    ====================
    Hello!
    We are an energetic couple, Sandy and David, with two grown children who are either traveling the world or at home with us. We enjoy meeting new people, learning about their travel adventures, and helping them discover many of the wonderful things about our area. When our children were in high school, we were very involved with AFS and hosted students from Italy, Germany, France, and Senegal. We learned so much from these students and feel we were able to bring positive experiences to them as well.

    Sandy has worked as both a guidance counselor and an English teacher and is happy to help you improve your verbal and written English skills. David has worked as a science teacher in his home country of England and in the United States. He enjoys building things and can be easily convinced to give demos of his science magic.

    We currently have two rescue cats that David brought back from Kyrgystan. (Yes, there's a story there..) Despite living on the streets for most of their young lives, they are very gentle and sweet and love to be cuddled.

    Currently we reside in a semi-rural location in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, about an hour outside of both New York City and Philadelphia. We have 12 acres of property, mostly wooded with some trails running through them. In the late winter we tap our maple trees for syrup, and in the spring and summer we tend our small vegetable garden, work on our flower gardens, and enjoy our pool. Our land is designated as part of the Forestry Stewardship Program, a program designed to encourage management of private forestland for non-commodity benefits, such as wildlife, recreation, aesthetics and water quality as well as traditional commodities like timber and wood products. If you enjoy the outdoors and are interested in forest management, wood splitting, trail maintenance and possible painting, please contact us. In the heading of your message, please include the numbers 437 so we know that you read our profile. We are looking for enthusiastic and easy-going volunteers who are ready to put in a solid and rewarding day's work.

    We have had some amazing volunteers in the past and have throroughly enojoyed hosting. Hopefully by reading our reviews you will get a better sense of who we are and what we have to offer. Feel free to message us with any questions you may have. We look forward to hearing from you. Sandy and David

    Currently we reside in a semi-rural location in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, about an hour outside of both New York City and Philadelphia. It is a peaceful area and perfect for someone who enjoys the outdoors and wants to develop some practical skills. We are in a small village (no shops--just a church and a tavern) with friendly neighbors who have enjoyed getting to know our volunteers over the years. We have easy access to New York City via public transportation. Philadelphia takes longer to get to on public transportation due to connections, but it is definitely do-able.

    Help

    We are looking for volunteers to help us with our many ongoing projects around the house. While our focus right now is on forest management, additional volunteer opportunities may include painting, gardening, general yard tasks, indoor cleaning. This spring our focus will be on clean-up in our gardens and trail/forest maintenance.

    Ideal volunteers will be self-motivated, non-smokers, and respectful of our home and property.

    Accommodation

    Volunteers have the option of staying in a variety of accommodations, depending on your personal tastes and what is available at the time. In the main house, we offer a spacious, private double room with lots of natural light, decorated with antiques. In addition to the private bedroom, there is also a finished walk-out basement, complete with patio, that has a private bathroom and living space. There is a queen-sized bed and if you are traveling with a companion, with a little help, we can bring a single bed to the area as well. If necessary, there is also a very comfortable couch there that can be used as a bed.

    For the volunteer who is looking for a more rustic experience, we offer two different options. None of these options has bathroom facilities and volunteers would need to use the bathrooms in the house. First, there is our guest cottage, a private space on the second floor of our small barn, complete with double bed and sitting area, that looks out into the woods. It is a lovely location, great for writing your novel, working on your art, or private reflection and meditation. If you are traveling with someone, we can easily provide another sleeping area in the guest cottage, whether it be an air mattress or the couch that is already there. Finally, we have tents that can be set up either by the pool or at our camp spot in our woods. We are happy to provide air mattresses, sheets, blankets and pillows for you. If it rains, we can always find room for you in the house!

    You are welcome to join us for meals while you are here, and the kitchen and barbecue grill are also available for your use at mutually convenient times.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

    We live near the picturesque town of Clinton, NJ which houses boutique shops, locally-owned restaurants, art galleries, and the river and reservoir where you can kayak. Clinton offers bus transportation to Port Authority, New York and Newark Airport on the TransBridge bus line, and Annandale, a couple miles from Clinton, offers train service to Penn Station, New York. We will also try to help with transportation when available. When possible, we can try and provide transportation to Newark Airport upon your arrival and departure if you arrive by air. Sometimes volunteers find a less expensive flight to JFK Airport or Laguardia, but they are not easily accessible to us and you would have to get public transportation via New York City to the Clinton area. When you add the round trip fares to the cost of a plane ticket, you may find the Newark Airport option is actually more affordable, and it will definitely be easier for you.

    We own kayaks and bicycles that volunteers are welcome to use. Both a lake and a river are within a 10-15 minute drive and our country roads and bike trails invite long bicycle rides. There are parks in the area and plenty of gentle hiking trails nearby, and we are located on twelve acres of property which include our own trails. Hot air ballooning is a popular activity in the area and can be pre-arranged. It is, of course, always contingent on the weather and is, unfortunately, expensive. It is something you would probably need to save for in advance. It is an amazing experience though. Whereas we are in an area that is rather secluded, surprisingly there is a local restaurant/tavern within a 10-15 minute walk from the house. We also have a pool that you are welcome to use in season. You will often find neighbors stopping in for breakfast or a chat, and you are welcome to join us in these conversations.

    If you arrive with your own car, we have plenty of parking space available.
