Description
We are a small rural residential hobby-farm-like property in rural Metchosin - about 35 minutes outside of Victoria (the capital of British Columbia). Your main hosts on the property are Dave and Teresa, thier 2 dogs and 2 cats as well as Teresa’s parents, Pres and Patricia. Patricia cares for her husband Pres who lives with dementia. There is also another family of 4 that live on the property in a seperate unit.
We have just under two acres of land that is a 5-minute walk to the ocean, forest trails, sandy beaches and a lagoon. There is beautiful wildlife all around us. We live on a bus line so friends visiting can still make day trips to the city when desired.
Our property needs constant love and care and there are many projects on the go. We have gardens with perennials as well as medicinal plants. We have two orchards with apple, plum, cherry and pear trees. We have blueberries, fig trees, raspberries and always looking to add more. We have chickens for eggs and we raise rabbit for meat. All of the work we do is personal; we don't run a business.
Our land is an evolving vision and the help we need is mainly landscaping and garden activities of all sorts (helping design spaces, weed pulling, dirt hauling), garden tending, seed planting, and helping our land regenerate and grow with abundance of love and creativity. There are many different chores and activities to participate in. There is also help needed inside the house with housecleaning and general maintenance.Types of help and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
English speaking in the household but love to learn about other cultures and customs. We live intergenerationally and can offer an experience of living close with nature with lots of opportunity for hiking and walking in the local natural spaces. The animals are so happy to have guests and love to go on walks with our visiting workawayers. Seasonally we can offer experience working in the garden and the fruit orchards, learning about tree pruning, planting, medicinal plants, composting, landscaping and small construction projects.
We have lots of knowledge of connecting with the natural world, outdoor skills, counselling and personal connection in the forest, somatic practices, making some food from scratch, medicinal plants, growing vegetables, permaculture, renewable energy. We also have skills in fibre arts and lots of crafting and working with natural elements.
Our 30yr old nephew also currently is living with us and he is a chef and has lots of offer in knowledge of food prep.Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Help
We need help with all kinds of tasks - small building and maintenance projects, general exterior upkeep, some interior cleaning. Lawn mowing, weed pulling, garden tending, vegetable planting, weed suppression, watering, fruit picking, land tending, food preserving, and beautifying our land, gardens and homes. Pres is an Elder living with Alzeimers and Patricia would love to host someone who could help her with sorting and house keeping as well as companionship to Pres. This could include playing games and going for walks. There is lots to learn always and being interested in gardening, permaculture and medicinal plants, mushroom growing, medicines and producing food will be the main activities. We also make medicinal tinctures, body salves and we're learning new things everyday!

We offer a private single bedroom with a bed, desk, shelves and closet. The bedroom is in the main part of the house, with a bathroom next to it. This bedroom is located upstairs, where you will stay with Dave and Teresa, a couple late 40s/ early 50s. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats that are all inside/outside animals. Our house is connected to our parents, Pres and Patricia (in their 80s) suite that we live with and share meals and activities occasionally. We will cook most meals and it would be great to share some meal cooking.
What else ...
We live in rural Metchosin - a small little farming community about 35 minutes from the main city of Victoria. We are right on the bus route that connects to all major bus lines. We are 5 minutes from a large forested park called Witty's Lagoon that is connected to the ocean. There are beaches, a waterfall and lots of trails for hiking and running.
We live with another family that lives on the ground level - the couple is in their 40s and they have two kids age 11 and 9.A little more information
