    Description

Dear friends and helpers of workaway,

There is always work in our agriculture and gardening, but we also seek help on our indoor and outdoor construction sites. Masons, carpenters, glaziers, Flaschner, plasterers, roofers ... You are all welcome. :-) Our community is open to new people and we can also imagine long-term agreements that go beyond guest status.

The cooperative is a working and living community in which 14 adults, 4 children and numerous guests live, who hunt and pursue numerous projects. In our village university, young people study away from the traditional and recognized as useless educational pathways, currently pedagogy and design. We do not practice our agriculture commercially, but in the belief that the care of the earth is simply a healthy organism. The money for the realization of our projects we earn in our companies printing, carpentry, publishing house, sales for ecological products, caretaker, translation agency u.a.
The areas of interest of the individual people here are widely scattered, and humans can learn everything possible and impossible with us: buttering, making films, working with the Camera Obscura, creating language, bookbinding, making beehives, carpentry ... and many other exciting things.

On our pages on the internet you will find more detailed information:

Of course, a visit to us is more impressive than reading our internet pages. Cordial invitation!

Herzliche Einladung!

    What else to say:

    Community life

The cooperative has been based in Dürnau for more than forty years. Even before we moved from Wuppertal to Upper Swabia, we called ourselves cooperatives, always attached importance to the meaning of the words, which put common procedures in the foreground, but not commonalities in the way we live, and we had to reject a common doctrine early and in many cases.
This was not common in the 1970s. At that time, communities were mainly known and known as shared apartments, in a factual field, for religious reasons or in the pursuit of a common political or similar view. Apparently there was no need to work together, supported solely by the idea of working together, was new and, as a matter of course, subject to critical consideration and various interpretations and speculations.
Further movements and communities then emerged from that alternative scene, which today seems forgotten and, despite its considerable size, seems historically and obliterated. These communities, some of which can still be found today, are mainly related to certain tasks or purposes and goals of being together.

After the surprising events of 2020, some people apparently had reason to ponder their living conditions. Due to various measures, there could not be an increased number of visitor requests to the cooperative. However, inquiries have changed in this time period: fewer travelers, tourists interested, more search for perspective. This text is primarily intended for such visitors.

Anyone who comes to Dürnau will not only notice the cooperative because there are pioneering signs. At the central intersection is the dining house on one side and our shop with telephone exchange on the other. And in contrast to the surrounding villages, people are also visible during the day, plus children and cyclists.
If you are looking for the cooperative, this is the place for you.
It is not easy for our guests to find their way. There are many people, many names, some houses, a few companies and places of work, which is still an important bond of our common ground. It usually takes days for guests to find their way around and experience the places where it all happens. Then we also get to know those who have other questions. This is exciting for everyone when questions arise. Of course, some guests want to know why we don't change our clocks, why we eat on time and just at 6:00 p.m., where all the people are during the day, how it all started, and who actually started living together. We are also asked about anthroposophy, what we think about art, what the village university is for, and what we think about this and that. We are also pleased about such questions and, if possible, we will also discuss them with the guests.

Sometimes people forget that not only questions are brought along. We appreciate the wealth of experience of our guests, we benefit from it in a variety of ways and are often happy to hear stories from the city and the wide world here in the village. If you visit such a strange place as the cooperative in Dürnau, all sorts of experiences could add to the previous ones. However, experiences are usually not only collected and accumulated in the memory as a place of storage, but also categorized. It is just as natural to want to classify new experiences in the existing categories.
    That can go wrong.
A long list could now follow, starting with the remark that we are not an "institution", across all categories until we all do not want the same thing, regulate our affairs ourselves, without a plenary session but in agreement. It could be mentioned that there is no constitution, no set of rules and no house rules, but that we certainly appreciate good behavior and that the following applies: what is allowed is allowed.
    And what do we like?
Of course, the focus is also on us, but in order not to pile up platitudes, we stick to what interests us. In the people of the cooperative, the extraordinary is liked, perception and attention are valued, but no less thoughtfulness and, if it is such, also art. We like manual workers as much as others, appreciate helpfulness and are happy to support meaningful projects.
We generally also like our guests and want to help with this little idea that our dear guests also like us.

    Leben in Gemeinschaft

    Und was gefällt uns?

    This year

Our experiences from the last years have given us the impression that more and more people who register are predomininatly interested in tourism. We are not the right place for such people. We would like to have a learning and working atmosphere in which we can share a lively exchange with our interested guests.
With this premise, after a two-year break, we are continuing the twelve-year tradition of our Summer-Workcamps. We are happy to receive your application and would be pleased to have a short explanation of why you would want to take part of our camps.

    Place

Dürnau is a small village in the heart of "Upper Swabia", sitting between Stuttgart and Lake Constance. The nearby nature reserve surrounding Federsee, the proximity to the Danube Valley and the short distance to the Alps offers a multitude of possibilities for lovely and meaningful leisure activities.

    Activities

The tasks of the Workcamp provide primarily for the upkeep and care of the community grounds and the support of various ongoing projects within our place. This year we envision the following tasks:

    - Continuation of the network of garden paths already underway
    - Uprooting and replacing of hedges, berry-harvesting
    - Dung removal and composting
    - Hay harvesting
    - Help with construction work
    - Assistance in dishwashing and cleaning up after meals

In case of bad weather, participants can help with simple construction work.

    Free time

In addition to the access to sporting activities like cayaking, biketours and mountain trekking in the Danube Valley and the Alps, we can off participants short courses in the operation, such as bookbinding, paper marbelling, making beehives, as well as bread-baking, butter-making, and canning methods. We can attend performances, speech art, produce a video, and will gladly offer advice for a theatre group.
    Climbers are welcome.

    Scheduled dates

We have organised for this year four workcamps on the following dates:

    01.06.2021 to 30.06.2021
