  • Description

Hello everyone! My name is Wendy, I’m 24 years old and from the Netherlands. I have a big love for exploring the world, learning new things and meeting new people. I really enjoy being in nature and spending time outdoors. Some of my favourite activities are hiking, kayaking, skiing and travelling to discover new places. Lately, I’ve also been having a lot of fun trying new hobbies like mushroom picking and bird watching.

I love being around animals, big or small, from farm animals to tiny furry friends. I have a calm, observant nature and with the right people, I’m up for spontaneous adventures. I don’t shy away from hard work and I quickly learn new skills when someone takes the time to explain and teach me something new.

I came to Canada in May 2024 on a working holiday visa and since then I’ve really been enjoying my time here. I’ve done a bit of traveling and exploring around the country and now I’m living in Powell River, BC. Here, I work as a sea kayak guide for day trips and multi-day adventures, taking people out to explore the beautiful waters of Desolation Sound.

Canada holds a very special place in my heart. I’m currently applying for permanent residency, and exploring different provinces and lifestyles is helping me discover the places that truly feel like home.

Through my Workaway experiences, I’m excited to learn even more about Canadian culture across different provinces. I hope to meet amazing hosts and other Workawayers and make new friends along the way! Let’s share experiences and create great memories together.

If you want to know more about me, feel free to ask! :)

  • More details about your skills

I love being around animals. I grew up on a hobby farm, so I’m used to caring for horses, cows, sheep, goats, chickens, dogs and cats. I also love gardening, including planting, transplanting, weeding, watering, pruning and harvesting. When I was a teenager, I had my own vegetable garden for salads and often helped my grandfather pick fruits. I understand what it is like to live on a hobby farm and feel comfortable with the daily tasks it involves.

I’ve also worked in hospitality and tourism. For two years, I was a travel guide during holiday seasons for children’s vacations in Europe, looking after kids aged 6 to 18. My main job was to make sure the children had a fun and safe holiday. I led (outdoor) activities and excursions, cooked for large groups and supported the kids throughout the trips. My dream is to become a travel guide and show people around amazing places like Canada, New Zealand and even Antarctica.

While studying, I lived on my own for three years, which gave me independence and experience with everyday household tasks. I’m comfortable with cleaning, cooking, laundry and general maintenance. I also worked as a part-time cook for two years during my studies, so I enjoy cooking and baking and love trying out new cuisines.

After finishing my studies, I applied for a Working Holiday visa and started exploring Canada. I quickly fell in love with the country and its outdoor lifestyle. I became a sea kayak guide and spent two summers leading day trips and camping trips in Desolation Sound. During that time, I completed Wilderness First Aid and a Marine Mammal Naturalist course (MERS). I also worked at a dogsledding business in Quebec, taking care of the dogs and helping with guided tours.
