    Description

Hi. We are located in the “garden of Ireland” in beautiful County Wicklow beside Carrig Mountain and its extensive forests. Our property over 150 acres is truly unique, a real one-off gem with beautiful woodland, parkland, ponds and access to the mountains from the valley. There are lots of walkways through the property, with plenty of wildlife, such as deer, foxes, badgers, pheasants and wild duck. The entire property is a private Nature Reserve.

There is a lovely self-contained unit on site which accommodates our Workaway guests in multiple rooms with central heating, shower and kitchen. There is unlimited WiFi at the property. We are looking for volunteers to assist with the day to day improvements, maintenance and repairs on the Reserve as well as help in the rehabilitation of any animal we may have. Accommodation is provided, together with food, which you will mostly cook for yourself. It is a really special place and offers a tranquil, peaceful and delightful environment. The nearest village, Ashford, is 3km away. The nearest town is Wicklow and Dublin is only approx 30 minutes drive, with a direct bus every few hours each day to the city centre. There is lots to do in Wicklow cultural, sporting, sightseeing and leisure. There are bicycles for you to enjoy and fishing off the Wicklow coast, with the tourist attractions of nearby in Glendalough, Laragh, Roundwood and Wicklow Mountains National Park.

Help and assistance is required in the nature reserve with a variety of duties, undergrowth clearance, replanting of trees, wild bulbs, looking after reserve projects, building or making paths, walls, ditches, bridges, cleaning out bat boxes, bird boxes, ponds, pruning and sculpting trees, harvesting wild fruits, building pens and fences, maintenance, woods, parkland flora and fauna and collecting data on birds and wildlife. We also take in orphaned and injured wildlife, care for them and when ready, release them back into the wild. We never know who or what will be visiting us!

If this exchange position is of any interest to you please email us with your details and any queries you might have. We are very flexible in relation to your choice of volunteer days and we will advise and help you in your travel and sightseeing plans while you are with us. Don't forget to clearly outline your requested arrival and departure dates. We look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for reading!

    Best wishes.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

I’ll work alongside you to provide guidance, training, and insight into the daily rhythm of life on the reserve. I’m happy to answer questions, share knowledge about local ecosystems, and make sure you feel welcome and supported. We have regular chats
to go over tasks and make sure you’re comfortable with the work and your surroundings. We always aim to have everyone as comfortable as possible. We also make time for casual conversations so we can get to know each other as people. We want this to be an experience where you feel valued, safe, and free to explore your own connection to nature.

We find that every volunteer brings something unique—whether it’s a new idea, a different way of working, or stories from another corner of the world. We love to learn about your background, skills, and outlook on conservation, your ideas etc. We do our best to make every volunteers stay memorable, comfortable, interesting and educational. By hosting we would hope that we inspire a deeper connection to nature and foster environmental responsibility. It would be our deepest hope and wish that some of our volunteers become strong advocates for conservation in their own life and communities going forward.

  • Help

    Help

We are hoping to meet and share the beauty and purpose of the nature reserve with passionate and environmentally conscious volunteers. Your help will directly support ongoing conservation work such as habitat restoration, trail maintenance, reserve maintenance, and wildlife care. Your help will contribute directly to the health and sustainability of the reserve. We are also an animal sanctuary so will get to see rare birds and animals which we care for and then release back into the wild. In the past we have had pine martins, owls, It can be very varied as to what animals and birds we have and on occasions we may have none at all. In return, we hope to offer a meaningful and educational experience in a peaceful natural setting. Volunteering here is not just about lending a helping hand—it’s about being part of a mission to protect and preserve biodiversity. We plant lots of trees! We are also excited about the cultural exchange and the fresh perspectives and ideas that volunteers bring to this work.
