During my stay, I helped to Met generally with cleaning the house and cooking. Beyond the tasks, I really appreciated the time we spent sharing travel stories and experiences. They have great knowledge of Istanbul and recommended many places that I truly enjoyed discovering. It felt like a cultural French- Turkish exchange, not just a stay. Overall, it was a lovely experience with a very positive energy.

So good. Dave is doing something really special creating such a spot for people to be together, rspecially in this tired world. David is an open person with a good heart. It easily goes to the top set of the list ”the best experiences in my life” I think everyone before me did better describinghow life here was. Most of all it was the living with these people and enjoying their lovely and lively company, little games and playfullness, living so close to nature, staying on the boat. Daily treasure hunting from local dumpsters, swimming, talking, friendships, laughing lots, someone just picking the guitar, some work on the boat.. This place did quite something healing my soul on the inside and returning my faith on people. I hope to be back one day. I miss it all often. Greetings 🌊

Bocas caught a piece of my heart! The work at the hostel is really chill, I worked 20 hours per work week (e.g. if you arrive on Wednesday, your work week starts on Wednesday). The work hours were usually distributed per 3 days, so it’s 6-8 hours long days, but the other 4 days are then completely free. Your tasks are at the reception, it’s mainly about the check-in/check-outs of the guests and giving your best to answer any questions. Also, you’ll be checking around the hostel whether everything is fine, like feeding the cat, putting the clean dry dishes away, very easy. If you work here, you will get the help of a PDF with checkable tick boxes for all your tasks (that I made hehe). There’s also some time where you don’t have to particularly do something other than just be at the desk and be available. There’s a work group chat, if any questions come up during your shift, do send a message with literally anything, better you ask too much. Carolina is a nice and patient person, you’ll have a good time. I used my free time to go surfing A LOT, you can rent a board or get a lesson at Mono Loco. At Mono Loco, there’s also the chocolate manufacture Cacao Blessings that makes chocolate from scratch with local ingredients and supporting their female workers. The owner is an amazing woman, say hello from me :) They have amazing drinks also! For cheap food that is not only fried chicken check out the stalls at the corner of the park (~$5), they’re open until very late! Another recommendation is Street Tacos Bocas, the portions are filling and also rather cheap ($6-10). On Wednesdays, there’s Salsa Night with a little lesson in Aqua and on Thu/Fri/Sat there’s great live music at Vibe. Support the community by buying their empanadas or tamales when they walk around and offer something. You have the opportunity to find some great people in the community, and within two weeks I managed to walk around the streets and ALWAYS finding someone that I know. Bocas is small :) Good to know for you: If you want to go to the beach, you need to take a taxi boat to Isla Carenero ($1-2) or a bus ride up Isla Colón. The coastline of the southern part of Isla Colón is not a beach access, there‘s lots of boat traffic. I enjoyed it at the hostel and hadn’t I made different plans already, I would probably have extended my stay. Thank you, Carolina and Ingrid, for taking me in!

Thank you for welcoming me into your home. I am so grateful for everything I learned here. Lakshmi was a patient teacher, showing me how to peel potatoes with a spoon and how to make chapati. Even though mine still turn out a bit oval, I promise to keep practicing until they are perfectly round! She also made sure I was part of the fun by teaching me card games and helping me win. It was a true privilege to be here while Garima was visiting. She is an incredibly wise and sensitive soul. Our conversations—ranging from politics and crime to nature, dreams, deeply inspired me to study harder and learn more. She truly reminds me of a Nepali version of Anne of Green Gables. I also enjoyed the unique experience of being here during the elections. Spending time with Krishna, scrolling through Facebook, and following the results together. I never went hungry, and I always felt completely cared for. You are an amazing family, and I truly hope to return one day.

We’ve just finished our 3-week stay with Samuel, and all we can say is: what an incredible experience. From day one, Samuel and his family welcomed us and made us feel at home. Kanoni might not be big or have everything, but we quickly grew very fond of it and the simple daily life there. This was our first time teaching, and although there was a bit of a language barrier at first, the local teachers were very supportive, and it quickly felt natural. It’s clear how passionate Samuel is about this project, and you truly see the impact he has on the community when visiting the different schools and seeing all the happy faces. We also made a good friend, Ibrah, who helped us with many practical things in town, like getting SIM cards and withdrawing cash. We spent much of our free time together - going fishing on weekends, playing pool, watching football, and grabbing a drink in town after school - which made the whole experience feel more authentic and relaxed. The children we met may not have had much, yet they showed so much joy, kindness, and energy. We especially loved playing football and netball with them - these are definitely the moments we will miss the most. The other volunteers also played a big role in our experience, and it didn’t take long before it felt like a small family. If you’re considering going, you should know that this is not a luxury experience, but a very real and meaningful one. You become part of daily life, and that’s exactly what makes it so special. We leave with unforgettable memories and a lot of respect for what Samuel is building here. Thank you, Samuel, for giving us this opportunity!

Laura was a fantastic help. She mainly supported our butterfly house staff with extra help here and there as well as doing tours in English. She also helped our casita staff with breakfast on Sundays. We enjoyed hiking together and talking about nature. She was above and beyond and good company very presentable and professional, highly recommend.

Dear family, thank you for the beautiful moments we shared in your warm home. I felt like home with you and all the memories will stay with me for the rest of my life. Your garden inspired me to continue working on my own one here in Slovakia. I wish you plenty of good moments with your plants and the people that youre gonna meet. I hope we see eachother soon! Sending you big hugs, Rovena :).

There is not much to say about Veronika if not that she has been one of the best volunteers I have hosted. For sure in the last 2 years the best one. Hard worker, very respectful of the house rules and always available and proactive. She is a very lovely and funny woman, I really liked everything in her, she stayed with us for almost 2 months we would have like it to be 2 years. I highly recommend Veronika to any host in workaway. Missing you!!! Ugo

We feel deeply grateful for the beautiful time we shared with Kass in March 2024. In just one week, he became a part of our family. Through his English sessions, world map puzzle, and storytelling, children travelled across the world from Toronto to Kolkata, South Africa to Nepal, and Dubai. His way of sharing cultures, climates, and stories made learning joyful, alive, and deeply engaging. We haven’t hosted anyone from Iran yet, but Kass, with his roots from Iran, made us feel a deep sense of connection and warmth towards the culture. We are a fully vegetarian space, and despite coming from a strong non-vegetarian background, he embraced everything we offered with so much happiness that it became infectious for all of us. He shared his travel stories with great sensitivity and respect, which helped children not just learn but also develop openness towards the world. Our evening walks together became spaces of laughter and meaningful conversations. He also carried out all his responsibilities with dedication and sincerity, always showing up with a positive spirit. More than teaching, Kass built connections. The children felt seen, heard, and inspired. His presence brought curiosity, laughter, and global exposure into our small learning space. It means a lot to us that he experienced it as a place of warmth, trust, and genuine exchange. As he shared, this is not a school but a space where children grow freely, and where volunteers become part of the community. We wish him many more meaningful journeys ahead.

Really lovely couple. Very much into wellness and totally committed to making whatever they do perfectly. They made a brilliant job of scraping , sanding down and painting a couple of my walls and I feel sure they'll look good for years! If you want a fast rough job, these guys are not for you, but if you want attention to detail, and polite, respectful, friendly, and charming people, they are definitely your go to guys. Plus Simon has a 'Handpan', and instrument I've been dying to get my hands on for years! :D Would definitely host them again. Thank you Charlotte and Simon

Alan has visited on two occasions (in 2019 and 2026), staying for over a month each time. On both visits, he completely transformed our garden; he is truly the most talented gardener I have met, and I learned so much from our time working together. Alan is very kind, friendly and thoughtful as well as extremely knowledgeable in so many different areas! His years of experience are evident in his professional, easy approach to every task. He has a deep understanding of plants and flowers, but he’s also impressively proactive—if he encounters a new challenge, he’ll research it and find a solution independently. Physically, Alan is very strong and fit and loves going on long walks in the countryside. He worked so hard during his time here; he pruned roses, shrubs and trees; he planted, trimmed, created trellises for climbers and rambling roses (and so much more!). He can also build dry stone walls and is good at building and fixing things. Alan was also very good at detecting the reasons why plants and trees were not thriving or were suffering and came up with good solutions for problems (thinking about soil type, depth of planting, overwatering or underwatering etc). I am incredibly grateful for his time and hope he returns soon. I would highly recommend Alan to anyone looking for expert help in their garden or simply a lovely, intelligent person to have around!

We had a great first work away experience with Gustavo at the lovely hostel. He’s a very relaxed host and has two adorable dogs, Nala and Thor! The work was as described: we did a mixture of cleaning, check ins, helping guests and preparing breakfast for the following day. We worked 4 days each week and had a lot of free time. We visited Torres del Paine for a couple of days when we had time off which was also beautiful! Gustavo prepared delicious vegetarian lunches and dinners each day which we all ate together while chatting about our different home countries and cultures. We shared a small bunk bed room/bathroom with two other lovely volunteers - however the room could get a bit cramped at times if we were all in it. Overall, we loved our time here. It felt like a great time to relax and chill out from busy travelling. It was also great to practice our Spanish more and meet new people. Thanks Gustavo and Mila!!

We spent a month and a half with Jan and Jeanette, and it was a wonderful experience. From the moment we arrived, we felt at home and part of the family. The accommodation was fantastic: we had our own room and a private bathroom, which made our stay very comfortable. Our main tasks involved painting and working in the garden. It was very rewarding to learn new skills and see the results of our work come to life. For one week, we also looked after their lovely dogs, Baby and Lola. They are the sweetest: well-behaved, cheerful and playful. Spending time with them and taking them for walks was so much fun and definitely one of the highlights of our stay. Jan and Jeanette are wonderful hosts. It never really felt like a Workaway experience, but rather like helping friends or family. We mainly worked with Jan, who always gave clear instructions while also allowing us plenty of flexibility and independence to approach tasks in our own way and even suggest ideas. One of the best parts of each day was enjoying Jeanette’s delicious lunches. She’s an amazing and creative chef! Finally, Ostuni is a beautiful area with plenty to explore, from scenic walking trails to nearby towns easily accessible by train. We were also able to borrow bikes and discover the surroundings, which we really appreciated. We were sad to leave and would love to come back again someday.
