We are a small family-run business in the beautiful Isle of Skye. A lot of our team are local to the island and we have lots of insider knowledge to share. We can even help with gaelic! And if you are keen to learn to sail, Jasper is always delighted to share his passion.

    Help

We are seeking a passionate gardener to help us as we take on the running of a garden centre in the ground of our house.

We need help with the day to day management of the garden centre, which is open from March until October; and for 7-10 days at the beginning of December to sell Christmas Trees. April, May and June are very busy: thereafter it gradually quietens down, and from mid-September is only open three days a week. Alongside this, we would like someone to manage the maintenance and development the garden around the House. From late June onwards, time would be available for development of the gardens. In particular, we are looking for someone with a passion for gardening and extensive knowledge of plants.

The management of the garden centre would include keeping it clean, tidy and weed free; organising and carrying out maintenance of the stands, tunnel, watering systems, cabin etc. Ensuring good plant care (watering, feeding, deadheading, fleecing as needed); and displaying plants and products to their best advantage. Also organising staff rotas, keeping records of staff hours for payroll and supervising and directing staff in their daily work.

Other responsibilities will include cashing up and reconciling the till at the end of the day; responding to customer enquiries (phone, email, web enquiries, Facebook and Instagram) and following up customer requests by sourcing plants for them or giving advice and recommendations.

Your assistance will also be needed with ordering bedding, herbaceous perennials, shrubs, vegetables, herbs etc.; rhododendrons, roses, trees, bushes, autumn and spring bulbs, seed potatoes, Christmas trees; and also pots, ornaments, garden furniture, compost, tools, trellis, plant foods, pesticides/fungicides, seeds, and barrels.

Our garden is very much a Spring garden. We have colour in May and into June from the bluebells, rhododendrons and azaleas: thereafter, there is very little colour. Over time, we would like to create herbaceous border areas and plant more shrubs etc. that will give colour throughout summer and into Autumn. We would also like to resurrect the roses around the cottage and rear of the main house, and to erect trellises with climbers again around the cottage. Eventually, we would like to have a cutting garden for flowers in the hotel. This is a real opportunity for someone with a passion for gardening to drive the development of a country house garden, with a great deal of creative autonomy.

This could suit a couple if one of you is happy to juggle summer work in the hotel (and some garden work too, perhaps) with some gardening hours through the winter. Both roles are paid - salary depending on experience. This also a good fit for keen travellers as, given the seasonal nature of the work, there is scope for a good period of time off during the winter for travel.
