Hello!

I am Lucy from Devon in the UK.

I think I am:

1. Really practical with lots of skills.

Summary:

I am an ex-Army Officer, now a Naturopath/Wilderness Coach, and I have previously restored an old property, trained in organic farming, and created and run a successful Superhost Airbnb.

I enjoy design of all kinds (web, graphic, interior...); and anything to do with sustainable or organic living/farming/gardening.

- Previously renovated an old house, its gardens and annexed 5* Airbnb - particular love of natural/eco interior design
- I have a side business in website design and content creation/writing
- I am great at 'home staging' and photographing properties, and creating successful holiday property online profiles
- I have a passion for teaching, workshop facilitation, leadership and coaching
- I have completed many sustainability courses - including regenerative farming, harvesting and building
- Happy using power tools and machinery, and a sewing machine!
- I am a former Army Officer, and UN events manager

Skills aside, I love:

- Cooking delicious meals
- Sharing and exchanging stories and ideas
- Encouraging, listening and learning from/teaching others
- Keeping active and spending time in nature
- Reading, writing, being creative, skiing, hiking, singing and playing piano
- I love animals and have separate house and pet sitting references. My family have a farming background so I have done lots of lambing, chicken herding, and finding escapee goats!
- And shhh, don't tell anyone, but I love cleaning, and weeding! (I find them therapeutic!)

My reason for Workawaying:

I really love Europe, especially France, and want to spend more time there, with like minded people, which I hope will inspire and encourage me to take the leap to move one day! In return, I love offering my skills, taking on a project, sharing meals, skills, stories and ideas; doing something worthwhile and purposeful with my time - to keep motivated, fit and inspired by the places I go and people I meet.

Some of our skills include:

+ RENOVATION & DIY: We are both very practical and skilled, including: plumbing, electrics, carpentry, tiling, painting, plus laying a patio and interior flooring.

+ ENGINEERING: Paul is a Mechanical Engineer.

+ FARMING, ANIMALS, GARDEN & PERMACULTURE: Paul grew up on his family farm, and Lucy has attended several courses in sustainable, organic and regenerative farming. We are both dog and animals lovers; and are not afraid of the hard work that comes with caring for animals.

+ HOSPITALITY: We love hosting. We have both worked Winter and Summer seasons. Lucy has renovated and set up a successful 5* Superhost boutique Airbnb.

+ NATURAL HEALTH: Lucy is a qualified homeopath. You can find her online and social media as The Classical Homeopath. She enjoys teaching and giving talks to groups of friends and communities. She also teaches animal homeopathy to farmers with an charity called HAWL.

+ COOKING: Paul worked as a Sous Chef throughout uni, his travels and beyond. We both love cooking fresh, wholesome, healthy and delicious food.

+ BUSINESS, WEB & SOCIAL MEDIA: Lucy has a side business in web design and creating social media content, flyers, etc. Paul is very adapt with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus 3D/2D CAD software.

+ TEACHING/LEADERSHIP: Lucy has a background in leadership, teaching, coaching and developing others. Paul has taught snowboarding and mentored junior engineers.

+ HOUSE SITTING: We are both animal lovers, and from farming families, with dogs, sheep, cows, pigs, chickens etc. We are extremely tidy and responsible house guests, and we communicate with you as much or as little as you prefer. We treat your home, your pets, and your belongings as we would our own - in other words, with the upmost of care and attention. We can provide excellent references for house/pet sits we have done.

We had the most amazing time with Alex, Cath and their boys - not to mention their extended family of friends, neighbours, their lovely retreat guests, and Bailey the lovable dog.

Location:
They live way up north, where the snow is fluffy and deep for months of the year. (And then they get lovely clear summers too!) They are far from any light… read more pollution so the night skies are vast and incredible. And they have a wonderful community of friends around them who you will also get to meet. Their home is cosy and comfortable.

Fun:
We had a lot of fun! From sledging down their own toboggan slope, to ice baths (lots of ice baths, with great training from Alex, and we even got to attend one of their retreats, which was amazing, and extremely generous of them), to visiting their friends for a sauna, taking walks out on the frozen lake into the deep forest, driving the snow mobile, to fun nights dining and chatting together. There is probably a lot more than I have not mentioned too!

Food:
Wow. You will not want to leave! Cath and Alex are both great cooks. Alex sometimes did a fondue night, or a pizza night, lots of delicious breakfast waffles, or a reindeer stew cooked on the fire in a forest hut after an ice bath in the frozen river below... and Cath's cooking is out of this world - from super healthy organic dishes, stews and feasts with amazing, wholesome ingredients, to the most amazing tarts, cakes and bakes. They use loads of local, hand picked berries, their own eggs, home grown veg, pickles, Cath's incredible sourdough bread, milk from the local farm etc... We also got to cook and share recipes, and we helped set up and wash up before and after meals, as you would expect from a Workaway. We are now making a point of having weekend waffles with berries, yoghurt and all the toppings.

The work:
The work was fun, easy, extremely fair and purposeful. While we were there we mostly helped them moved a lot of items into their barn, as they were freeing up space for future retreats - it was a major project, and was fun. We had a clear goal from day one, and so it made it motivating and clear to know what needed doing. They let us work out where our skills were best put to use. We would pause for fika (tea) breaks, lunch, walks when it was sunny, and when neighbours came by - the pace of life here is very relaxed, fitting alongside their life styles. In a good way, Alex does not count your hours worked. They operate on a trust basis of putting in your effort, working towards a goal, eating together, and enjoy your spare time. So some days we chose to work our hours across the whole day, but with lots of breaks and interaction which was great - it is a truly immersive workaway, where you become part of family life, and go with the flow.
