DO YOU LOVE CATS & DOGS? WANT TO LEAVE YOUR FOOTPRINT ON THIS AWESOME PLANET!
We are looking for beautiful souls that want to make a positive change. If you are this person, please contact us!
ONLY PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY IN MEXICO OR HAVE A TICKET ALREADY TO TRAVEL TO MEXICO CAN APPLY!
ALSO WE ACCEPT ONLY PEOPLE THAT CAN COME RIGHT AWAY OR A MAXIMUM OF A MONTH PRIOR TO ARRIVAL.!!!
***THIS SAID, WE WANT TO ASK EVERYONE WHO APPLY TO HELP US OUT TO PLEASE BE CONSCIENTIOUS!!! We love to welcome anyone who loves animals & wants to give us some help, however, PLEASE don't apply and say you are coming if you are not positive you will be here, and this is why we will only accept people who are in Mexico or have a ticket to come to Mexico, because we know you may end up not traveling for whatever reason & we dont want to waste your time or ours. We are a rescue with many animals who need care. Cancelling last minute puts us in a really tough position. Although you are volunteering, please be responsible and understand we rely on volunteers to care for our animals.***
Hi everyone, I’m Madi & I have been rescuing homeless cats & dogs for over 30 years. My work started in Belize where I fished kittens from plastic bags thrown in the water to drown and this led me to open the first cat sanctuary in Belize and central america. My work consists of total rehabilitation eg. Quaranteen, testing for contagious or other diseases, vaccinating, sterilizing & rehoming overseas as there are no homes left in this small city for adoption. Sterilization is the first & most important thing one can do to break the vicious cycle of more animals being born unwanted. (We urge travelers that find animals to please not JUST feed them but to please get in contact with an ngo or vet clinic & sterilize them, this is the most humane thing you can do for them.)
When i began my work with animals prior to Facebook, it was practically impossible to find homes on the small island as there were so many animals and not enough homes.
I moved to Mexico a few years ago where I continue to do my rescue work and i also do 2 monthly low cost sterilization clinics to control animal population & their suffering.
The cats at the Meowtel are mosthly senior cats still alive from our Belize cat sanctuary. They are 15+ years old. Sparky, one of our 4 blind cats was the oldest 25 and just passed away. Garfied is now the oldest alive at 24 and is doing great. As the cats are older my work has shifted from a cat sanctuary to a senior home for cats. (RIP Sparky)
I placed hundreds of animals in great homes overseas. The cats at the senior home grew older waiting for homes & were never adopted, as this was prior to Facebook. Most have some type of medical problem but are still enjoying life. We are always lacking in funding and there are so many things we would love to do, to make the life better for the animals as you will see if you volunteer. However we barely are making it to feed and care for them.
There are so many ways everyone can help, and we really welcome & value your help. Some examples are:
1. Spread the word about our workaway volunteer program to others on social media.
2. Set up a table at different events in your city to spread the word about our volunteering program & fundraise for our rescue.
3. Start a go fund me for our rescue.
4. Spread the word about our animals on adoption.
5. Adopt a dog or cat.
6. Donate a bag of food or other on our Amazon wishlist.
7. Become a monthly donor via our paypal account.
If you would like to help & have other ideas please contact us.
Please keep in mind that the cats and dogs at this sanctuary do not live the way your pet would live in your home, most cats share a room and a couple that can't get along are separated as well as the dogs who are separated in the front and backyard.
We need persons who really love animals and are strong physically, mentally and emotionally and can walk away at the end of their work without feeling sad or bad that you cannot do more and understand that this is how rescue work is and that unfortunately there are not enough homes for animals and some may not get adopted.
Our dogs at the rescue were homeless street-dogs and are very, very sweet and want lots of attention. Some are okay at walking, but some are still learning how to be on leash and have walking manners. We need people who can be firm and patient with them, preferably someone with experience that knows about the pack mentality and can control them as you will be walking them through the streets where you will run into other dogs and have to hold them back.
At the end of your volunteer work, we think that you will find your experience rewarding as you will realize that your walks were not just leisurely walks, but that you helped us a lot by teaching them how to walk and feel confident and they will love you for that!
Here 90% of dogs and cats are discarded like garbage. It's a massive problem. This is why we do the work we do and this is why we need people that want to come here for the sole reason of helping animals.
This is not a party at the beach or a social experience to meet people like at a hostel (don't get me wrong, you can have fun or socialize but people that are looking for a more quiet environment cuddling animals, reading, yoga, meditating will thrive here). That being said, it can be an adventure of a lifetime if you are coming with the right intentions.
We need people who genuinely love cats & dogs to cuddle our senior kitties & give lots of doggie head scratches as they are so needy for love and attention :)
The minimum stay is 2 weeks but if you love the position you can stay as long as you like.
Please read my profile and let us know why you are passionate about animals! Looking forward to hearing from you.

This is a great oppurtunity to learn something new! Here you can learn about rescue work, you will also see and experience how people live in Mexico, and practice spanish with the locals as this is not a touristy town and you will be forced to learn spanish as the majority dont speak any english.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR COMPASSIONATE, SELFLESS PEOPLE WITH THESE QUALITIES:
1. Animal lovers (that love BOTH cats & dogs)
2. PASSIONATE & GENUINE (We prefer volunteers whose passion is to help animals, someone that will pour their souls in helping the lost souls of Mexico. People that want to make a difference in their lives & not just looking for a place to crash!)
(PLEASE NOTE THAT MAKING CHANGES TAKES TIME, DON'T EXPECT TO COME FOR A WEEK OR TWO & THINK YOU HAVE THE ANSWERS TO EVERYTHING & TOTALLY DISREGARD THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE OVER TIME!!!) Remember, you cannot cover the sun with one finger! If you want to make changes, give some of your time & STAY LONGER!
3. Highly organized - From experience, the best volunteers have been the most organized and are able to communicate very well.
4. CLEAN & NEAT (We expect everyone to be considerate & keep their space clean, as well as perform their duties the way they were taught, selflessly, with a full heart. THERE IS A 3 DAY PROBATION.)
5. Team player (People that can get along with roommates, do your part in keeping your home well kept & performing the duties well. NO DRAMA PLEASE!!!) We may need to switch schedules, help in other areas if there is an emergency or someone is ill.
6. Responsible, full of initiative and willing to get down and dirty. This is not an 'easy' workaway. We need people who really love animals and are looking for a rewarding experience. If you fit this profile, we are looking forward to meeting you! (If you're an animal lover, it won't even feel like work.)
**Also if you are free and it works out that you’d love a free trip to Canada, we are always looking for flight escorts to accompany our animals that have been adopted in Canada to go from Mexico to Vancouver.
We accept close friends and couples, however, you must be aware that your schedule & days off may be different because we need to have coverage.
If you have additional skills such as being handy and fixing stuff, gardening, computer skills, updating social media, etc. to help us put animals up for adoption, that’s great. We are very flexible & open to any ideas & opinions that can help better the lives of our rescues.

Also dogs are given baths on Sundays & both floors (front & back) are completely washed on Sundays as well.
VILLAGE DOG ROUTINE:
This is for people that want to live in a quieter place. It’s 10-15 minutes from the city by taxi/bus in a small village. There are avocado trees, lime trees and soursop trees in the backyard. There are pools you can use (must buy something or pay 50 pesos - $2.50), there is a beach to swim and hang out (but it’s not the caribbean, it's a bay), a place to rent kayaks and take them on the water, lots of little rustic restaurants, a new night club bar and restaurant with a pool. There is no wifi at this house, but you can find OK wifi at some restaurants in the village. We recently rescued these dogs from a hoarding hell. They are thriving and need lots of love!
The routine in the village is very laid back, as the animals all live together except 1 little girl that needs to be separated from the others. It is only manageable to walk the dogs if there are 2 volunteers. I will explain in more detail when you apply.
1. Walk dogs (if 2 volunteers. Skip if not. It is better to walk them in the morning before feeding so it’s not too hot. The walk to the beach takes under an hour round trip. Some of the dogs like to go swimming!)
2. Feed the dogs around 9am
3. Pick up and wash bowls
4. Pick up poop and spot clean poop and pee areas with bleach water in the back and front yard. Scrub spots with the broom and sweep away water so the areas can dry.
5. Axel is a sweet older dog who needs to be bathed once a week. The other dogs can be bathed as you see fit.
For the evening routine, you just need to feed the dogs around 6pm, pick up poop & spot clean, pick up & wash bowls and walk the dogs (if 2 volunteers). Walking after feeding is best because it is cooler out. Cleaning and water replacement is mostly done in the morning but use your discretion.
This position entails helping with either the cats or dogs as described above when there are no volunteers. This person is responsible for managing the Workaway profile daily, doing 'interviews' for interested volunteers and training new volunteers. This extra task requires no more than an hour daily.
We would be happy to provide you with a reference after your time with us so that you can add the experience to your resume. This position requires a 1 month stay.
VETERINARY POSITION: Helping at our Clinic
The need to control the overpopulation of animals in our city is never-ending. We are in dire need of an experienced vet to volunteer on Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 8 a.m to 4 p.m doing spay and neuter of cats & dogs. The vet needs to be able to work with injectable anesthesia as our clinic is a low cost clinic and has to have at least 2 years experience.
SOCIAL MEDIA GURU
We have a website. It’s a plus if you know about how to update a website, social media & photography, as we love to update our followers as to how everyone is doing. We have just started an instagram account and would love help maintaining it. If you have any social media/marketing experience or skills we also need someone to help keep our Instagram and Facebook pages up to date. We need to keep spreading the word about our mission in order to raise awareness, funds and love for the fur babies!

Chetumal is a small bay city with practically no tourists and lots to do nearby. Although a coastal town, there is no beach in Chetumal but there is a lovely boulevard to walk along the water with restaurants and shops, this is a 10 minute ride from the house. Across the street, there is the Plaza Las Americanas with a Mcdonalds, Supermarket, TelCel, Movie Theatre, Natural Food store, clothing shops, a department store, a food court and more. The community that the house is in is very friendly and quiet. The ADO bus station and a laundry places are less than a 10 minute walk away. There are also a few small family-run restaruant 3 blocks from the house.
For those who want swim/explore nearby towns, we are a 15 minute ride to Laguna Millagros, a 25 minute ride to Bacalar, 15 minute ride to Calderitas which has a small beach and an 1 hour ride to ruins at Xpujil.
