  • Description

I'm a retired english-american looking for ways to contribute positively to the world and find peace and relaxation in my mind & body. I particularly want to spend more time in Germany where I lived and studied as a student, and where I've visited several times in the past few years. I'd like to find Workaways where I can contribute and help, continue my German speaking, and feel like a valued member on a team.

  • More details about your skills

As a parent I am proud to have raised two boys, now in their 20's and finding their own ways independently.
As a home owner for 30 years I have often had to perform minor repairs and updates to my homes, and as a gardener I enjoy pottering around looking after my garden and, if I can before the animals get them, grow some fruits and vegetables.
As a pet-owner, I've taken care of animals, dogs and cats, of all ages. Sometimes I'm a dog-walker and cat-sitter for neighbors.
As a student I worked on farms for short periods in England, and in Germany. This work involved both animals and maintaining and harvesting produce.
As a professional in the software industry for many years I developed many skills using business applications and motivating and managing teams of people.
As a volunteer tour guide, I have provided guided walking tours around the historic Rondout neighborhood in my City of Kingston.

  • What else ...

Why do I want to do Workaway? I have traveled several times to Germany in the last few years, and have enjoyed vacationing, sightseeing and traveling. But what is missing for me on these trips is a real connection with local people. I think Workaway provides an opportunity for a productive travel experience where I can offer my skills, hardwork and knowledge to help others.

I love cycling and in the past couple of years I have done a couple of week-long cycling trips - last year in the Tatra Mountains on the Polish/Slovakian border and in 2022 across Bavaria, west to east. I also cycle frequently from my home in Kingston, NY. I am planning more trips in the coming year.

I have been a soccer player since an early age, and have since coached youth teams (with my children) and been a referee for the past 20 years. I love that refereeing enables me to stay involved in a sport I love, and also allows me to give back to the children and youth in my area. **Please note that as a Soccer Referee, I regularly have to pass a background check for US Soccer, and for the High School Soccer association, in order to work with children.]

I love traveling and in recent years have enjoyed many exchanges in homes throughout Europe, particularly in Germany, and also reciprocally hosted many guests in my home. I love this personal way of traveling, staying in homes not Hotels (or AirBnbs). I plan to continue doing this in future. I have also had the pleasure of hosting many cyclists traveling on the Empire State Trail in New York, often either traveling to, or from, the west Coast of the United States. These have been some wonderful meetings and I am still in touch with some of these people.

As a family-person, of course I cook, clean my own home, and my recent passion is baking bread - in particular sourdough. Of course I will try and prepare this in any environment that welcomes me!

Finally, should you wish to get references from me from other people in Germany, I have several people who I know from the years I've spent traveling to Germany, and would happily vouch for me.
