Nozomi is a wonderful person and most likely actually an angel. She has stayed here during one of the busiest weeks of the year and I really can't thank her enough for all she has done to help me. From gardening, to cooking delicious meals, teaching me Japanese and assisting me in organizing a social event, she has always been extremely sweet and ready to help. She warmed the house with her kindness and made everyone in the team feel comfortable. Thank you so much for everything, I hope we meet again!

Marcel stayed at my place for a little over a month from November until mid December and he was really a great help in and around the house and the terrain. There were still tomatoes ripening in the greenhouse when he arrived, but many of the green ones didn't manage to finish ripening, so he looked into recipes to process green tomatoes. This is an aspect that I really enjoyed: Marcel will look into stuff, look up recipes and then try these, usually with a twist of himself. He is quite creative with food, and loved what you can do with cooking pear + wine + blackberries and, because we're in Belgium, chocolate! Marcel has a positive outlook on life and is very open minded. During his stay he did a ton of work, literally: I had started working on filling gabions with rocks from the terrain, which he largely finished, but we're talking about at least 3 cubic meter of rock that had to be placed in these gabions like tetris blocks, which he completed meticulously. I would definitely recommend Marcel as a workawayer, great conversations and a great sense of humor.

What can I say about this experience? I stayed at this farm in February, and it was truly unforgettable. The work is physically demanding, but that’s actually a positive thing because you really feel like you’re working hard and doing it for all the animals in the sanctuary. The animals are incredibly cute, and they definitely make you laugh. The workday starts at 9:30 a.m. and finishes around 1:30–2:00 p.m. Then we have lunch and start again at 3:00 p.m. until about 4:30–5:00 p.m. Each day, a specific work area is assigned, and you focus on that area for the day. The best part of this experience is the other volunteers. I was lucky enough to meet truly amazing people. Everyone had different stories and came from different places — it felt like discovering the whole world. Spending evenings together around the table, eating or playing cards, was really wonderful. There were about 15 of us volunteers, and everyone was kind, friendly, and respectful, so there was always a great atmosphere. If you’re looking for a place to have an unforgettable experience, I truly recommend it. The people you meet here make all the difference and, in my opinion, turn it into one of the best places you could ever go. Thanks to all the staff — if I had had more time, I would definitely have stayed longer!

Melissa and Mark were the best hosts I've stayed with so far. I felt like part of the family, the work was enjoyable, and Mark often took me to cool places in the area. In the Evenings there was always enough time for excellent meals together, good conversations, games, or movies. Communication was flawless, and they always asked for my opinion and addressed any issues openly. The Southern Highlands are a wonderful change of scenery from the coast and well worth a visit. I highly recommend staying with Melissa and Mark, and I miss Murphy the puppy! Cheers Manuel

I stayed with Josie for about 10 days, and it was a wonderful experience! From the very first moment I arrived, they were incredibly kind and welcoming. The work was very enjoyable for me and mainly involved pruning olive trees or, if it was raining, helping with household tasks either in their home or in their son’s house. The work was never too demanding, and whenever necessary, they were always very understanding. From a work perspective, I’m very satisfied, especially because the schedule was really comfortable. In the middle of the morning, they would always offer a delicious cup of tea or coffee and a nice break. If you come here, don’t worry about the food — Josie is an amazing chef! You will never be disappointed, as she prepares a wide variety of dishes from all over the world, and they are absolutely delicious. On my last day before leaving, they even made sandwiches for my journey (thanks again!!!). The location of the house is truly beautiful if you love nature. In the afternoons after work, I would always go for walks with the other volunteers or by myself, and I completely fell in love with the place. There are beautiful trails, and the mountains are absolutely stunning, with magnificent colors. The town is also very charming, and there’s a lovely river where you can relax. Josie and Barry are truly fantastic hosts who treat you extremely well. They are also very interesting people who will share many incredible stories with you. That said, if you’re thinking about coming, I would definitely recommend it — you won’t regret it!

I would highly recommend Nanaka! We already miss her. She is kind, happy, organised and always willing to help. You don't have to ask her to do anything because she does it automatically. My 3 year old loves her and my 6 month old baby as well. We loved her authentic Japanese food 👌🏻🩷 It has been a pleasure to have you and you are always welcome in our home.

Mette was an excellent addition to our family. She had great communication skills, our children felt at ease with her and she was great to have a chat with. She was up for learning new skills like surfing with us and taught me how to make a barista style coffee and our kids how to make pottery and water colour. We hope to see Mette again soon :)

It's been a real pleasure to host Michael. We did plan a 15 days stay but then we were so happy that we extended to 2 months! He showed a natural tendentency at wanting to be of benefit. He is strong and doesn't mind hard work. He helped building the new boxes for growing veggie and planting over 1.000 plants in our new garden. A massive job executed with ease and perseverance. He became friend of all the team because is also a great companion and friend that everyone appreciated. He will stay in our hearts and mind . Thank you Michael !

It was a pleasure to meet Margot. She is always welcome back! She was helpful, fun and energetic. She quickly became a part of our daily life, as a family. She was quick to see for herself, where she could help. She took part in all our family projects and did not even have a problem with fulfilling my daughters birthday wish, that we all went out to eat sushi, dressed in Cosplay :) We miss her already. Our goats have also told me that they miss her :) We wish Margot that all her dreams come true in life. We hope to go visit her in France one day!

I loved my time here. It was wonderful and I am so greatful I had this experience. I miss it already. Everyone was very welcoming, and I felt genuinely cared for. The work was clear and relaxed, the house filled with amazing interesting people. Easy to get to Berlin or town and do other activities too. Surrounded by a nice forest so good for biking or walking. Not sure what else to say but I wanted to write a review before I forgot :) would recommend.

Lovely family and very structured, organized work helping Ludovic with home projects. The Au pair Nat made great meals and Irene was really cool to talk to. We had fresh milk and cheese and plenty of close hiking trails

Better late than never! We stayed with Eve & Gary for a whole month in October. We stayed in the beautiful gîte, which is perfect for a couple. It started to rain in mid-October, so we spent the dry days working outside (vegetable garden and maintenance, painting the greenhouse, raking leaves, and tearing down a wall). And on rainy days, we did some indoor tasks (insulating the kitchen ceiling, organizing the tool shed, and tidying the shed). The meals Eve provides are always fantastic, and she's also the best at explaining things. We learned a lot from her! We had great time with the kids, had fun times around the bomfire(s), and even celebrated Halloween with the neighbors! Thank you for the good times.

We stayed with Birgit for almost a month in January. Due to personal family matters Brigit had to leave Portugal, so we ended up housesitting and taking care of her lovely dog, Lady. We really enjoyed it—despite the bad weather during that period (lots of rain and storms unfortunately). The location is breathtaking and we took many wonderful trips to the beach in the pickup truck with Lady and our own dog. We worked fewer workaway hours than usual because of the housesitting, but the tasks we did were varied: chopping wood, cleaning, cooking, fixing her campervan and improving the road drainage. Thank you Birgit for your trust and sharing your house with us!

The Fool Who Found His Garden There is a Tarot card that most people misread. The Fool stands at the edge of a cliff — not from ignorance, but from a different kind of knowing. He has walked every road. He has slept in the belly of a twelve-metre bus while Europe rolled past the windows like a dream someone else was having. He has read Dostoevsky by lamplight and understood, in his bones, that the underground man was right — and wrong — at the same time. He arrives at the cliff's edge and does not fall. He plants. Jan is an engineer who never stopped being a philosopher. An anarchist who builds things that last. A musician who understands that the most radical act is to make something beautiful in a world that profits from ugliness. The bus was not an escape. It was a laboratory. Twelve metres of mobile truth — testing what is essential, what is theatre, what dissolves when you remove the scaffolding of fixed address and social performance. Jung would say: he was circling the Self. Dostoevsky would say: he was burning through his illusions the honest way — by living them to their edge. La Palma was not the end of the journey. It was the answer the journey was always circling toward. "It's paradise — it's only people that are able to create hell out of it." This is not cynicism. This is a man who has seen enough of both to know the difference — and who chose, consciously, to become a keeper of the former. Even the name spirals inward — toward center, toward depth, toward the ancient dragon tree that has survived everything by simply being rooted and reaching simultaneously. That is Jan. He says life is a theatre and he is the Fool. But watch carefully — in Shakespeare, in Tarot, in Jung's trickster archetype — the Fool is the only one who tells the truth. The only one free enough to see the whole stage while everyone else performs their assigned role. He found the best seat. Not to disengage — but to see clearly. And from that seat, he keeps making beauty. Not as decoration. As resistance. As the only answer worth giving to absurdity. If you arrive looking for paradise ready-made, you will miss it. But if you arrive ready to participate in the beautiful illusion — conscious, willing, awake — you will find something rarer than paradise. You will find a place where someone decided that creation matters more than comfort, that roots and freedom are not opposites, and that the spiral always leads somewhere worth going. Thanks for coming, he says. As if he is the guest. As if the gift flows both ways. It does. — Written in the spirit of La Palma, where the volcano reminds you that everything is impermanent, and the dragon trees remind you that some things endure anyway.

This was my first workaway and it was perfect. Howard, the owner, is a man with a big heart. He's kind, easy-going and cheerful, The gang was friendly and helpful. There was good camaraderie. The work was easy. 4 hours each day, managing check ins and check outs and whatever guest-related tasks that were required. Yes, I would do recommend this to anyone eager to try workaway. Melaka is a cosy small town and this hostel is a perfect start.
