    Description

We are currently looking for Hospitality help starting beginning to mid April for a 3 month stay.

This is a historic hotel, campground, and RV park located just outside Moab, Utah. We, Bridget and JR, purchased the 11 acre property in 2020 and have been turning it into an artistic haven in the desert. We previously both built stages and art installations at music festivals around the country, and are excited to be bringing these skills to our property with the help of our friends and anyone else interested!

This place is located in an old Utah ghost town called Thompson Springs, which currently has 60 permanent residents. The town is located in the Bookcliffs 36 miles North of Moab in between the Green and Colorado Rivers. We purchased the 11-acre property in 2020 and have been renovating it into an art infused getaway in the desert. There are usually about 8-10 staff members living on site in individual campers. We also own and operate a campground/retreat/music venue just outside of Moab in the Red Rock cliffs called Critter Canyon. We would love to have hospitality help for the hotel/campground and Critter Canyon.

We are closely located to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks surrounded by insanely beautiful desert landscapes. Outside of renovating the place we also work to produce and perform at events and go on desert adventures like hiking, rafting, canyoneering, skydiving, and dirt biking. This is a great place if you like to be in social situations, meet creative types, and go do fun outdoor activities!

We are animal friendly. If you have a pet you want to bring we are very accommodating. All we ask is that you keep dogs on a leash at all times, and any pet must get along with other animals.

We have guests visit from all over the world, and in helping with hospitality you could interact with visitors, most of whom are interested in an active outdoor lifestyle. We have lots to teach when it comes to construction/carpentry work around the property.

JR is the chairman of the waterboard in town. If you are interested about water systems in the desert, we could have many long chats about this precious resource!

Bridget is a painter and licensed tattoo artist and we have an arts and crafts studio for anyone interested. We have a fitness pole, space for group yoga, and often have friends into aerial arts come set up their silks and lyra. Bridget also has an interest in herbalism and likes to make tinctures and salves. In August we love to go up to the high elevation mountains to forage for edible mushrooms and herbs.

JR has thrown music festivals in this area for over a decade. We have an amazing group of friends in the area who continue to throw concerts here in the desert. If you came here and were interested, we could take you to some of these events. Our friends come over often for concerts, arts and crafts nights, ect, so you would have lots of opportunities to meet interesting people.

We are located by both the Colorado and Green Rivers, and love to go rafting. We have boats on the property and experienced captains to take you out on the water. You could do a mild day trip, or a multi-day excursion on some of the biggest rapids in North America! We also have dirtbikes and ATV's to explore the surrounding areas.

  • Help

    Help

Hospitality help is a high priority for us. At this place we have 6 hotel rooms, 10 campsites, and 10 RV spaces. At Critter Canyon we have campsites and host retreats and events. The hospitality job would consist of answering the phones, cleaning the rooms, making reservations, and answering any questions guests may have. We typically have 3-4 people that work our hospitality shifts. We would need someone who is fluent in English and has basic computer skills for this paid position. Previous experience is not required, but we would want someone who likes to interact with people and has a positive attitude! We would prefer to host longer stays around 3 months, but can work with you if it seems like a proper fit!

We are often working on projects around the property, with general maintenance, sometimes fixing up old RV/Campers, to building sculptures, ect. Both owners of the property build stages and art installations, so everything we do has a fun artistic element to it. Construction knowledge isn't required to help with all these projects but would be put to good use!

We are garden growing, and love having help with gardening expertise!

JR owns a 3D concrete printer and one of our future projects will be building a garage for it and then printing homes with it.

We would like to have 20-25 hours of help per week. We will be providing free accommodation and paying at least the minimum wage up to $20 an hour depending on the project. As with all exchanges, hosts and helpers need to ensure that they have the correct visa and work permit as required and insurance. We would most likely be hosting 2-4 Workaway guests at a time in addition to our permanent staff. Our busy season for hospitality is September & October, and March-June. We would prefer a 3-6 month stay for hospitality work and a minimum 3 months for construction/maintenance.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We have renovated campers on the property that would be available to stay in. You would not have to share with any other staff or guests. All the trailers/glamp tents have electricity, fridges, and hot plates in them. There is a shared bathhouse and kitchen to use. We cook together as a community somewhat often, but it would not be a regularly scheduled thing. This is a paid position so you would need to do your own food shopping. There are grocery stores in Green River (30 minute drive and small store), Moab (45 minute drive large stores), and in Grand Junction (65 minute drive largest stores). There is a 7-11 gas station a mile away that sells sandwiches, salads, pizza, beer, and other snacks, but that is the only other business in this ghost town. You will need to have your own vehicle as unfortunately there is no public transportation to the nearby towns. Moab and Grand Junction have airports. Green River and Grand Junction have Amtrack Train and Greyhound Bus Stations.

We are located at the base of the Bookcliff mountains, and there are stunning Native American pictographs and petroglyphs up the canyon 4 miles from the property. There are also remnants of an old coal mining village in the same canyon.

  • What else ...

The hotel and the surrounding area is truly epic for those who love the outdoors. There are more hikes than you could experience in a lifetime, and the vastness of the desert will capture your heart. We are at 5,200 ft in a desert climate and it can get hot in the summer and cold in the winter.

We are a fun loving group of outlaws who love to play in nature, have dance parties, create art, and generally just have a good time. Although we throw many events and parties, we are not looking for people who overdo it. We have many guests on the property at all times, so it is important to be respectful of others and follow the quiet hours, which are from 9pm - 9am. It is easy to keep your personal space here, but if you are an extreme introvert looking for solitude, this might not be the property for you. There will be lots of interaction with guests and other people living here, and most of us are silly, hardworking artists. If this sounds like the right fit for you, please reach out so we can get to know each other a little better!
