  • Description

We are inviting you to spend some time on our 20-acre property in the Columbia Valley of British Columbia, also known as the Rocky Mountain Trench. It’s an amazing area between the Rocky Mountains and the Purcell Mountains, with endless outdoors recreation opportunities. We are close to Radium Hot Springs on the edge of Kootenay National Park.

Our little piece of land is located right on the river. We have two horses on the property, and usually bring the family dog. This year, we are building a home and a barn, and are clearing some land to expand the useable area for the horses.

Our priority for the fall of 2019 is to finish the horse barn and possibly some fencing, as well as ongoing improvements, such as clearing land and seeding. Handy people who can help with some woodworking would be fabulous. Experiences with horses is also a plus.

We can best accommodate one or two helpers who would stay in our large, comfortable camper on the property. You would want to have your own car, or for shorter stays, we can lend you ours if you have a drivers license. You would be very independent there, as we live 10 minutes away in town.

We are Canadians and we know and love British Columbia! We have also traveled widely and speak French, German and some Spanish - and of course, English. We can help you with your language skills, if you like, but if you’re not confident in English, we’ll have fun communicating in any way we can.

Life in this part of British Columbia is very different from the more urban areas. Old meets new here. Tourism is well-developed, but there is also a quirky, original way of life in the small towns and villages.

Wildlife is abundant; Radium Hot Springs is famous for its herd of bighorn sheep, elk are frequently seen, as are many, many other creatures! The protected Columbia wetlands, which our property borders on, are unique in the world for wildlife, in particular migratory birds.

We can introduce you to some of the activities in the area, such as canoeing, kayaking or paddle boarding on the lakes or river or hiking in The Valley and in the mountains. We have bicycles you are welcome to use on nearby trail networks. If you are driving, you can easily tour the Rockies from here. For example, Banff is only 1.5 hours away. There is also lots going on in the towns during summer, from outdoors concert, markets, drumming sessions, and more.

If you are used to horses, our two would love your attention and can always use more exercise.

  • Help

We like to host one or two people who can help with two main things:

Help us on our property where we are building a house and barn (with a professional builder) and have two horses. This could be anything from helping to stack hay bales, feeding the horses (you don’t have to be experienced for this), setting up a tent shelter, help build a fence, help clear some more land.
The barn construction is finished, but things like painting, putting up shelves are still to be done.

If you ride horses, we can trail ride together!

  • Accommodation

For two people, or one person who likes to be by themselves, we have a large camper with hot water, heat, kitchenette, a double bed and an additional pull out couch. Bedding or sleeping bags, your towels and more are provided. If you are traveling with a camper van or RV, you can park it in a nice spot on the 20-acre property, take advantage of ‘services’ (water, electricity) and you’re at home.

While you are here, you can make your own food some or all of the time. The camper has all the kitchen facilities incl. refrigerator, stove, microwave, and dishes, and a propane BBQ. We are not able to cook for someone at this time because we don’t live onsite. We will keep your fridge stocked with fresh food though!

If you are interested and need transportation to get here, please look for buses to Golden from Calgary or Vancouver-Kamloops. If you arrive by bus, we can meet you in Golden, as well as Banff or Cranbrook.
