  • Description

    Hi, I'm Sam.

I'm 27 from the North West of England. The reason that I've decided to go travelling is that I feel as though there is something missing in my life. In September 2024, I achieved my dream of travelling to the USA. I spent 3 weeks as part of a tour group, camping across the West from California to Nevada, Utah, Arizona and back to California. I visited national parks, such as Yosemite, Zion, Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon, getting a taste for the North American wilderness along the way.

I thrive on challenging projects that demand both strategy and physical execution. I spent the majority of 2025 as a volunteer at Barnton Bunker in Edinburgh, Scotland, helping to restore a decommissioned Cold War Nuclear Bunker into a museum and events space. Living and working as part of a community is an experience like no other and I've met many people from all corners of the world. Here, I applied my woodwork skills to navigate key infrastructure projects. This included constructing an access deck for the community area (https://youtu.be/QVvSqC0QTcs), building heavy-duty soil planters from 200mm wooden sleepers, and undertaking the demanding task of hauling large rocks and boulders from the bunker's quarry for site development.

I'm very creative and artistic and I'm also good at doing DIY and general woodwork/maintenance. I've made various things such as tables, benches, storage units etc. I worked at a kitchen cabinet factory for two years from January 2023, gaining a qualification in Furniture Manufacturering. I have some good experience cutting to size, drilling and assembling units of many shapes and sizes.

I'm a hard worker and I enjoy working on both solo and communal projects, getting stuck into any activity. I'm a good team player and I enjoy working as part of a group, sharing my knowledge and asking for help when needed. I'm looking forward to starting this next chapter in my life and seeing who I might meet.

  • More details about your skills

I am a very hands on person and I enjoy working hard on projects and seeing the results of my work. I'm a qualified furniture manufacturer and I worked at a successful kitchen cabinet factory for 2 years. A good reference from my boss would be available upon request.

My time spent volunteering at Barnton Bunker developed my expertise in several key areas, including advanced woodwork and carpentry and heavy material handling. I have proven proficiency in heavy timber framing and deck construction, as well as complex landscape stabilisation and community garden infrastructure setup.
