Description
Hi! We are Griffin and Emma from Richmond, Virginia. We're in our mid-20s, have been a couple for almost four years, and we are excited and determined to see more of this Earth together. Most recently we were blessed to visit the capital of the North American continent, Mexico City. We've built the trust and confidence to keep adventuring together and we are sincerely hopeful for the future. "Caminante no hay camino, se hace camino al andar." (There is no path, traveler. Griffin learned how to read, write, and speak Spanish before attending university in Richmond. He spent a semester abroad in Alicante, Spain and saw more of the world in four months than he had in twenty years prior. When he returned to Virginia, teaching public high school Spanish gave him the opportunity to support and mentor young people. There is meaningful work in teaching and he hopes to return to the classroom one day as a more experienced and well rounded man. Griffin is eager for more opportunities to learn beyond the classroom.

Emma has worked in a couple different restaurants as a host, server, bartender, and shift supervisor over the past four years. She has lived in Virginia all her life but cherishes the opportunity to travel and experience new places.

Ricky and Lori hosted us at Treevana for 2 months. The community house has a beautiful covered deck with an unbeatable view of the sprawling jungle. The dinner table seats eight but most of the guests stayed in their treehouses or went into town for meals so we mostly had it to ourselves. The woven hammock on the deck is lovely. Our workdays began at 8:30am and continued until about 12:30pm. Ricky and Lori were insistent that we not work “overtime” and were very mindful about giving time back if we were deep in a project and asked to work a little longer in order to finish.

Operating the five treehouses as vacation rentals takes a lot of work. Lori’s organizational system is the result of many years experience. As workawayers, we were responsible for a chore list of some daily tasks and some tasks that changed for each day of the week. Turning over the treehouses to prepare them for incoming guests is an essential chore. The time that remained was dedicated to various projects around the property. Ricky’s toolshed is a wonderland. He certainly has the right tool for every job, you just need to know where to look (and he does). Our projects over 2 months featured cleaning, landscaping, minor construction, maintenance, repairs, and painting.

Thursday and Sunday were usually our days off, but they were flexible if we asked in advance to switch our off days in order to do an activity in the surrounding area.

Treevana is not directly on the beach, however Ricky and Lori have two mountain bikes available for the volunteers to use. Treevana is 1.4 miles of rock and gravel road away from the sand and the sea. The road is not flat. There are several hills (two particularly large ones). 100% walkable, but faster on the bikes. Those bikes were our ticket to paradise. Lori encouraged us to take advantage of every sunny day and to hit the beach after working. We took that advice to heart and were rewarded with some unforgettable afternoons on the tropical shores of playa Cocles.

We were rookies. This was our first workaway experience. Ricky and Lori are veterans with lots of experience hosting strangers. They are truly so generous with their knowledge and insight. They are patient and compassionate instructors. Ricky is happy to explain how things work and how to operate power tools for the first time. Lori is at home explaining the interconnectivity of the jungle’s ecology. She really knows her stuff and helps orient you to the experience of living amidst a wild jungle. They empowered us to paint a mural on one of the community house walls! By hosting us at Treevana, Ricky and Lori gave us the opportunity of a lifetime. We will remember our time here forever. We wish them and their future workawayers all the best. Pura Vida!!!
