I'm Duy, the head of a 20 employee strong food supply company in one of Vietnam's most dynamic and exciting places, Ho Chi Minh City. As a result of recent business successes here I really want to give back to my country and its people.
For the last 5 years I've dedicated my life to building a successful business. I love to travel, I love to experience new things and l love to learn. However, as many businesspeople will tell you, it can take over your life and as such I miss the opportunity to meet new people and learn from others. After talking with my friend Nick - who has been building his own business in Da Lat with the help of workaway - and his volunteers, I saw a fantastic opportunity to have a genuine cultural and social exchange with travellers and like minded people from around the world. I don't ask for much from those who chose to stay with me, except a kind heart and an open mind.
We have 1 project which I will be running:
1) English language classes for local poor children in HCMC.
- You may not know this, but here in Vietnam education isn't always free, and often the poorest get left behind.
- We really want to help those who have less opportunities in life and so we are setting up a free English class. I have a degree in English but what the students really need is to interact with people from different cultures and countries to broaden their ideas and (of course!) practice their English with REAL LIFE FOREIGNERS!!!
The first part of this project will involve redecorating and preparing the room for teaching in. Its not complicated work, but some experience in DIY would be helpful.
In addition to helping with English, I can always use help with my business too. We drive around the city meeting our customers every day and our staff could use some help with this. Its a great opportunity to see the city from a different perspective, meet lots of different people and get a truly immersive experience of HCMC life.
In HCMC Workawayers will be staying in a shared room (max 4 people) at my house in District 7. We have a housemaid who can cook and clean, but of course you can also use the kitchen.

Given that I am Vietnamese, I (and my staff) will be able to introduce you to many aspects of life here in Vietnam. Great local food and drink, trips around the city, coffee and much more.
You only need to help 2 to 4 hours in the morning in exchange for your accommodation and food. We have breakfast, and lunch together then, if you are free to do as you wish in the afternoon and at night.
We have employee who can drive you around the city and show you some popular tourist destinations.
For the most part, we need help from people to speak English with children - to be clear, I don't receive any financial gain from these classes, its something that I would like to do to help my community. Don't worry if you haven't got any experience in teaching, most of these kids just need to interact with foreigners to build their confidence - songs, games and activities can make learning fun!
However, if you are not so interested in teaching, or you'd like a change I can always use help with my business. We distribute fresh products to customers across the city from hotels to super markets - our sales team often meets with international clients as well as taking out deliveries and such. Although it might not sound like a glamorous job, you would really get the opportunity to see HCMC (and indeed aspects of Vietnamese culture) from a completely different perspective. You'll get to drive all around the city, meet different people and businesses and see food and drinks from my country in a unique way.
Many of the workawayers I have met simply have a desire to do or experience something different and get the opportunity to live in another place for a while. Im offering the chance to do just that in exchange for your time helping kids to learn or to help make my business more fruitful (excuse the pun).
In HCMC there is a 4 person shared room which you will stay in with any other workaways that are staying. It has an air conditioner, dorm bed, locker, fan, wifi, and desktops computers are always available for you to use.
There are maids who are responsible for your dirty clothes and cooking your food, as we are food company, there is always fresh, clean food available for you!
Our maid will make you your breakfast and lunch every day. We normally don't have dinner but you can make your own dinner if you would like: eggs, vegetables and chicken are always available in the refrigerator, or eat out at one of HCMC many cheap and delicious restaurants.
My employees will drive you around the city if you would like to explore, so just make sure to schedule with the company so we can arrange the time for you.
It takes 20 minutes from our company to go to District 1 by motorbike.
25 minute from our company to go to the airport
10 Minute to go to District 7 -Phu My Hung - Korean Town.
You could travel around the city in the time off. My company is located near the bus station. From my place, you can travel to the west, and south of Vietnam. Plus if you want to go to Dalat city- we have truck and employees who go to the transportation point every morning so they could drive you there for free (when you get to my place, you will understand the location is very easy to go any where from there). We have employee willing to book cheap tickets for you if you travel to the north Vietnam by plane or by bus.
