We are a food bank charity and kindness initiative based in London. We cook 2000 free hot meals a day, feeding homeless, immigrants, families, students... all and everyone is welcome. Our hope is not just to feed hungry bellies, but to inspire kindness in others. The charity has been running for 30 years by a dedicated team of volunteers.

Help in the house
You will have the opportunity to participate in a truly meaningful project. Each week you will help to feed 5000 - 10,000 people with a sumptuous, free meal - not just helping those who might be struggling, but demonstrating human goodness and generosity, inspiring people to think differently. You will be doing something good and making a difference in the world.
Most of the help needed is in preparing food each morning. That includes chopping veg, stirring the big pot, baking cakes, frying poppadoms, cleaning and tidying... normal kitchen life, but on a much bigger scale.
We don't typically need help serving food, but we will make sure that you get a chance to go out at some point during your trip. Please note that we start early each morning. Your working times will be 7am -12pm, Monday to Friday, so if getting up early is difficult for you then we are likely not the best place for you.
Our team is very welcoming and easy going. We want people to feel very happy here and I am sure that you will!
This is a list of tasks that will be performed each morning:
Cleaning previous days food containers.
Collecting from local shops with bike and trailer.
Unloading produce from the van for storage.
Chopping vegetables for the next days cook.
Mixing dough and baking cakes.
Stirring the large pot.
Emptying the large pot into containers.
Cleaning the large pot.
Preparing the pot for next days cook.
Loading the containers into the van and rickshaws.
Cleaning work spaces.
Accommodation is a basic, small, cosy, mixed, dorm with bunk beds.
In terms of food, you are welcome to enjoy the meals we make each day, and to help yourself to whatever food we have onsite to make your own meals (there is always A LOT of food!). Please note that we are strictly vegetarian only on-site, so please don't bring meat, fish or eggs into the building.
There is no wi-fi onsite, but there is a library less than 5 minutes walk away with free wi-fi, as well as countless coffee shops, food outlets with wi-fi etc. We would like a community feel here, with more human interaction and less staring at screens. :)
Our philosophy is that everyone on the team is equal. There is no manager, no hierarchy, no authority telling you what to do and what not to do. You will be supported and encouraged to think for yourself, take responsibility, and use your initiative and intelligence. If you have an idea then do it! If you want to make an improvement then make it! But if you don't want to use your brain and to take responsibility then this is not a good place to come to.
We have a simple system whereby the more experienced Workaway team members teach the new ones what needs to be done, and so it goes on. This is not hard! If you don't know what to do then ask another Workawayer. After a few days you will soon see what needs to be done, so just do it! We believe that this way we get the best out of you and you have a richer and more fulfilling experience here because you are treat like an intelligent adult not a dumb child who needs to be told what to do! If you want to take a break then take one! If you want to get a drink then get one!
All we ask is that you think about your team mates... Start work together at the same time and finish together at the same time. If someone needs help then help them. Don't leave your team mates struggling with a tough job. Communicate between yourselves. Organise yourselves. You are free and you are intelligent so use it to have the best experience possible and to leave the project better than when you arrived. Thank you! :)
We will give priority to applicants looking for longer term stays. Please bring a sleeping bag and towel. We will provide a pillow and bedding. We are located in some rooms at the back of an underground car-park, so be prepared for an odd location! However, inside is nice enough.
We are based in the City of London, about 5 minutes walk from St, Paul's Cathedral. London is London... you will always find something to do, and here you will be right in the middle. Each day you will be finished by mid-day, so you will have more than enough time to go explore the city.
Please do not consume meat / fish / eggs, alcohol or drugs on-site. You are free to smoke outside of our premises at the main gates.
If you know that you are a loud snorer then it is best not to apply since the accommodation is dorms and it is important that everyone gets good rest. It is a good idea to bring ear plugs and an eye mask.
To repeat... we are in an odd location, and there is nothing fancy here, so don't be shocked when you turn up and see what we are! But I can almost 100% guarantee that you will have an amazing time with us. We are a small team of full-time volunteers dedicated to doing good in the world. You will love it.
We have two cats here for those with allergies.
