Min stay requested: at least a week

  • Description

Carpentry, watering gardens, weeding, cutting the lawns, and cleaning. We are situated on 10 Acres within town, on bus route, and a mere 5 min drive/35min walking distance to town, sand beach on Shuswap Lake, (local bus or bike will get you there), and trails that are all around us.

Salmon Arm is a small town on Shuswap Lake in central British Columbia; half way between Vancouver and Calgary, about 4 hours from Banff. Although only minutes from town, we are in a peaceful rural area surrounded by forests and many hiking trails.

We are seeking independent and enthusiastic workers ~ Let us know your skills and we will do our best to put them to good use!

GARDENING ~ weeding and watering vegetable garden and the flower gardens. Also a large lawn that needs cutting every week.

CLEANING - in the process of finishing off a 2nd residence on the property that needs a thorough cleaning, then the finishing will begin!

DECK - literally falling apart, so if you have the skills, we have the work to enjoy!

If you have carpentry and renovation experience, please let us know, as there are additional endless projects, renovations, plumbing, painting, drywall, etc. There is a 2nd residence on the property that needs completing ~ drywall, painting, bathroom needs toilet, sink and shower installed. The kitchen has an old cabinet but once I find a new/used set, they will be installed along with countertops and sink. Once completed....workers will have a new place of their own to stay or, can stay there once bathroom is set up. Please indicate your detailed carpentry skills and experiences if this type of work interested you.

We are just minutes from town - yet in the country and a 5 minute drive to a sandy beach, or catch the local bus. Walking to the beach may take up to an hour or so. Having your own car would be a great asset to you, but not a necessity.

We are within walking distance to the recreation centre where you will find an indoor pool, hot tub, and exercise room/gym. Also within walking distance is bowling, golf and town.

LOTS of trails on our street for walking, hiking, and mountain biking trails that go forever. Easy forested walking trails across the street and all the way to downtown.

Potential to have your own kitchen/cooking facilities should you prefer to enjoy your own creative meals. May be the ideal place for those wanting time to themselves, or someone travelling solo that does not mind their 'alone time'. Your choice! Ideally you would love to work independently in the mornings and explore all the surrounding trails, lakes, and towns, in the afternoons. At times we are around a lot, other times busy with work so less available for workers although, someone always around. Others staying here love hiking, mountain biking, and exploring.

If you have a car, you can easily explore nearby towns of...Sicamous, Enderby, Sorrento, Blind Bay, all within 20 minutes or, venture a little further to Chase, Armstrong, and Vernon all within 40 min. or in an hour or so go to Falkland Revelstoke Kelowna and Kamloops. So much to see and do ~ Especially if you have your own vehicle although, when not working we are always out and about and you are most welcome to join.

We are within walking distance to the local bus services.
Current update as of June 2019: Accommodation will be your own small space with a sofa that folds out for a very comfortable bed. If there are two of you and you prefer your own bed... a clean single bed mattress will fit on the floor alongside the fold out sofa. Accommodation is tight BUT.....everything very clean!! Next to your room is a fully-equipped kitchen available. Meals with us when we are not swamped with work then you would do your own breakfast and lunch (everything supplied) and share dinners with us. If you prefer to cook for yourselves and be on your own to explore during time off - everything flexible here. This can, and will, change from time to time so be sure to ask all the questions you want.

We do not have any farm animals here; just a cat.

Helpers are responsible for their own gloves, sunhat, bug spray, sunscreen.= if you feel you need it.

Depending on the season I would be happy to teach you about canning, drying, making bread, and pickles. I can give you a few beginner dance steps as I was a dance instructor.
Salmon Arm is a small community with lots going on in the summer.
~ Music downtown every Thursday, Friday and Saturday (and in nearby communities)
~ WOW is music every Wednesday at the Wharf (sit on the grass, dance from 7-9)
~ Tues is Cheap movie nights $5-
~ Thursday is Karaoke night with free pool at the Grindrod pub
~ Roots and Blues Music Festival in August
    ~ Pow Wow's Skw'lax Pow Wow in Chase (40 min) July 19-21
    and in Kamloops Aug 2 - 4th
    ~ and more!

There is a bike available for you to ride (to town it is all downhill through trails, then a bus up is best, lol) explore trails or hike forever starting right from our home. Shuswap Trail Alliance has a website ( with maps of many surrounding trails. There are also community organized walking, hiking, and biking groups (mountain biking) Salmon Arm and surrounding areas also have weekly Farmers Markets, and various festivals nearby (Pow-Wow's in July, Roots and Blues Music Festival in August - just do some searching of Salmon Arm activities)
We are 40 min walk to town or 5 min bus or car ride and I don't mind dropping you off in town or at the beach.

    Two types of stays here:
    1) Host is around full-time and available for fun, guidance, conversation and to drive you to beach or take you along when attending local events. Normal type of workaway place.
    2) Host is crazy busy with work and less available therefore you would spend a bit more time on your own to explore and work, or share time with others here. Ideal for some, not for others.
This changes from week to week therefore, I will give you a real clear idea of what to expect to ensure you are happy here when you make contact with us.
Thus far, this year - everyone has been pleased and enjoyed their stays and we have had lots of fun and workers have learned a lot. There have been no fires yet! I like to be really honest and paint a clear picture, so we will converse via email or phone to give you a good idea what is going on here before you come.

If it is a busy work season here for us, this place will suit those with or without a vehicle that are okay working and cooking on their own, and taking off in the afternoons for some fun. We are on the bus route, and have a bike as well. There are others in the house willing to drive as well. We have had workers that want interaction, and hosts to spend time with them all day long - we do provide that, but . . . . may not be able to if work picks up this summer therefore, for those wanting independent time, take care of themselves and have a lovely place to work and stay - you might want to consider this, or at least write with your questions. There are others here in the house you may end up spending time and exploring with, just not us hosts. Our current workers have had 'on their own' and 'alone' times, and other times we had lots of interaction and fun. It has been a nice variety for them and I was able to take them to Vancouver Island to explore.

  • Help

Help is required indoors and outdoors ~
GARDEN: weeding, watering, and planting, harvesting and preserving (canning, drying, freezing)

CARPENTRY: as above - deck repairs/replacing, 2nd residence is at lock up stage, needs finishing

AROUND THE YARD: Chopping down burdock bushes, falling trees, chopping & stacking firewood, gathering wood around property, cutting lawns, building chicken run, digging, outside house drain

Let us know if you prefer to help within a strict schedule or, if you are okay with helping some days longer and others shorter. We would also like to know what your hobbies are, what kind of tasks you like to do, and what your strengths are.

Do you prefer to work on your own independently, or do you like to work with others?
What activities or areas would you like to explore during your time off.

Knowing a bit about you, helps us to plan the type of tasks that would best suit you. Please let us know as much as you can about your skills and past experiences.

  • Accommodation

Volunteers have a quiet room with access to bathroom/shower within our home or, if you prefer to camp - feel free! There is a large carport to set up your tent (or ours) and we can provide a proper, very clean single bed mattresses (or bed) with table, chair and lamp. You will have access to a semi-private kitchen and living room separate from ours, if you like or, should you wish to make a cup of tea/coffee or cook on your own or have some down time.
Otherwise, feel free to spend time with us upstairs in the main living area of our home.

Our home is secluded with endless hiking trails within walking distance, and backs onto an 18 hole golf course if you golf or, want a late evening gorgeous walk. We are not far from the Recreational Centre that includes a gym, hot tub, and swimming pool. There are many lovely sandy beaches in and surrounding this town.
The closest beach (Canoe Beach) is a short bus ride from here, a 40 min. bike ride, or a good walk 1.5 hrs maybe.. So many areas to explore in the summer.

Food is primarily vegetarian although, should you wish to purchase your own meat to cook or BBQ, feel free. Generally, I stock food separate for you to help yourself to whenever you want. Let us know what you like, and what you don't........ Otherwise basic foods including cereal, porridge, eggs, bread, rice, pasta and sauces, perogies, frozen pizza, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, turnip, potatoes, peas, corn, etc as well as apples, oranges, bananas. (lots in the garden too) You can buy your own specialty foods you need or prefer, as well as treats, as these are not provided.
You will prepare your own food most of the time when I am working. Otherwise, I often have soups, salads, sandwiches for lunch either together or, you can make what you feel like.

If you want to buy and cook for yourself completely, let me know and we can discuss less working hours per day, otherwise, I am happy to provide the food for you to cook and we will share dinners together when it works for us.
