Hi! We’re Layla and Sheldon, a hardworking, caring, and adventurous couple from Quebec, Canada, excited to experience new places, meet new people, and learn different ways of life through Workaway.
Sheldon is a skilled tradesman with 7 years of experience working in blasting and construction. He’s incredibly handy, practical, and the kind of person who can fix just about anything- I never bring my car to the mechanic because Sheldon handles it himself. He has extensive experience with heavy equipment, construction work, problem-solving, and hands-on projects, making him a huge asset for any physically demanding or maintenance-related tasks.
I recently completed my Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources in Montreal. Throughout university, I worked as a substitute teacher and online tutor, which helped me develop strong communication skills, adaptability, patience, and a love of working with people of all ages.
Together, we’re social, dependable, and not afraid of hard work. We’re fluent in both English and French and always excited to learn a new language. In addition, we love being active and outdoors. Food is also a big passion for us. We love cooking, discovering new cuisines, and learning how food connects to culture (though Quebec poutine still has a special place in our hearts).
As a couple, we’re looking for a meaningful cultural exchange, honest work, great conversations, and memorable experiences. Whether it’s helping with construction, maintenance, gardening, hospitality, cooking, animal care, childcare, or simply lending a hand wherever needed, we’d love to contribute.

Sheldon has 7 years of experience in blasting and construction, he's skilled with tools, repairs, maintenance, mechanics, and physically demanding work. He is experienced working in tough environments, following safety procedures, and getting the job done efficiently. I bring strong communication, teaching, and organizational skills through my experience as a substitute teacher, online tutor, hospitality work, and completing a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources. I am comfortable working with children, helping with guest-facing roles, organizing tasks, teaching/tutoring, cooking, cleaning, and adapting quickly to new environments. I'd love to learn the guitar so if anyone is open to teaching me, it would be greatly appreciated! We both love any kind of sport, and being from Lac-Saint-Jean, we love the water. Food and music are two things that connects us. It's important for us to be open-minded to new foods, music and culture. Sheldon is incredibly hands-on and loves understanding how things work, building, fixing, and solving problems. We also value family, good conversation, shared meals, and simple moments that make travel meaningful. Excited to meet you!

Different skills that came in very handy
There were lots of laughs and we were really sorry to see them leave to soon.

Words simply cannot express my gratitude, for all the exceptional work Layla and Sheldon accomplished while here. Both are honest and conscientious workers, and paid close attention to detail. Sheldon tidied … read more up, and organized around the perimeter of the barn. When completed the difference was amazing as he has a good eye for detail and works exceptionally well on his own. No need to be checking up on him, he is a hard dedicated worker. He also did some mudding and sanding of drywall in the suite area of the workshop/garage and assisted another helper, Marc, with replacing damaged drywall in the main house. Once repairs were done, Sheldon took on the task of filling in the spaces and preparing the room for painting. This was his first attempt of painting a room so I must admit I was a little nervous but.....WOW, he did an outstanding job! Thank you so very much, Sheldon!
Layla loves to turn an eyesore of an area into something lovely. There is a pathway on a slope from the upper area of the property, sloping down to the lower yard. When Layla was finished she had created a lovely cobblestone edging all along the path, pulled weeds, and after raking it, had transformed it from a scruffy little path into an attractive walkway. Whatever Layla did, her organizational skills were outstanding. Whether it was tidying up around the greenhouse, or tackling the hundreds of pots, and bedding plant trays alongside the workshop; she worked hard and diligently, paying attention to detail. Layla was not a clock-watcher, as it was important to her that when she finished for the day, everything was left tidy, tools put away, and sincerely wanted to complete the goal she had set for herself come the end of the day. Layla also worked alongside of Sheldon assisting with mudding and sanding drywall, and helped with plants. Layla noticed when watering was needed and ensured that the automatic sprinting system was set up to ensure everything got wet. So appreciative of all you accomplished, thank you Layla.
What I found impressive was that, as a couple, they worked well together, with others, but also had no problem working separately and on their own. They were flexible, cheerful, and an absolute pleasure to have as part of the Team of Five, that were here during their 3 week stay.

Sheldon and Layla spent their time off exploring the area, especially the beach, as it was so hot when they were here, and Enderby's river waterslide. As a group, we all made a trip to Margret Falls, an easy lovely walk winding alongside the river through a beautiful old growth forest.

I am sure the highlight of their stay here in Salmon Arm, was taking part in the world-class Roots and Blues Music Festival the 3rd weekend of July. As volunteers at the festival, they earned free weekend passes, a souvenir volunteer t-shirt, were fed well, and enjoyed the volunteer-only 'after party' from midnight to 3am Sunday evening.

So blessed to have been gifted with having these two stay here. Wishing them all the best and hope they pop back in for a visit and always welcome to come and stay as guests should they be passing through this way again. A cheerful, positive, fun couple you will most certainly be grateful to have them. Enjoy you travels! Thank you both, so much!!
