Description

We are two friends from a small town called Long Eaton just outside of Nottingham, England.
We are very eager to experience some different cultures and do whatever we can to help those in less fortunate positions than us. We both have a wide range of experience in different fields. Since completing A levels, Lawrence is enrolled to start a Nuclear Chemical Engineering apprenticeship with Rolls Royce this year, whereas Elijah is a first year Biomedical Science student at the University of Sheffield. Both of us have played sports (primarily football) for 10+ years, including a glory season in which we achieved promotion whilst playing on the same team. Also, we have both worked jobs in retail for a number of years, developing our social, communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills in differing environments. Despite our differing skills, we have many similar interests, most notably our love for nature and the outdoors and our desire to immerse ourselves in other cultures.

We have played and continue to play a range of sports whilst growing up, most notably football and tennis/table-tennis. Throughout our school years we were excellent tutors to our friends , each other and our classmates, often finishing our work early and using the remainder of our time to help others complete their tasks. Elijah has previous experience in bonding with and tutoring non-native English speakers whilst on holiday in Cambodia, and Lawrence loves to interact with and help to educate anyone that he can!

We are happiest when we are outdoors - we both love exploring nature and learning as much as we can about local ecosystems.
We used to enjoy gaming, although both of our studies and social commitments have pushed that to the side for now.
We are keen to involve ourselves in other cultures, life in England is nice but it gets boring after a while so we are looking for a refreshing change.

Lawrence and I stayed with Weza and his family for just under 3 weeks and we both agreed that this volunteering experience was the best thing we had done in our lives! Throughout our trip, Weza took it upon himself to give us the opportunity to explore Tanzania to the fullest. We were taken to play pool and drink beer at a local bar, watch a local football match at Arusha stadium and explore a beautiful, peaceful forest hidden away in the bustling city. At the same time, we were given lots of freedom to do whatever we wanted to do on afternoons after school and weekends where we didn’t have plans. Arusha is easy enough to navigate using google maps, Lawrence and I discovered local cafes, tuk-tuked to lake Duluti and back and walked around the streets without any issues. Weza also helped us to organise a fantastic safari, a trip to Materuni village waterfall (with a tour of the local coffee-making process included) and plenty more of local trips out!

Of course, the main point of the volunteering is the school and it is nothing short of incredible. We formed such beautiful bonds with the children, and made so many unforgettable memories. We helped them with their work, played football with them, pushed them on the swing and travelled to and from school with some in the school bus - driven by the ever-friendly and reliable Babu. The children have remarkable english skills and they made us feel so welcome and loved from our first day at the school, they are always full of energy and ready to play!

On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays you can go to the football academy that was started by Weza, and now competes in national competitions! The coaches made it so easy for us to just join right in, and the kids are so talented and welcoming. The pitch has a fantastic view of Mount Meru, so even if you do not play football it is worth the trip just to watch and take in the scenery.

All of the locals we met were warm and chatty, excited to learn about where you are from and how you are finding your trip. The majority of people have English good enough to converse with, and are very eager to teach you some Swahili to help you out!

It was our first time doing a volunteering trip like this and we cannot recommend Weza’s foundation enough, it is truly amazing and you are guaranteed to make incredible memories. We have such a positive perception of Tanzania and we will definitely be returning!
