  • Description

    Hi, I'm Richard.
I am a retired engineer restoring a large classic yacht. The yacht is in a large engineering workshop with all facilities required for its refurbishment. You will be working with me on tasks such as sanding painting and varnishing. Replacement of wooden parts, fibreglass and stainless steel parts is required, some of which will be manufactured. Electrical wiring will be required. I can teach you the necessary skills which you can learn or enhance them if you have them already. Safety briefings will be given. Safety clothing will be provided. I can provide a reference at the end of your stay if required for your college or university or employer. You will be a member of the --- Yacht association, a not for profit association aiming to restore the yacht and teach skills in boat restoration and engineering.

Please plan to stay 4 weeks minimum please.

Please note that this is similar to a professional work placement. If you wish to go away to visit other places for a long weekend - example - friday to monday - that's fine, just let me know. Other workaways have visited Scotland / Liverpool / London / York / etc etc.

Please check my calendar on this web site for vacancies.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Learn practical skills associated with boat restoration. I can teach you woodworking techniques, fibreglass techniques and metal working skills or engines. Electrical skills can be introduced.
    Also improve your English.
Go cycling - I can lend you a bicycle.
It is easy to visit other cities in England or Scotland via the railway from Whitehaven.
I can provide a work reference if you wish at the end of your stay.

  • Help

Help is required from a practical person, preferable from an engineering background familiar with the use of hand tools perhaps an engineering student. The ability to climb ladders is required and to be reasonably fit. The ability to paint varnish and sand and perhaps use wood/fibreglass/metal. I will teach you any skills required if you do not have them, and you can practice TIG welding if you wish. Monday to Friday nominally. The ability to speak some English is needed. I have had twelve or more helpers all which enjoyed their experience and learnt a lot. All are welcome back.
