Our Club House is in Nozawaonsen; the most unique traditional ski village in all of Japan. The House is a private, members only ski club with two western style apartments. We have begun work on our third apartment and are currently looking for help with building. We are seeking a couple to help with building, organizing, recycling, cleaning and moving materials. Singles traveling together may be considered though we prefer couples. We cannot accommodate short stays so be prepared to stay for at least a month. All that being said, if you have significant construction skills we will consider shorter stays of 2 to 3 weeks.
If you have experience with carpentry, drywall installation and finishing, electricity, plumbing, masonry, metal work, wood finishing or painting then you will be given priority. We expect to work throughout next ski season and into the Spring.
Help in the house
Nozawaonsen is in the ski country near Nagano but you don't have to be a skier to enjoy the surroundings. The village has been continuously inhabited for over a thousand years and the traditional village lifestyle is much more authentically Japanese than you are likely to encounter in a big city. The weather becomes hotter in the summer but even then the nights are cool and the sound of water running off the mountain is audible everywhere. Hikers, bikers and walkers will particularly enjoy the Spring and Summer when the blossoming trees and flowers and fresh mountain air of the village. Japanese "Onsen" culture is integral to village life and there are 13 free-to-the-public onsen scattered through the village; one directly across the street from our building.
Construction skills are necessary. We expect no more than 4 or 5 hours of help per day but if you want to work three full days and then take four full days off every week we can accommodate your desires. We are extremely flexible with the schedule and having all of your off time in a single block or spacing it out is really up to you. Almost all of our help required right now involves construction. You should have a willingness to use a vacuum cleaner and being proactive with organizing and recycling (a big deal in Japan) is an absolute necessity. We need help from now until next Spring.

Bedrooms are western furnished with private toilet and sink and with a shared shower. There is a fully stocked western style kitchen available for your use; groceries are provided so you can cook for yourself and others staying in the house. Occasional restaurant meals are part of the package and there are many excellent food choices available throughout the village; even a great Italian restaurant for a change of pace from Japanese food.
If you want to take your off-time in a block you can get to just about everywhere in Japan during a four day period. Nearby is the town of Iiyama where you can board the Shinkansen fast train to Nagano in 12 minutes; from there to Tokyo in around 2 hours, Nagoya in about 3 and Osaka in about 4 hours. There are countless small towns and villages in area that can be accessed via local buses. If this is your first time in Japan you may never want to leave the village at all since there are so many interesting and lovely things to experience within walking distance of our house. In the non-skiing months mountain bikes can be rented, taken up the mountain by gondola and ridden down dedicated trails or just leisurely ridden down the roads back to the village.
