  • Description

    Description

This is a small family owned castle hotel approx. 120km away from Vienna. We offer you the opportunity to stay at a castle with more than 1000 years of history in exchange for some help in the kitchen and service. Depending on your interests you could also help out in the garden or with repairs in and around the castle. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside and located in a small village that also boasts a natural swimming pool for hot days (20min by foot). The hotel is run by two siblings (Anna 35 and Erasmus 33) who have taken over the business from their parents a few years ago. Our parents live next door and they have two very cute dogs. All of us like to travel and we speak a few languages on different levels. Most of our guests are from Austria and Germany, but normally we also have about 20% of international clients.
If you love spending your time in nature you will definitely enjoy your time here. If you like to visit Vienna or Graz you could easily go there since both cities are 1h20min by car away from Bernstein.

It would be great to get some help during the evening service. We usually serve small meals for our guests. Dinnertime is at 7pm and we need someone to help with preparations and clean-up. Depending on your language skills and interests we would decide where best to place you (e.g. service and laying the tables, or helping in the kitchen). If you do have experience in tourism that would be great, but it is not necessary. Our busiest months are July and August, so it would be great if you could commit to a stay of at least those 2 months.
The garden work (if you would like to do some) is not difficult either. There is always someone there to answer questions and it is mainly getting rid of weeds (we will tell you what is what) and bushes etc. The garden was planned during the beginning of the 19th century. We don´t use any pesticides etc. and keeping a healthy and sustainable environment for insects and all other animals is very important to us.
We are quite flexible with working hours, but 4 days a week during the evening for a few hours are needed. Please be aware that our busiest days are weekends, so that ist the time you are needed most.

In addition there is a team breakfast every day at 10 a.m. that you would be more than welcome to join. What else ...

If you are a nature lover Bernstein is probably the place for you. The village has a natural swimming pool and is surrounded by forests. You can go hiking or riding a bike etc. If you want to visit nearby cities Graz and Vienna are easy to go to - public buses go there every day, but it takes a bit longer than driving yourself. The distance to both cities is approx. 120km.

Be warned our wifi is quite slow. We have very thick walls, so the signal is not working very well most of the time. We also have to turn off the modem etc. during thunderstorms, because otherwise it could get broken if lightning hits. The only way it works decently is if you can create a hotspot with your mobile phone. There are quite cheap possibilities to do so - e.g. you could get an Austrian simcard and add the download package - e.g. 20gb per month. This costs about 15€ per month and this is what I do myself.

  • Space for parking camper vans

    Space for parking camper vans

We have a lot of space so, if you come with your own car/campervan there is enough space to park it. There is always free parking available inside the castle gates for a private car. For the campervan it depends how big it is, weather we have space for it outside or inside the castle perimeters, but we will find a spot for it in any case.
