  • Description

I am an Italian mechanical engineering student currently living in Switzerland, where I have been studying for almost five years. I am very close to graduating — I only have my German exam left to complete my degree.

This is my first experience with Workaway, and I am especially motivated to join because I want to improve my German in a real-life environment. I need to reach A2 level for my university exam, so I am very committed to practicing every day and making real progress.

Italian is my mother tongue, I speak English well, and I have an intermediate–advanced level of Spanish. I can also understand French. German is the newest language for me, but I am highly motivated to learn it, put in the effort, and challenge myself.

What motivates me most is the opportunity to grow through new experiences, meet open-minded people, and be helpful wherever I go. I am a positive, adaptable person who enjoys learning practical skills, working in a team, and stepping out of my comfort zone. I am looking forward to contributing, learning, and making this experience meaningful for both me and my host.

More details about my language interests
Languages are one of my main motivations for travelling. Italian is my mother tongue and I am happy to help others practice or learn it. I speak English well and Spanish at an intermediate–advanced level, and I can also understand French. At the moment my main focus is German, which I am currently approaching for the first time. I am highly motivated to improve it quickly because I need to reach A2 level for my university exam. For this reason, I am especially interested in environments where I can practice German in daily life while also helping hosts with my work and other language skills. I enjoy language exchange, conversations, and learning through real-life interaction rather than only studying from books.

  • More details about your skills

I am a mechanical engineering student with strong technical and practical skills. I have experience using Siemens NX, MATLAB, Simulink, and the full Microsoft Office package. I also use Canva and have basic video editing skills. During my studies I have worked on several projects, including the design of a vertical wind turbine that generates electricity from highway truck airflow, a shock-absorbing stretcher for patients on rough sea conditions, and a milling system for dog-bone test specimens. I also contributed to the redesign of the user experience and UI of bus ticket totems in Lugano and I am active in organizing university events.

Alongside my academic background, I have solid hands-on experience. I previously worked for a company producing racing boats and military/SAR vessels, and I currently work in my family’s medical business. At home I regularly take care of a large garden and swimming pool (water treatment and algae prevention). I have built concrete retaining walls, a gazebo, and a full masonry grill area, from foundations to finishing. I also manage composting and I am confident with basic mechanical repairs — if something breaks, I am usually the first to fix it.

I enjoy physical work and outdoor tasks because I like seeing concrete results from my effort. I also love cooking: I learned from my family and I am comfortable preparing meat, fish, vegetables, and desserts.

I have strong people skills developed through volunteering. I worked as a youth animator, helped at a horse stable involved in pet therapy for children and young people with Down syndrome and physical disabilities, and I am currently an emergency medical volunteer (118). This role taught me how important calm communication, empathy, and teamwork are when working with people of all ages and conditions.

Languages: Italian is my mother tongue, I speak English well, Spanish at an intermediate–advanced level, and I can understand French. German is currently at beginner level and I am highly motivated to improve it quickly.

I live independently and I am reliable, adaptable, and solution-oriented. When I receive a task, I take responsibility and make sure it gets done properly. I am very comfortable with technology, quick to research solutions when I don’t know something, and I genuinely enjoy learning new skills — especially the ones I have never tried before.

  • What else ...

I really enjoy DIY projects, especially when they involve electronics and prototyping. Over the years I have invested in my own small workshop setup, including some 3D printers and a laser cutter, which I use to design and bring my ideas to life. I like the full process — from concept to physical object — and I am always experimenting with new small projects.

In 2022 I participated in the Red Bull Soapbox Race with my team, and we won first place in the university category. It was an amazing experience that combined creativity, engineering, teamwork, and a lot of hands-on building.

If you would like to know more about me and my personality, you can also take a look at my Instagram profile (public): **@Fedeemorellii** (with two “e” and two “i”, not a typo ). What I share there reflects who I am and what I enjoy: mountains, the lake, good moments with friends, and some of my projects both in the kitchen and in the workshop.
