Description
We are embarking on a trip to Australia & New Zealand after both completing a Masters in Sustainable Building. We've spent the past few years working, studying, and travelling the UK in our campervan. We enjoy hiking, swimming, cycling, climbing and watching the sun set. We also love music, cooking and sharing food with others! We now want to spend time exploring new places and contributing to sustainable building projects.
About Ben: My passion for learning new things has led me to work all over the place - as a snowboard instructor, an events coordinator and a vegetable grower. For the last five years, I have worked as a carpenter, focusing on sustainable construction methods and using natural materials. I enjoy listening to music, meditating and taking naps in the sun.
About Alice: I am inquisitive and deeply curious, so the past five years tutoring Physics and Maths for children and young adults has been incredibly rewarding. Outside of this, dance has been my long-term passion - whether it is grooving in the kitchen, or dancing Latin, Folk, or Swing styles - I'm always up for a boogie! I also enjoy yoga, getting stuck into a story book, and playing music. -

More details about your skills
Alice & Ben
i) Sustainable building design - We have both completed an MSc in Green Building (at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales). It was a 3-year course, focused on sustainable building design - including the use of CAD software for designing, monitoring and modelling building performance, practical testing of natural materials in retrofit and new build, and critical discussion of sustainability issues related to the construction industry.
Alice
i) Teaching - I have 5 years of teaching experience as a self-employed online Physics and Maths tutor for ages 13-19. I tailor each lesson for the student's learning style, building up their confidence and engaging them throughout. I am comfortable working with any age and would be open to teaching other topics like sustainable building or dance styles like Salsa, Bachata, Cha Cha, Lindy Hop, or even Scottish Highland dancing!
ii) Care work - I have 2 years of experience working with a team of carers who specialised in dementia care. I also have many years of experience caring for those with learning disabilities and have supported events ran by the Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association.
iii) Other/creatives - I enjoy making jewellery and carrying out basic alterations to second-hand clothes. I have played the flute in a couple of small local bands, but would love to gain more confidence in joining jam sessions!
Ben
i) Agriculture - I have more than two years experience as a commercial vegetable grower in the UK. I have worked at two farms - a 50-acre regenerative farm where I was the lead grower (teaching volunteers and managing the farm day-to-day), and an 80-acre permaculture farm where I was part of team managing a CSA vegetable box scheme, 300 free-range chickens, a micro-dairy herd, a rotational grazing plan for cattle and sheep, and running a busy campsite and farm shop.
ii) Carpentry - I have a variety of experience - building traditional timber-framed barns, poly-tunnels, cabins and converting vans. Alongside carpentry skills, I have basic plumbing and electrics knowledge. Carpentry has been my day-job for the last 5 years, and I currently work on a self-employed basis on a variety of projects.
iii) Events Management - At university, I ran a music events company and organised events for 3 years. Alongside this, for 3 years I worked as part of a small team to run Europe's largest annual student-led charity festival (ValeFest), during which I programmed line-ups, managed site builds and stages and leased with charities to provide fundraising opportunities. -
