Hii i'm Fien, a 20 year old student from Ghent, Belgium. I am now in my second year of studying Science of Arts. In 2023 I took a gap year to travel and volunteer, that's where I fell in love with workaway.
I love meeting new people , learning new skills, opening myself up to the world and getting to experience genuine connections. I feel very at peace when I'm surrounded by nature and animals, especially horses, they've always been a big part of my life.
Apart from nature, I adore immersing myself in art in any form: paintings, theatre, music, cinema, photography... I'm a creative person, my hobbies include playing the guitar, dancing, reading and journaling.
I am a very open-minded person and environmentally aware, I'm interested in philosophy, psychology, politics and I try to harm our earth as least as possible.

Hi, I have the honor to join my youngest daughter on workaway! She had beautiful experiences with workaway and I fell in love with her stories. Every year we make a trip together and this year we hope to give this an extra dimension adding volunteer work.
I am 49 years old and work as a educational staff member in an organisation that offers education to refugees and people with special needs as a result of psychosocial problems.
After many years volunteering in the Oxfam Fair Trade organisation, I am still involved in still involved in initiatives that contribute to a just society.
I love learning about different cultures and life philosophies. I like liturature, poetry, art, music, walking and improving myself in non-violent communication by means of workshops (teaching and studying).

Horse experience: I have extensive experience with horses for about 10 years now - riding them, taking care of them, doing groundwork,... I work with horses in a natural horsemanship way, which learned a lot about on one of my workaways (small horsefarm in Portugal).
Work experience: as a student job I worked as a sales-promotor for non-profit organisations like Oxfam and WWF. I loved doing this and the work really improved my communication and social skills.
Varia: I'm also part of a student movement called Comac, which is the student youth wing of the Belgian Marxist political party. We stand up for social justice, informing ourselves politcally, organizing protests as well as just having fun together.

It is very, very hard to put this into words but I tried :)
This has been one of the most beautiful and intense experiences of my life and I'm so grateful to have met Bianca and her family <3

First of all, the place itself is like heaven on earth. The nature is so beautiful and every morning I woke up in the van with a stunning sunrise over the… read more hills of Alentejo. The hikes and rides with the horses are amazing, you feel very connected while discovering these beautiful places together. They are so soft and intelligent, I've learned a lot from them.

The first week was incredibly overwhelming to me, it was all so new and I was very emotional because I got confronted with myself a lot but Bianca really helped me through it by supporting me, listening me and telling me she's proud of me. She always made me feel safe and loved and really seen as who I am. Bianca is such a gentle soul but also a very strong woman who I look up to, the work she does with the horses is so inspiring and you can see that she pours all her heart in it.

I've had so much fun, from galopping like crazy with Robin over the hills to building fairyhouses with the kids. In my freetime sometimes Bianca took me with her to see some places, I played games with the kids, had very nice conversations, baked a cake, read a book, cuddled with the cats, ... there's always something to do!

The work doesn't really feel like work once you get into the routine: feeding the animals, brushing and walking the horses, swapping them from field to field, cleaning up horsepoop and sometimes helping a bit in the household. You'll you go bed very tired but also very fulfilled :)
The second time I was there, there was another girl my age and it was very fun to be able to do the work together and in general to share this experience with someone! We talked and laughed a lot and became friends after a few days already.

The lifestyle is simple but so peaceful and I felt very healthy, I had so much more energy to do things than I was used to. I had time here to reflect about myself, which was sometimes hard but I'm also thankful because I discovered a lot about myself that I didn't know before.

I also was there when we had to say goodbye to Johnny, one of my favourite horses, which was incredibly hard. Everyone was feeling sad and stressed but we got through it together. It was a very emotional time but it was in a way also bonding.

Now it feels like I have a second family here. Thanks for everything, I love you guys and can't wait to see you again! <3
