoa.
I lived in London for 12 years and travelled widely during that time. Now that I am home in New Zealand I continue to travel around the Pacific. I really enjoy meeting people from different cultures and sharing my own culture and experiences.

  • Help

    Help

During your stay you will help me maintain my rural property and home. Tasks vary depending on the season and will be adapted to suit what you are comfortable and capable of doing.
The most common task is weeding, so you do need to be able to bend or squat comfortably. If you are confident using tools, there may also be opportunities to use a trimmer.
The weeding helps support the growth of native trees that have been planted and keeps the nursery, where sand dune grasses are grown for restoration projects, free from invasive weeds. We also spread mulch and are working steadily towards the long term goal of reducing weeds as much as possible.

I aim to work alongside you where I can, and I am always happy to share knowledge about the property, the nursery, and the coastal restoration work happening here.

People who enjoy nature, are respectful of shared spaces, and are happy to contribute to a relaxed rural home tend to enjoy their time here the most.

    Accommodation

You will have a double bed in a small room within my home.
I mostly cook vegetarian or vegan meals and I promise they will be tasty as I really enjoy cooking for myself and for others. Occasionally a friend will drop in fresh fish, so we may be lucky enough to have that during your stay. Otherwise I do not eat red meat. If this is something you would prefer, please let me know. You are welcome to prepare it for yourself.
Food for breakfasts and lunches will also be provided.

    What else ...

There is no public transport on the coast other than a limited local passenger service. I can help with transport when needed, for example collecting you from Whangārei, and I am happy to show you around the local area. I can also help you identify activities you might enjoy either here on the coast or in Whangārei.
Within walking distance of the house there are yoga classes, a café, the estuary, and several walking tracks including the walk to the large kauri tree, Tāne Moana.
I do not have WiFi at the house, but you are able to hotspot from my mobile when I am home if needed.
