  • Description

Hello! My name's Sarah. I'm from the north of England - but from May to September 2026 I'm going travelling around Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji.

For the past 15 years, I've had jobs in youth work and in the creative arts sector. I've been doing things like: working at a children's writing charity; helping run a printing cooperative; popping popcorn and tearing tickets at an independent cinema; managing the team at an LGBT+ youth work charity; and overseeing a big children and young people's arts, culture and sports festival.

It's been great, but also very full on! So I'm now taking a few months to go to parts of the world I've always wanted to go to, meet new people, try new things, and figure out what I want to do next!

I'm really excited to be part of Workaway because:
    - when I last travelled for several months, in North America, I did lots of Couchsurfing. I loved connecting with people in this way. Being welcomed into people's homes and lives was so amazing, and such a privilege! And it meant a lot when I felt I could give something back through cooking my Couchsurfing hosts some nice meals (I love cooking!). So the reciprocal relationship of a Workaway stay feels like it would be perfect for me. I love meeting new people, and being helpful! (or trying to be, anyway)
    - I live in a city now, but grew up in the countryside, so staying in Workaways that are a little more rural would be great for me. I find a lot of peace and pleasure from being in the countryside.
    - I love doing DIY and am thinking of retraining as as a handywoman when I return to the UK! So getting more experience of doing a variety of practical / DIY tasks, and understanding the reality of this type of work a bit more, would be great for me, and something I'd really enjoy

I'm a creative person, and especially love reading, creative writing, watching films, and listening to music and going to gigs (I also DJ on the side!). My other interests include various sporty things (climbing, running, football, squash, hiking), though my enthusiasm massively outweighs my skill!

These are all things I'd love to share. I'm friendly, easygoing, and hard working, and excited to connect with other people on my travels!

  • More details about your skills

I have lots of experience working with children and young people aged from 0 to 25, and especially enjoy delivering creative workshops and projects with young people. I've been designated safeguarding lead and written safeguarding policies at organisations where I've worked. I also have an Enhanced DBS certificate.

I've completed a Fixing To Walls course, and am confident using a drill for most common household and garden tasks. I can do other bits of basic DIY too: replacing old sealant, replacing light fixtures, putting together furniture, and so on. I really enjoy DIY and am keen to improve my knowledge! I did a basic joinery course recently and would be keen to develop my skills further around carpentry, plumbing, and electronics.

I am very happy doing tasks around the garden: pruning, weeding, mowing, hedge cutting, digging out flower beds, etc.

I can turn my hands to quite a lot of creative things. I spent five years working at a creative writing charity, and studied creative writing at university. I've done all sorts of writing projects with children, young people, and adults: stories, plays, poems, songs, journalism, scripts, zines... I also used to co-run a print studio, so will have a go at most visual arts! I like singing, and can play a few instruments with varying levels of proficiency (piano is my best).
