    Description

We are couple Sonia (45) and Zuzana (39), originally from Czech Republic. After 14 years living in UK we have moved to Portugal almost a year ago (May 2018) to pursue our dream of living simpler life in nature, growing our own food, keeping animals and be as self sufficient as possible.
We chose Central Portugal, specifically the foothills of Serra da Estrela, Portuguese mountain range with the highest peak Torre. Our aim is to look after the land as best as we can, learn new things, make new friends and enjoy every day to the fullest. We fell in love with small village surrounded by Roman roads, massive boulders and incredibly friendly locals, as well as remnants of medieval castle and paragliders flying above our heads when the thermals are right.
Sonia, artist with wide range of interests in crafts, loves gardening, growing and preserving food, photography and intuitive painting. Baking is another passion. Zuzana, on the other hand, loves creating furniture from found pieces of wood, cares for animals and is an incredible cook, too. You can learn wet or needle felting, free motion machine embroidery, even painting, because we believe everyone can paint. Also sewing your own clothes, repurposing existing materials and cloths, as well as making wearable art. Zuzana can show you how to unleash your creativity and see extraordinary potential in ordinary things.
Our quinta of 3ha is located just a short walk from the village where you can find a couple of cafes, a couple of restaurants and a souvenir shop. Bread van is visiting several times a day as well as fish and meat van. Although the farm has been looked after really well by pre pious owners, the accommodation is something that needs attention, hence we're renting another farm in the meantime. Quinta dos Sonhos has around 200 olive trees, sweet chestnuts, various fruit trees including lemons, cherries, apples, plums, pears and figs, small vineyard and pasture for animals. At the moment we have 11 chickens, 3 sheep, one cat, 3 dogs and 15 bee hives.
This summer/autumn we are looking for volunteers who are able to help us with various projects such as clearing waterways and setting up irrigation, establishing/maintaining vegetable patches including food forest, helping with infrastructure, rebuilding the house, building base for our beautiful yurt, creating compost toilet/outdoor shower and many more. Experience with carpentry, building and permaculture would be a great advantage; as long as you don't shy away from physical work, sweat and dirt.
We eat mainly vegetarian food with occasional fish/meat dish. During spring and autumn (March, April, May, October, November and December) food is provided and you can join us for lunch. However, you will supply your own alcohol and coffee/tea. You will cook breakfast and dinner yourselves in a caravan which serves as your accommodation as well. Please note that in summer (June, July, August and September) we don't provide food due to less working hours, however you can purchase fresh produce, eggs and bread directly from us. Please note we do not accept drug users or excessive drinkers. If you smoke (cigarettes), it is absolutely forbidden, especially during the summer or any dry period, to throw cigarette butts on the ground. Every single cigarette must be properly extinguished to avoid fires.
We tend to start our working day around 8am. We have a break for coffee and lunch is usually around 1pm. Depending on weather we then carry on working. You will be expected to work 5 hours a day (spring and autumn) and less during the summer (3 hours) due to high temperatures. Your two days off are preferred to fall on the weekend. There are many activities to enjoy such as walking, trekking, swimming, cycling or bouldering. Summer is great for visiting local festas happening almost every weekend and festivals of all sorts. And if you are a paraglider you will love the location and the weather, too.
We go shopping once a week and you can join us to stock up on essentials. Closest shop with essentials can be found in nearby villages and supermarkets are located about 20 minutes drive.
We are able to provide accommodation for one/a couple in our small but cosy and equipped caravan with gas cooker, double bed and storage. Later we will be adding solar panel to provide electricity for charging phones/laptops and light in the caravan. You will share bathroom with us in the main house. Summer months are also suitable for campers with tents, however, we cannot accept campervans due to restricted access to our current rented property. Once we move to our own farm, campervans will be accepted. Please look out for updates. We can pick you up from train/bus station in Celorico da Beira, our nearest town. There is a direct bus from Porto.

Our farm is set in a wonderful area close to historical village and with many interesting eco/permaculture projects around. We can share the knowledge we gained regarding life in rural Portugal as well as our experience of living in UK for many years. You can also try and have a go at some art and craft projects including natural building, felting, sewing and intuitive painting.
There are festas happening every weekend during the summer where you can enjoy local food and drink, music and atmosphere. On your days off there are many places nearby worth a visit with rich history and raw beauty.

Olive picking is another area where help would be required, usually in December.
