Description
Hi I'm Eliza! I plan on travelling round New Zealand for the next 6 months. im excited to meet interesting people, and pick up some new skills along the way. I’m a hard worker, a quick learner, and excited for whatever comes next.
I love being in nature whether I’m hiking, swimming, or just standing around staring at trees. I’ve been trying to learn more about birds, but actually spotting them after hearing them is proving to be a lot harder than expected. Being outdoors makes my mind feel calmer, so I try to appreciate all kinds of weather as I genuinely love the rain. I also love finding a quiet spot with a good view and my current book, I'm always looking for new book recommendations.
I studied Physical Geography at university, which basically means I got to nerd out over the natural world specifically rivers, coasts and galciers. I’m hoping to get into the environmental sector in the future.
I’ve played hockey since I was little which has kept me disciplined and motivated. Recently I’ve been getting into drawing and watercolours with no expectation of being good, but because I enjoy creating. I’m also a big board-game and cards fan, especially Catan and Cambio. My roommates and I even keep a leader board. I love getting lots of people involved and teaching new games to anyone who’s up for it. I really enjoy meeting new people from all walks of life. I like to think I can chat to pretty much anyone.

More details about your skills
I studied Physical Geography at the University of Leeds, where I gained a mix of practical, computer, and field skills. I’m confident working with GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS), R-Studio, laboratory equipment, and environmental fieldwork methods. I enjoy hands on tasks just as much as analytical ones.
During university I worked as a Water Management Consultant at an engineering firm, helping out on lots of different environmental projects. I supported the team by reviewing technical reports, checking data, map making and helping with things like Flood Risk Assessments. A lot of the work involved collaborating with different teams, which I really enjoyed.
I also have plenty of experience working outdoors. As a conservation volunteer for three months, I removed invasive species (sometimes with a machete!), carried out physical labour in challenging weather, monitored wildlife, did litter picking, and created artwork for the local community. This experience taught me resilience, teamwork, and how to stay positive even when hot, muddy, tired, or dealing with a language barrier.
I’m comfortable doing fieldwork of all kinds: collecting water samples, entering rivers wearing waders, identifying macroinvertebrates and vegetation, and measuring water quality indicators like pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature.
Outside of environmental work, I’ve held various hospitality jobs as a bartender, waitress, café assistant, and now as a pot-wash at a catering hire company. These roles have made me fast, reliable, organised, and able to handle many tasks at once. I enjoy working in teams but can also stay focused when working independently.
For a year I worked at a children’s nursery with children aged 4 months to 11 years. I loved leading activities, playing, helping with development, and communicating with parents. I also handled admin tasks, confidential documents, and organised deliveries. I hold a DBS check (2020) and Paediatric First Aid (2020).
On a personal level, I’m practical and not afraid to get stuck in. I have experience gardening (planting, mowing, trimming, harvesting), painting rooms, organising social events, and helping care for my grandparents. I’ve played hockey since I was young, so teamwork and communication come naturally to me. And I love cooking my favourite comforts foods and also experimenting with new recipes.
Overall, I’m enthusiastic, adaptable, and excited to learn new skills. Whether you need help outdoors, around the house, with children, in the kitchen, or with more technical tasks, I’m always willing to give my best and bring positive energy.

What else ...
I am from a small town in England on the boarder of Wales, which has shaped me to love nature and community. I am looking for workaways which value genuine human interaction and love for the environment. I believe working away is all about meeting people with a different outlook on life as you to develop love and understanding. I am excited to get involved in anything!
