Description
Hello! My name is Artivia and I am a 25 year old woman living in Brooklyn, NY (but originally from Seattle, WA), who is, above all else, passionate about sharing in the little but meaningful joys of existence all over our planet. I have recently left my job following three years working in management consulting in New York City, with the plan of pivoting careers and applying to PhD programs in sociology this fall. After three grueling years in a mentally and emotionally exhausting job marked by near-constant intensity, high expectations, and long hours while living in a city best known for its nonstop commotion and energy, my nervous system (and soul) is desperately in need of a reset.
I would say my personality consists of a variety of contradictions - I'm fairly laid-back most of the time but also commit myself to certain goals with a seemingly uncharacteristic intensity, I am outgoing and social but can disappear into my own mind if not given enough time alone to recharge, I am an idealist and a romantic though with an occasional dash of nihilism, I relish letting my inner child out to play but have always felt like an old woman at heart, I'm an anxious adrenaline-junkie, and the list can go on.
Nevertheless, when I think about who I am deep down, the description that resonates the most is that I am distinctly a person who is completely enamored with humanity. From a young age, I have loved going outside of myself to instead become captivated by people both near and far in their entireties - from the way they think, how they feel, their history, their languages, the cultural practices they adopt, the things that make them unique, and all that make us all entirely the same at our cores. That being said, I hope to contribute to social science research with the ultimate aspiration of determining methods to bridge cross-cultural understanding and humanize "the other." I share all of this to express that I am looking for opportunities via Workaway not only to heal my nervous system but also enrich my soul and expand my mind. I plan to be working on my graduate school applications over the next few months with the hope that my novel experiences can add additional depth and perspective to my studies.
However, more relevantly to whoever might be reading this, I have long-standing passions for international travel, altruism, cultural exchange, caretaking / tutoring children, nature/outdoor activities, mindfulness, spiritual practice (across different ideologies), yoga, philosophy, poetry, history, psychology, language learning, reading, constantly learning new things, and last but certainly not least, spending time with the people I love most. I will also add that I am pretty extroverted and enjoy parties, nights out, dancing (to everything from techno to reggaeton), and meeting new people.
Through Workaway, I am primarily looking for opportunities to meaningfully integrate into different communities, meet people from all walks of life / facilitate cross-cultural exchange, contribute to different service projects, and just live every day like it's the only one I have (because for all I know it is). In short, I can say wholeheartedly that I am very much looking forward to all that my next chapter has to offer and all the beautiful people I will meet along the way :)

More details about your skills
I am highly proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). I have considerable experience in primary and secondary research (both academic and market-based), conducting interviews, and critical analysis, in addition to strong writing abilities. I have previously volunteered in a month-long homestay-based service project in a rural village outside of Monte Plata in the Dominican Republic. I am a big nature lover with a lot of outdoors experience including some backpacking experience (such as a two week backpacking trip through Canyonlands National Park in Utah). I have lifelong experience caring for and tutoring children of a variety of ages. I am very comfortable venturing outside of my comfort zone and living in multicultural spaces. I am fairly knowledgeable about mindfulness meditation, various spiritual practices, and yoga. While I can't say I'm particularly strong, I have no reservations about working with my hands and getting dirty.
