After hosting workaway guests for years in my home, I became ill and had to let go of the house that many workawayers help built and maintain!
After being part of a cohousing project in Gent and building with hemp concrete, which finished last month, I’m now involved in a new project in Croatia.
This time we aim at creating a place to host (young) people who want to learn and practise ecological (semi) off grid living, building with natural and local materials and bio-dynamic farming. To establish the infrastructure for guests, we need a lot of help. The first investments will be finished at the end of august, which will include a functioning kitchen and bathroom in the main house. From that point onwards, we want to work on several projects, like building composting toilets and an outdoor shower, dismantling a huge barn carefully so as to repurpose the materials, dismantling the stables, digging out a pond so as part of the water management system. Gardening and setting up camping infrastructure is also on the list. The first goal is to create sufficient accommodation for the volunteers. There are tents and camping material present, but we want to move from that to more ‘solid’ structures…
We would welcome volunteers from 20th of august till the end of October. In the spring of next year we will continue the process, as the project is not winterproof yet…

Help around the house
Next to the village, the town of Krizevci offers great food, bars, shops and a train to Zagreb on a regular basis (60km). Further more, we are a learning community with lectures and workshops on the economy of communion.
The help would consist of teamwork around the house and in the garden. For the farming experience we collaborate with a very famous bio-dynamic farmer , in the same village. A lot of the work is about deconstruction and salvage materials, but also install non technical items such as fencing.
This host offers a language exchange
A native speaker Croatian would be very welcome.
At first we provide tents on a camp ground and shared use of bathroom and kitchen in the main house. Later more infrastructure will be installed on the campground, such as composting toilet, open air shower, electrical hookups, etc! We also want to reuse some of the wood to create a common house on the camping ground, that will be for all seasons and will have a kitchen, several showers and toilets and a sitting area.
Although I am living in Gent, I will be regularly in Croatia to develop the project, together with local farmers and friends. This profile is no longer about Belgian projects, but about the project in Croatia
